    10/29/2009 Amanda A. says:

Before I go to bed I drink a glass of water and take some B-vitamins, when I wake up I take more B vitamins, have gatorade or coconut water for electrolytes. I swear by it. Never get hangovers now.

Oh and a greasy breakfast never hurts.

A big bowl of soup spiked with chile sauce, preferably before you go to bed. Then lots of water and an aspirin when you wake up.
My friend swears by eating a spoonful of chile paste before bed to ward off hangovers.

  1. 10/29/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

Drink two glasses of water back to back before blacking out.

Then in the morning, Gatorade + a greasy meal (depending how bad it is), a J and then back to bed.

  2. 10/29/2009 Vivek "When I wake up imma be yelping" S. says:

There's very little I can do before bed to prevent hangovers.  But my cure is foolproof: I run five miles.

  3. 10/29/2009 Man About Town X. says:

@ amanda and kat: agreed. My variation on that is one litre of room temp water for every four drinks. (and I usually don't get beyond four drinks anyway.)

An easier way to do it is to simply incorporate water as you drink. Have one big glass of water before you head out, another with your first drink, and then one or two as the evening hums along. It's really easy to get into the habit.

  4. 10/29/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

A major pet peeve of mine is when I'm spotted drinking water throughout the night and people bust my nuts about it. "Oooh, WATER?? Let me get you another drink, you bailer!" to which I usually reply "Guess who's NOT going to be hurling into a toilet and wanting to blow their brains out tomorrow morning, bitch??"

For people who just drink water, adding electrolytes will make it easier for your body to absorb the water.

Banana + lemon juice + water = cheap Gatorade

  6. 11/19/2009 Kat "don't get me started!" F. says:

How could I have forgotten to mention the Teany Sandwich?? I had one this morning for the first time in a while!

    toast
    apple butter
    almond butter
    sliced bananas
    drizzle of maple syrup

    ...then grill it!

11/20/2009 John "underpaid civil servant" F. says:

@Min Min - dandelions are diuretic, so there might be something to that.  Diuretics lower blood pressure by speeding up the kidneys, and the lower pressure might help with hangover symptoms.

I used to go with the great pink Pepto. 1 swig before i went out, 1 before bed and 2 on the drive into work the next day. Now I usually go with Gatorade and a a greasy breakfast but there's only one that works for sure, just keep drinking.

11/20/2009 Neil "indefinite review hiatus" T. says:

    It is all about prevention!

For those who have an alcohol intolerance (like me) -- listen up!  I've been told by two doctors to take a chewable Pepcid about 30 minutes before drinking.  I test this theory on my birthday last weekend.  Normally it's 2-3 drinks and I am done, sometimes so flushed and sick I feel like I need to barf.

Anyway, I had 7 drinks that night, never got my Asian blush, never felt sick, wasn't really all that drunk, and woke up like a champ the next morning and played basketball for two hours.  True story.

Water, water and more water. Unless you drank like a sailor, the ill effects the next morning are mostly due to dehydration.
