I'm going camping with my SO, some friends and some siblings this weekend. Will need to feed ourselves for 4 days.

Will be bringing some fish to grill on night #1, veggie dogs, flank steak, KD and some farmers market veggies from our stop along the way, but looking for something fun and new that doesn't take too much "bringing things," preparation or refrigeration.

Anyone have those camping go-to meals they are willing to share? I need some inspiration.

  1. 9/2/2010 Chris "How quickly can I hit 4 digits?" P. says:

    Pork and beans.

Open can. Put can on fire. Eat.

  2. 9/2/2010 Roma M. says:

Eggs for sure. They're easy and can be very delicious. I ate enough cholesterol to make Letterman's quintuple bypass look like a walk in the park.

Instant Oatmeal - you can actually find recipes online to make your own flavours and amounts to bring!
Ramen.. but then again I eat that even when I'm not camping. LOL

Oatmeal. If you bring a pot, it's easy to cook. Anything instant wher eyou can boil water and add ilke Noodles or Kraft dinner.
Also cereal and almond milk (bc it won't go sour without a fridge)
    and hummus
after the 3rd r 4th day ur freezer will start melting so eat all ur meats first.

Sunflower seeds and nuts to munch on.

Marshmellows, graham crackers and nutella (easier than melting chocolate) for smores
    Stove top pop corn
Foil + yams and or corn

RAMEN! thats a great idea. And yes, some eggs too.

Hmm keep em coming people these are better idea than I had.

Car camping or back country camping. If you're going into the back country weight is an issue, otherwise not so much. Also depends on whether you're cooking over a fire or a camp stove.

I second the eggs suggestion. They keep quite well unrefrigerated. I usually do huevos rancheros where I fry some eggs and put them on tortillas with salsa and cheese. We also do oatmeal for breakfast.

Pita with hummus or peanut butter is really good for lunch. Pita, like tortilla, is really good for camping 'cause it doesn't get crushed.

My go-to camp meal is campfire or camp stove pizza. You make the crust out of bannock (http://www.survivaltop...). Bannock is also great on it's own, especially when wrapped around a stick and grilled marshmallow style. You can premix all the dry ingredients in a bag and just add water. Here's a video I found of camp stove pizza: http://www.youtube.com....

For smores, even easier that the nutella idea is to just get those cookies that are half chocolate half cookie. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/...

  5. 9/2/2010 Jennifer "associasian" M. says:

oops. Car, but without stove (unless, of course one of our friends etc brings one) we usually just use fire. Takes longer but.. its part of the experience.

good call on the half chocolate cookies

but nutella doesn't need regerating and you can use it for breakfast!!

I also had a system which i divided all the food into bags for different meals so things are easy to find.
A good store to go is BULK BARN

The pizza works equally well on a fire and it's really excellent. Another must if you're using a fire is corn -- soak it in water for a while and then throw it right in the embers with husk on for a few minutes -- and potatoes chopped and wrapped in foil with butter, onions, salt, and peppers and thrown in the embers for a long time.

@Laura: Nutella also tastes better. I prefer digestives to graham crackers though. The real benifit to the cookies is that it's simple and you have no mess at all.

@matthew I like the water on corn idea. I like to butter and salt it all , and foil it and throw it in.

The water  (or beer) soak pre-marshmellow roast works really well too. Crispy outside, gooey outside . no fires.

    Canned mushrooms!! Mmm...

Coffee. Campfire coffee sooo good. Also suggest a satellite phone and solar charger. Why? Cause every horror movie set in the woods the campers die cause they can't call for help.

@Eliah: You need this: http://www.findmespot.... Perfect for the safety obsessed outdoorsman. They are car camping though, which likely means a higher density of people than most areas in Toronto.

Not exactly a food product per say, but cans of 'Pringles' travel well & are great with the beer you're going to have eventually.
