I'm from NYC but I fell in love with Montreal years ago. The people are polite and friendly. Try riding the bikes - BIXI - they have stations all around the city. Rent at any station; return to any other station. Accepts credit cards. Just watch the rates though. I swear, I stood at one of the bike stations reading the instructions, and by gosh, I still managed to get it wrong. I think it's $5 for first half hour, then the rates inflate. But I think a rental is good for 24 hours. You can check out the yelp reviews and their site. One of the primary (and economical) purposes is getting from one part of town to another, not primarily geared, though I use it for tourist purposes. The city is very bike-friendly. There are quite a few hills so you'll want to pack a comfy pair of walking shoes or sneakers. Old Port and Old Montreal are must-see. Saint Catherine is the main strip which runs east-west through the city. Crescent, St. Laurent and St. Denis are busy north-south streets that run perpendicular to St. Catherine. You'll find lots of bars, clubs, restaurants here. For what to eat, my yelp buddy, Mathieu recently reviewed Kazu. I must say - I almost salivated as I was reading the reviews. By linking to the Kazu reviews, you can find his link, and probably other Montreal friends as well. Au Pied de Cochon is almost a must-eat based on reviews. Resto La Banquise is one of the better noted restos for poutine (they have at least 20-25 different types) and is open 24 hours. There's so much more. Couldn't hurt to check out Chowhound either. Good luck guys, and I hope you have as much fun on Montreal as I do! Bonne journee!
