Apparently, I am a slow learner. Last year I visited this place for lunch and ordered the pad thai with peanut sauce. Extra peanutty pad thai! How could this be a bad thing?
Picture a pound of rice noodles. Picture a separate bowl. Picture…More »
The previous reviewer was dead on. The following is exactly what happened to me last night: "you play the "ok, we're going to eat at the next restaurant that appears on our left" game, and Friendly Thai ends up being that place because you're too far…More »
Hum. Well, it's inexpensive. I went for the chicken satay and pad thai, and both were fine; not horribly authentic, but tasty. The staff seemed knowledgeable about which items on their menu were gluten-free, which was good for my friend. The…More »
Cross-eyed after an intense essay-writing session, I walked along Bloor looking for some place with table service, a/c, some healthy food, and a pleasant ambiance.
Thai Basil was busy, but not too busy, so I though I'd give it a try. Their prices…More »

Oh, Spring Rolls. I went to your downtown locations when I was an undergrad, and sitting in an orchid-filled room sipping a lichee martini and eating Thai felt like the height of cosmopolitan sophistication.
The Y&E area Spring Rolls is even…More »
I've had an okay experience at Bow Thai, but friends have not been impressed. For god's sake, go to Thai House a few blocks east, which is the best Thai in the city.

I visited last night: the long and the short of it?
Ambiance: two stars. It's nice-looking, but the interior looks very 'cold' on a November night - dim and comfortless. Still, except for the ugly tiled floor, the finishes & furniture aren't bad.

I should also mention that they're a bit fuzzy about gluten content, so don't bring your celiac friends. The place just south on Vaughan knows their gluten, though I don't prefer their food.
Good, dependable Thai and Malasian food. Nothing out of the ordinary, and service can be a trifle… Read more »
Relative newcomer Spicy & Sweet is in a storefront that's hosted a series of tiny, cursed mom & pop restaurants. Before this it was the Jamaican place with the lovely service and grade D breakfasts. Before that, it was a Cuban joint so authentic…More »
Tasty Thai with a home-made feeling; no ketchup pad thai here. The plastic cups and placemats give it a take-out feel, but the prices are good and the service is very pleasant. There's a garlic & pepper dish with lots of oyster sauce I just love!…More »
Vanipha Lanna is the best Thai I've had in the area - tasty, with good ingredients. It's big and airy, with mildly wacky decor (orchid fountain, anyone?). I wish they would open the area with the Japanese-style low tables for customers. Remember,…More »
Fresh ingredients, a great menu, and skilled preparation - I've never had better Thai.
Particular favourites: spicy basil beef, ginger chicken, spring rolls, sticky rice with peanut sauce, mango salad, and their amazing pad thai! Thai beers are…More »
Honestly, I think I could eat their red curry forever. However, I think I need to do some more research before writing a lengthy review - maybe eight or nine trips. This week.
The Search for Breakfast in Wychwood (6)Since the closing of our two favourite places for breakfast (the lamented Queen's Dairy and D-Ganz, which also did a great steak), my husband and I have wandered from Bathurst past Oakwood looking for a cheap, satisfying, cozy place to get our scrambled/brown/sausage/t ea on. Recommendations gratefully received!I think we now have a clear winner in the $10+/per diner category. |
Best food near Wychwood (8)After three and a half years in the area, these are my favourites. We're short on breakfast and I wish we had a good bar or pub, but man, can we ever do dinner! Most of these are budget options. If your idea of romance is $35 pastas, look elsewhere, but these are great places for dinner with friends - or with a special someone who prefers good food to tablecloths. Don't forget a sundae after: very romantic! |
Toronto Libraries (6)Toronto's got an awesome library system; here are the ones I know. |
Wedding Dress Day on the Danforth (4)On a rainy May morning, my Bride-to-Be friend and I set out for a last-ditch dress excursion for her September wedding. We kept to the Danforth: multiple dress store options and great restaurants for lunch. The last review refers to an earlier day. |
Book Shopping! (9)Toronto is a great place to overload your bookcases. From the classy to the seedy, these are my favourite stops: |
