Locke Library is a fairly standard mid-sized Toronto Public Library branch, but I'll always have a soft spot for it because I grew up nearby.  A facelift in the 90s updated it, and it has a lovely spot on Alexander Muir park with a playground nearby.…More »

  Update - 8/14/2009

Just a postscript to my previous review.  I still love the TRL, and it is a wonderful institution - but it's a frikkin' labour of love getting things from the stacks.  In list form:

1. Find I can request books from the stacks on computer.  Oooh!  This…More »

This pretty new building (I love the central high ceiling) houses an excellent multilingual collection, several shelves of graphic novels, community programs, great computer access, and the biggest, coolest children's library I've seen at the TPLs.…More »

Wychwood Branch is a smallish but grand-feeling library, situated near the tony neighbourhoods of Wychwood Park & Deer Park, and the somewhat more scraggly (yet beloved) Hillcrest Park area.

Despite the library's size, the shelves are good for a…More »

North York Public Library is a palace of books on the subway line.  I didn't know a thing about it until I was looking for a few volumes that were only available there.  Did everyone else know about this but me?  You go to North York Centre on the…More »

O muses, let me sing of my love for the concrete chicken.

Robarts always reminds me of the line about architects and their mistakes - "plant vines".  There aren't enough vines in the GTA to cover the dodgy angles at Robarts.

The simple fact is that…More »

The Search for Breakfast in Wychwood (6)

Since the closing of our two favourite places for breakfast (the lamented Queen's Dairy and D-Ganz, which also did a great steak), my husband and I have wandered from Bathurst past Oakwood looking for a cheap, satisfying, cozy place to get our scrambled/brown/sausage/t ea on. Recommendations gratefully received!

I think we now have a clear winner in the $10+/per diner category.

Thai Thai Thai Love Love Love (13)

How did Canadians live before Thai food?  I know there was a dark age in the early eighties, before Satay on the Road opened, when one could hardly find a rice noodle in this town.

Now, we're up to our necks in it - and lovely as it is to have so many options, if you're going to promise me Thai, you'd better make it flavourful.  From worst to best, here is my celebration of this delicious supra-equatorial cuisine.

Best food near Wychwood (8)

After three and a half years in the area, these are my favourites.

We're short on breakfast and I wish we had a good bar or pub, but man, can we ever do dinner!

Most of these are budget options.  If your idea of romance is $35 pastas, look elsewhere, but these are great places for dinner with friends - or with a special someone who prefers good food to tablecloths.  Don't forget a sundae after: very romantic!

Wedding Dress Day on the Danforth (4)

On a rainy May morning, my Bride-to-Be friend and I set out for a last-ditch dress excursion for her September wedding. We kept to the Danforth: multiple dress store options and great restaurants for lunch.  The last review refers to an earlier day.

Book Shopping! (9)

Toronto is a great place to overload your bookcases.  From the classy to the seedy, these are my favourite stops:
