1/31/2009 Rich "Yelp Is So 2008" U. says:

I'll start: Carl's Jr. and Rubio's Fish Tacos (both Western US chains that I've never seen anywhere east of the Rockies). I also miss Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon (there used to be one on Niagara Falls Blvd next to Swiss Chalet) - not for the country music/line dancing theme, but for the savory Amarillo Cheese Fries and the Spicy Ranch Dipping Sauce.

honestly, i think our restaurants kick any chain's ass any day of the week...but...i would love a sonic or an in-and-out if those count as chains

In-and-Out Burger: Good call!  I forgot about that California chain.  Reminds me of another Western chain: El Pollo Loco.  I've never had Sonic.

  2. 2/1/2009 Jen L. says:

    Hot Dog on a Stick.

  3. 2/1/2009 Jen L. says:

I also like Maggiano's.  But only if I'm feeling like a big fat fatty.  Their serving sizes are ridiculous.  Oh, and I sort of like Chick Fil A and PF Chang's.

2/1/2009 Rich "Yelp Is So 2008" U. says:

Have you tried Pei Wei?  It's a streamlined, less expensive, mix and match cafeteria-style version of Changs (I think they're the same outfit)?  I know they have them in Philly.  I'm embarrassed to say I know not of Maggiano's.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's an Italian place - like Macaroni Grill or Bertucci's?  Because I don't know this place, does that mean my foodie card is revoked?

Anybody want a White Castle?  If only for the novelty?

  4. 2/2/2009 Kelly "CHAMPERS!" S. says:

    mmmmm, White Castle.
    I wouldn't mind a Chipotle or a Cosi.

    b.) Chick-Fil-A

    c.) In-and-Out Burger

d.) What-A-Burger (had it in Texas a few times - liked it better than White Castle ...)

e.) Qdoba (Fresh Mex fast food)

    ** I especially like Chipotle and Chik-Fil-A .....

  6. 2/3/2009 Jen L. says:

Oooh, Bertucci's!  I forgot about Bertucci's.  They have Bertucci's in Boston.  Love it!
Maggiano's is indeed an Italian joint - but more upscale than Olive Garden or one of those other Italian chains.
Rich:  Will have to try Pei Wei - there's one about 6 miles outside the center city area here in Philly.  Field Trip!

While we are at it, though, I'd really like for Buffalo to get a Trader Joe's.  I'm considering moving back home to Buffalo, but WHAT!?  NO THREE BUCK CHUCK?!?  I'd go broke buying wine every week!  :-)

Well, at least it will necessitate a monthly trip to Cleveland (nearest TJ's), but still...

Upscale though it may be, I wish we had a Morton's or Ruth's Chris technically chains).  Has anyone hit the new Hyde Park Steakhouse at Galleria?  On principle, I DON'T want an IKEA or the Swedish food that comes with it (sorry, Eurotrash furniture lovers).

  8. 2/3/2009 Jen L. says:

A Capital Grille might be kind of nice.  I had a bad experience at EB Green's and I don't love the atmosphere at Buffalo Chop House.
I second the Trader Joe's cry.  I bought nearly 200 bucks worth of stuff while in Philly last week and kept it on ice for the 6.5 hour drive home. Would like to avoid that in the future.

I'm not adding anything new here...because I'm not big on "chain restaurants" but here goes:

1.) Not a "chain restaurant"  (durr) but I HAVE to put this here:  *TRADER JOE'S.  TRADER JOE'S  TRADER JOE'S*  Maybe if you say it's name three times, it'll magically appear...???

2.) Chipotle.  (Carnitas and/or chicken burrito bol. I want you.)

3.) Chik-Fil-A.  Delicious and SIMPLE grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato and pickle slices....mmmm.  Don't forget a side of horribly-bad-for-you, crispy, salty waffle fries.  PLEASE COME TO BUFFALO!

    For starters:

    1) In-N-Out Burger

    2) ANY of the COUNTLESS Mexican restaurants from Southern California. The words "carne asada" need to become assimilated into the Buffalonian vocabulary.

Ugh, Chipotle, really?! That place is so overrated. When I finally visited one after everyone's clamoring, it was not worth the 45 minutes' wait and $10 I paid for a mediocre tortilla mostly filled with rice. There are many better "burrito" (and I use that term loosely) places in  the area, and they're locally owned to boot. Support local businesses!
Now, Trader Joe's, that is a campaign I can support. Wegmans does have a good selection of natural/organic stuff, but TJ's is usually cheaper and their store brand stuff is better. Let's get a petition going!

Not all chains are bad.  Even though it's unrealistic (given Buffalo's shrinking population), a McKormick and Schmick's or a Legal Seafoods would be a huge improvement over any of the land-locked, non-chain, local seafood pretenders that offer nothing but previously frozen items.

