My tour of Boston area restaurants continued with Craigie on Main. I had a fabulous dinner here tonight with my wife and parents; everybody had a great time and immensely enjoyed the food and service. Craigie on Main features creative, fresh upscale…More »
We recently completed our first visit to the Hartstone Inn; we stayed in the Sunflower Room. The room was massive (more of an apartment than a room), clean and had a great two person jacuzzi tub, gas fireplace and a comfortable bed. The only…More »
I was in town from Chicago visiting my family and my wife and sister teamed up and planned out a day of shopping on Newbury Street. I knew I was going to need a respite, so I booked a lunch for one at L'Espalier at the risk of leaving my wife…More »
My wife and I enjoy weekend get-a-ways from Chicago to Southwestern Michigan and when we come up to these parts Tabor Hill is the crown jewel of restaurants. Tabor Hill is the nicest winery around and the restaurant features large windows with…More »
The Immigrant Restaurant possesses prestigious Four Diamond status courtesy of the AAA rankings. Having enjoyed a few Four Diamond venues in Chicago I was a little skeptical that a venue in little Kohler, WI would match up to some of Chicago's upper…More »
Dinner at Norfolk Chop House was an amazing finish to a fun vacation. After spending a few days in North Carolina's outer banks we had one night at a Nrofolk airport hotel before an early morning flight back to Chicago. Fortunately we had a rental…More »

I grew up down the street from Armando's and literally have been coming here for nearly forty years. This was my favorite restaurant in childhood and I was here just about every week. Armando sponsored my little league team and was so friendly to me…More »
I had a very nice lunch at Blue Point while in town for the OBX marathon. Blue Point has the reputation of being among the best restaurants on the Outer Banks and it did to dissapoint. What is great is the lunch menu is similar to the dinner menu,…More »
I had a couple very enjoyable dinners here a while back while on a business trip to San Diego. I was meandering around the Gas Lamp district perusing menus and the Crab Hut offerings seemed really appealing and the price right. Having spent some time…More »

Arnold's features fried, raw, and steamed seafood in a fun atmosphere. The prices are reasonable (though not inexpensive) for Cape Cod and you order at the counter and seat yourself rather than have waiter service. You receive a pager that vibrates…More »
This is such a wonderful dessert venue. My wife and I make sure to stop here at least once (usually more) every time we are in town and I wish we had a similar venue back home in Chicago. Our favorite is the chocolate bark, especially the toffee…More »
High Cotton BBQ is a great option if you are seeking a tasty inexpensive meal in a laid back, casual atmosphere. They feature typical BBQ fare with all the fixins. I opted for the combination platter which came with a few ribs, some pulled pork, and…More »
I was attending a conference at the Omni Parker House and opted for a quick lunch today at Parker's Restaurant. I mentioned in my Open Table reservation notes that I needed to be in and out rather quick and they took note of this and were very…More »
I am on vacation in Cape Cod and recently had dinner at Joe's with my wife and parents; I have been here a handful of times now. Joe's has a rather varied menu and the food is generally pretty good, but it is priced a tad high. During prior visits I…More »
I had a late lunch today at Black Pelican after a day of sightseeing on the Outer Banks. We had driven to Roadanthe, which was rather desolate so we were starving by the time we made it back to Kitty Hawk. Black Pelican is set up like a typical…More »
Best Chicago Brunch (7)Weekend brunch is something I look forward to all week; here are my favorite spots. |
Michelin: Star These Restaurants! (8)These are the best venues I have dined in that have not been awarded a coveted Michelin star. If I were a Michelin Inspector (and I am ready and willing) these restaurants would all be awarded at least one star. Some of these were snubbed by the Michelin man, some are small venues that flew under the radar and some are new. All however are outstanding. |
World's 50 Best Restaurants According to Erick (50)Each April Restaurant Magazine releases their prestigious ranking of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. In anticipation of this event I am releasing my personal ranking of the 50 Best Restaurants I have dined in during the past year (hence the heavy Chicago emphasis). Congratulations Chef Achatz; you are the recipient of first and second place! |
Best Chi Town Bars & Pubs (12)This list comprises my very favorite Chicago locales to enjoy an adult beverage. Be it chic ambiance, unique cocktails, tasty bar grub, friendly servers or what not, these IMHO constitute the best of Chicago's plethora of bars. |
Bib Gourmand: My Ranking (15)This list comprises my ranking of restaurants I have dined in recently that have received Michelin's Bib Gourmand recognition (which refers to venues serving quality meals for $40 or less). Listed from best to worst. |
Top Dinners of 2010's (46)The following are my favorite dinners I have enjoyed in Chicago so far since 2010 (the list will be updated periodically). The list is in ranked order (with the first on the list being the best). If you want an amazing dining experience including outstanding food, great service, and nice ambiance all rolled into one, pick any of these venues and you can't go wrong. Please note that some restaurants I awarded fewer stars to may rank higher on this list than those with more stars; this is due to value being factored in when I award stars, but not in this ranking. |
Michelin Star (13)These venues have been allotted a coveted star (or two or three) by the Michelin man - for what it's worth, here is my ranking. Please note that my ranking here does not factor in cost, whereas my awarding of stars does (so a restaurant with fewer stars may appear higher on this list than a restaurant with more stars). |
Worst Meals Since 2010 (5)The following is a list of my worst dining experiences in Chicago since 2010. These experiences fell flat; be it poor quality cuisine, lousy service, mediocre food priced like fine dining, the experience falling short of expectations etc. The higher up on my list, the worse the experience. With so many great venues in Chicago, I recommend avoiding these restaurants unless you are seeking to have a good story to tell your friends. |
