I'm hardly new to the city really - all my family lives in Nova Scotia basically, and I'm sort of the prodigal son moving home (although, by long and curious twists, I've never actually lived in NS for more than a few months at a time).  I'm working in Clayton Park starting in January, though I'll have a killer commute (rent in Halifax - or live for free at my folks' place near Truro and commute - I'll take option B, please.) I'm looking to find lots of things to see and do that don't necessarily involve winding up at Pizza Corner at 3am. I've been there, done that, and I have a few pub crawl T-shirts too.

So tell me, what's a young professional got to see and do to try not to look like a Come From Away...?

There's always the live shows, ie. theatre companies and other small venues. And if you're planning on being a local, make sure you go here at least once, the farmer's market in all it's glory: http://halifaxfarmersm...
As far as popular activities.. clubbing? These people like to get their drink on. Also yoga.

Depending on your age group you could check out some live bands at Gus' pub or go to see Picnic face comedy sketch group when they play at Ginger's. I'm not sure if they are still doing the Way Fazed night at the Paragon(the Marquee) but I think that was tuesday. The Rebecca Cohn at Dal has some shows worth checking out. Desiree mentioned the farmer's market, it's probably the best event in the city and runs all year round. If I were you, I would rent in Halifax. There's no point wasting your youth out in the sticks. That's a brutal commute considering the winter weather out there.

Farmer's markets are always good things - always something new to discover.  Thanks for culture spot tips too - We decided not to spend money renting in the city yet - I own a condo in the suburbs of Toronto that I can't get rid of right now (market sucks!) so we're trying to get a tenant there and then buy or build a place once I get busy with work and making money (I've jumped for making a decent salary to a commission-based job - which while it should pay well once it gets running, has me a little nervous about taking on too many expenses).  I'll take a look into some of the other suggestions too - much appreciated!!!