What is the appeal of Chipotle? Seriously, I've been to a couple of different locations and I just did not understand the cult behind it. It wasn't that bad, but it really did not stand out. Really nothing more spectacular than Moe's or Qdoba, except the price.
I agree, Buffalo really does not really need more chains. Have you been up Niagara Falls Boulevard or Transit Road? It's a veritable wasteland of chains.
But  I stand behind my Trader Joe's suggestion, it's cheaper than Whole Foods and supposedly they treat their employees pretty well too. Buffalo needs more good jobs, not more bland food.

"Trader Joe's suggestion, it's cheaper than Whole Foods "

i'd disagree that it's cheaper than WF.  here at least, they have the same prices on meats but WF's are much higher quality.  as far as produce, TJ's is higher priced.

and as far as chipotle's appeal... their burritos are pretty good...  but i pay attention to them because they're the one fast food retailer in america that is attempting to do sustainable food.  they use organic, free range meats and most of their produce is organic as well.  they're also the same price as Qdoba here at least... so to me it's a no-brainer to go to chipotle over qdoba (which i don't like taste-wise anyway)

  18. 7/15/2009 Brandon "B" V. says:

Dane: you are missing the one big thing that differentiates Trader Joe's from Whole Foods: Three Buck Chuck (called Two Buck Chuck in states with lower taxes).  Tell me where else you can find decent, drinkable wine for that price.

I love Whole Foods for some things, but I think TJ's would fly better in Buffalo.

In-N-Out Burger - that's about it.  Although it isn't really a chain restaurant, Trader Joe's would also be most welcome.  Maybe I'm different, but I haven't really considered what chain restaurants I feel are missing in my life... for me the only thing I'm missing terribly in Buffalo are decent tacos and a truly legit Korean BBQ joint.  I've heard mixed reviews of Korea House and I'm not inclined to drive to the 'burbs to try it.

    7/22/2009 Fox E. says:

I don't do chains. Buffalo NY has the best local places on earth (on par with Chicago, better than NYC), we don't need them. If we were forced to bring in some more chains, then:

    (1) Waffle House
    (2) In-N-Out
    (3) Sonic
    and
    (4) Cook Out from North Carolina.

But rather than bring those 4 in, I'd rather kick all the McDs and BKs and Wendys and DQs and Olive Gardens and Applebees and Chillis and TGIFs and BWW out, and force the local teens and twentysomethings to eat real food - maybe they would then discover that their city has the best local food on the planet, and like everywhere else, those pathetic chains are forcing all the gems out of business, and we're losing the heart and soul of American food - which is not, not now, and never has been, the chain restaurant.

I only rated my faves so far. I've got a lot more to come. Italian Pizza isn't even the same dish as American Pizza, they're like chalk and cheese, and personally I think American Pizza is better (if it's done right). Italian food in both Italy and USA is fantastic, but absolutely different (much like many American versions of other cuisines).

Five Guys is fairly decent too, it's not In N Out or Cook Out but it's not bad. I should also clarify that I only mentioned Sonic for their unexpectedly excellent selection of drinks. Their Banana shake is actually good, and has chunks of real bananas - very unusual for a chain.

And on the Trader Joe's comments, they treat their employees so well you all should be very jealous.  Also, like others have said, TJ's would definitely fly in Buffalo, unlike Whole Foods, which is too similar to Wegmans.  The only difference being, Whole Foods has higher prices.

Trader Joe's had many products that are uniquely theirs and wouldn't take business away from Wegmans and vice versa.

    9/3/2009 Juneko R. says:

It's a conundrum. On the one hand, the last thing Buffalo needs is another chain restaurant. What it really needs is more support for locally owned restaurants. On the other hand, the chain restaurants & stores are often the only way you can get certain things fairly reliably.  Sad to say, but some of the better restaurants & stores in Buffalo are the chains. What can be done about that?

Gawd, I can't tell you how much I longed for a Trader Joe's when I lived in New York. Once, when we visited a friend in Long Island, we loaded up the trunk of our car with as many mostly non-perishables as we could for the long drive back. A High Tech Burrito would probably go well in Buffalo with its unconventional & nontraditional burritos (e.g. Thai style burritos, curry burritos, etc.)

  20. 9/5/2009 Lou S. says:

Trader Joe's is OK for packaged goods, but their meats, produce and breads are pretty awful.  Wegmans does pretty good job at everything.

BTW, I would kill for a Wegmans and a Mighty Taco in San Francisco!
I love those Mission style burritos that I can get on any corner but sometimes I just crave MT, ya know what I mean?

And pizza too. The worst pizza in BUF is still better than the best pizza in SF. I've settled for Little Caeser's because it's the cheapest (other pies start at $15-20 in SF) and they don't overbake or use the wrong "pepperoni" (pizzerias in SF use a salami type of meat...weird) and they don't add strange things like sprouts or avacados (which I like....but not on pizza) and they don't insist on copying NYC style as being the "best" pizza......I hate superthin, flimsy pizza! So I end up paying $6 for a mediocre pizza instead of $20 for a bad one but I'd rather pay $10-15 for a great one from Buffalo!

Don't get me started on wings.......
