Going to be in Hamilton/Burlington, what is there to do here, other than debate where a stadium should go?

  1. 9/2/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

Hamilton has a museum of flight. Never been there but. If you're in Hamilton may as well get out to Niagara or Niagara on the lake if you have a car.

  2. 9/2/2010 Elaine "Danger Zone" K. says:

    Sadness.

  3. 9/2/2010 Chris "How quickly can I hit 4 digits?" P. says:

There is nothing there. It is a barren wasteland. Don't waste your time.

The Royal Botancial Garden is an amazing place and well worth a full day's time. It has the largest botanical centre in Canada and ranks highly in terms of international research (one of my favourite profs work here). It is worth the trek out; even visiting at different times of years . You don't have to be a gardener to enjoy this place (but it helps if you are a docent with money and connections pouring out of your ears)

As well, there are a number of waterfalls here that are absolutely stunning (even more so in the winter when it's entirely frozen over). It's been on my to-do list for the last 2 years and I'm hoping to before the end of this year (possible UYE?)

As for restaurants, I can't say much. Most of the city of Hamilton is closed on Sundays and the one time I tried to go to a Chinese restaurant, it was on fire so I had to go to the Keg next door.

  4. 9/2/2010 Karl "Kid Don Cornelius" R. says:

    I'll second the gardens.

If you're looking for some food, it's all about the pork in Burlington:

    - Ribfest this weekend (read: pork, beer and music). Canadian blues man Jack DeKeyzer is headlining Sat night. My only beef (ha) with with Ribfest is the masses of people. If you're going to go, get there early to chow down and then plant yourself in the beer garden.

    - Arguably one of the best BBQ joints in Ontario: Sweet Smoke on the border of Burlington and Oakville. It's the real deal.

I second Min Min's Botanical Gardens recommendation; they keep it in tip-top shape and, if you're going out that way, it's only a hop and skip into the valley to walk downtown Dundas or hit the conservation area.

  6. 9/3/2010 Melanie C. says:

Do you golf?  There are some nice courses out that way.  Not sure which ones are private vs. public.

There are a couple of nice art galleries in Hamilton. The AGH is close to downtown, across the street from Jackson Square, and had a bunch of upgrades a few years back. Also, there's supposed to be a nice one on campus at McMaster University. I must confess, in all my years attending McMaster I never visited either (Engineering student, what'd you expect?)

Speaking of McMaster: this weekend is residence move-in, so it's either worth avoiding, or worth poking around to see what kind of concerts and shenanigans go down. I'm not sure how much campus security appreciates non-students / non-family at this point, though. If you do go by, though, and you're interested in such things, see if you can arrange a tour of the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. You probably need a group of people for that, though - but it's an AWESOME tour.

The RBG is quite nice, which has nothing to do with the fact that I share initials with it. I'm told there are some decent trails through Cootes Paradise, and I think a few that take you up the "mountain" (what the locals call the Niagara Escarpment).

If you're in Burlington, there's a cheap-cheap movie theatre called Encore Cinemas - second-run movies but the tickets are something like $5, less on Tuesdays.

Downtown Dundas, located about a three minute drive from McMaster University (noticing a theme yet? :) ) is quite nice and good to walk around and check out some local shops.

If indoor shopping is your thing, Mapleview Mall in Burlington is a slightly better choice than Burlington Mall, and Fairview Mall hardly exists anymore other than as the other half of a massive Fortino's, and should be avoided unless you're shopping for groceries. In Hamilton, avoid Centre Mall and Jackson Square entirely, and concentrate on Limeridge. There's another mall whose name I forget, but is located close to the steel plants. AVOID.

Other things I can't believe I forgot about Hamilton:
    -Dundurn Castle
-Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (near the airport)
    -Canadian Football Hall of Fame
-Copps Coliseum might have a show or two
    -Gage Park
-The HMCS Haida, apparently Canada's most famous warship
-African Lion Safari. Don't take your own car, or one that you particularly care about.

    More here: http://en.wikipedia.or...

One final thought (for now): if you're in Burlington, the weekend GO train service to Niagara Falls leaves from Aldershot station, I believe.

I almost forgot: the Hamilton GO station is *beautiful* on the inside, and I think there's a small museum on the second floor. I'm not sure what decade it's from, but it certainly harkens back to a classier time in rail travel.

My last for the evening: apparently Centre Mall and Ottawa Street have seen some substantial improvements in the past few years, and might be worth a look / stroll now. Don't know about that for sure - but I *do* know that Ottawa Street is where you'll find Tim Horton's #1.

Lots of waterfalls - Spencer's Falls is lovely
Dundurn Castle - nice tour and don't skip the heirloom garden
    Royal Botanical Garden

I kind of like Hamilton - too bad it is so economically depressed.

BTW, on the website, it says on the website you can save 20% admission off Dundurn Castle if you purchase your tickets online.
