Hey Halifax! I'm a Toronto yelper visiting your lovely city for a few days in July and I have a question. I've been reading up on the two hostels in Halifax. What I'm reading online makes it sound like Halifax Backpackers (the hostel attached to Alteregos cafe) is in a super bad neighbourhood in which a gal might feel unsafe wandering about. I'm skeptical, having lived in a few neighbourhoods that might be described as sketchy and fully enjoyed the areas.
So my question is this: do you think that a reasonably savvy, not faint of heart solo woman would feel ok staying at this hostel? Based on web reviews and stuff, I'm much more inclined to stay here than at the Hostelling International location (sounds like it has more character and I dig that).
Thanks for the input!
Hi Erin,
I am hoping I am not too late for your trip to Halifax. I own the Halifax Backpackers and we
love the Gottingen street neighbourhood. After reading what you wrote i think you will too. We have never had any of our guests experience problems in the area it just looks a little run down. The northend has so much charachter and is definately worth the visit.
