One word - BEARS! There are ziplines, and tandem paragliding, (be sure to instruct your paragliding pilot not to land inside the bear habitat, k?) and in the summer, a lumberjack. (I was hoping he would open a beer bottle with a chainsaw - the…More »

The service here is atrocious. 5 stars! ;-) My girlfriend was called a lush, the owner insulted my country (actually, not-my-president, so I just nodded in agreement and helped to heap on the abuse) and after I made a joke, he commented that "oh,…More »

Models totally work here. Not models in the "I'm a freakin' model" Yelp America Princess kind of way, but actual models. Every one of them. I felt like I was in a Robert Palmer video and they were simply irresistible. (can it be permissible? oh…More »
living in North Oakland, just south of Berkeley, where we are incredibly spoiled for great, cheap Indian food, it's very hard for an Indian restaurant elsewhere to earn a 5-star rating from me, but India Gate pulled it off. The restaurant looks…More »
Sophie's could have been anywhere, (Rudy's Can't Fail in Emeryville, anyone) but we wanted a cool local breakfast joint to try out, and we got it in Sophie's. Kitschy decorations all over - there's a Scottish Highlander record on the men's room door…More »

Excellent Manhattan. Great place to people watch, as has been mentioned earlier. We met up with some people in town for the Nike Human Race in a number of major cities over the Labor Day weekend:

a nice place to get your caffeine on down by the water on Pacific. The coffee will get you movin', and the flax rolls just might do the same. ;-) Great way to get your omega-3s, though, especially if you don't eat fish. Hard thing to do in…More »

hip, dark, cave-like little wine bar. I enjoyed my Syrah as we ducked in out of the busy Granville/Robson crowds in the area. I have to get used to the younger drinking age here - I'm not used to seeing so many 18 year olds out in wine bars. Kinda…More »

It's relaxing just to hang out here even if you're not a pothead. And they do have the best munchies . . . the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie was incredible. This place is a hangout to smoke your medicinal marijuana from the club next door,…More »
Oh Southwest, after bad experiences with your competitors I have come to appreciate you all the more. (mostly) on time service, in-flight humor, actual SNACKS, (hear that, USAIR?) you're the heavy favorite when I'm doing budget travel. If there is…More »
Stopped here because we had a couple hours to kill before returning the rental car at SEA and really just wanted to sit outdoors, sip on some drinks, and watch the world go by. We saw no Sanjaya (see other reviews) but JP did sip on some Syrah. I…More »
We left McCain Country (basically, along I-5 from the Canada border until Bellingham, there are McCain signs along the highway. Maybe they're trying to convince Canadians we're total deranged morons and stay the hell away?) and found the first…More »
Very friendly, country feel, (they switched from mainly apple growing a few years ago) and a few good whites and fruit wines grown locally and some Syrah with imported grapes make for a fun time on the way up I-5 to Canada.

The Easy Bay Wintry Coffee List (15)The weather's getting chilly, the leaves are turning, fall is here and people are wearing scarves. Time to get some warm caffeinated goodness. Here are some of the best - I'm sure this list is gonna grow . . . in fact, I can't believe I haven't reviewed Cole in Oakland and Au Coquelet in Berkeley. Insert little under-construction symbol here. Ok, there's a tea bar here too. Call me metro. |
Vegas for the Confident, don't-need-to-flaunt-it Thirtysomething (7)You don't need to get bottle service and light up cigars with your benjis. Dead presidents deserve respect, and if you have any in yourself, you'll spend them wisely. So pass on the Patron, sit back and read up on some of the best Vegas has to offer for the regular Joe. |
Uptown's Got it Goin' On (got it goin' on) (8)You know, the default description "Here's where I like to come alive after 5" actually works. With the resurgence of the phoenix that is The Fox and everything else firing on all cylinders in Uptown, I imagine many a warm summer night spent enjoying food, drink, music, and dance in Uptown this year and for many to come. |
Central Coast Wino Tours! (25)Why not take a drive down the 101 and taste some great wine along the way, enjoy the sun, and just be a damn Californian? :-D |
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this Oakland (18)Shakespeare was actually talking about Oakland when he said "this other Eden, demi-paradise," didn't you know? The weather's nice, the prices easy, the people friendly, and only a great fool would say there's nothing to do here, much less start a land war in asia or take iocaine powder. Just keep your street smarts about you. |
Travels With Brimley (13)A Boy and His Dog (and when we have days off together, a girl) do Napa/Sonoma. Brimley's quite the connoisseur, you see, and advises me on some of my more impetuous purchases. :-D |
North Oakland reprazent! (22)shop local and keep oakland booty-full. |
Easy Bay Wino Tour (9)There are some fantastic little wineries here, seemingly every month, and fantastic tasting rooms to check them out at. Get sleazy in the easy bay with some fellow winos!Uh, one of these isn't a winery, but Hangar One is so, so good and close to Rosenblum that you will overlook that, k? k. |
Temescal - Why Leave? (13)The thing I love about Temescal is . . . it's a microcosm of the universe, or at least the Bay Area. Cyclists stream every which way, yuppies dine out here and at Dona Tomas and Pizzaiolo, and regular folks hang out at the Avenue. And there is Lanesplitter. And there are Korean places. And there is Moroccan and Ethiopian. Mexican. Bakesale Betty's where besides the baked goods, you can get the famous fried chicken sandwich. Coffee cafes. (no free wifi, though, what's up w/dat?) Wine discount shops. Chocolatiers. You can travel from New York (Lanesplitter) to every region of SF. (all the rest) and still make it home in time for dinner. The 'mescal has everything. And the weather is great. Why leave? |
Anderson Valley - A little plot of heaven in Mendocino County (15)(under construction)Mendocino is beautiful, and the Anderson Valley is the best of what it has to offer as far as wines go. You'll find a few wineries in the hotter areas by 101, but it's this cool valley that really brings out the best in, among other things, Pinot Noir. You'll find the crowd a little older than in Napa or Sonoma, but that's not a bad thing if you truly love wine and aren't just there for the social thing and the hotties. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;-) |
