Mocha Madness!

See All Lists
So in all fairness I have to preface this list with a warning of sorts: I only drink mochas. No lattes, no steamers, no brew drip, no canadianas or americanos or straight shots. But I've made a pretty exhaustive study of mocha makers in the city, and I know what I like in a mocha: it must be hot, chocolate-y without being syrupy and cloying, with a strong yet not overpowering coffee vibe. Here are some of my fave spots to satisfy mocha-related cravings ...

Looking for reliability with a shot of whimsy in addition to your steamed chocolate with a shot of espresso?  Look no further.  I've tasted mochas all over town, and this place is my fave.  Mainly because I find the staff to be pleasant at the very…More »

When I heard that my neighbourhood was getting a real live espresso-based-coffee-joint, I was super excited.  And I am happy to say that Two If By Sea (or T.I.B.S as it's sometimes known) has not let me down.

I have two teeny-tiny beefs:  the coffee…More »

Ahhh Alterego's!
One of my favourite spaces, north end or otherwise.  I dig that it's filled with books for the perusing and folks from all over the neighbourhood/country/globe.  I never know who'll be parked on the sunny street-side patio or what…More »

Oh the Steve O shack of happy mocha goodness!  For a long time I didn't patronize this particular Steve Os because I thought I needed an automobile - but as Lacey points out - not so!

Anyone can stroll (or roll) up to the window and be served by the…More »

I know what you're thinking: a Starbucks is a Starbucks is a Starbucks ... and that's probably true.  But if you are a fan (and they must have some or there wouldn't be new stores popping up all over the place), then you want to know where the…More »

I was going to the downtown Steve Os even before I started guzzling mochas (back then chai latte was what I sought out).  I'm also partial to their breakfast cookies - it's like a bowl of granola in a delish portable form!  Who says it's wrong to…More »

I'm a fan of Just Us in general, though more inclined to visit their Barrington Street location since I don't often find myself way up Spring Garden.  But when I do I am grateful and happy to spot the lovingly refurbished old house that is Just Us…More »

Shop ... Local! (8)

Call it altruism or call it laziness - I've always been a big proponent of local shops.  Partly because I tend to live nearer to downtown that the 'burbs, and often that's where a lot of these kinds of stores can be found.  But I also believe it's cool to spend my money in places where more of it will stay within the community.

The Delight That Is Dartmouth (13)

These days the media is all about calling Dartmouth "the Brooklyn to Halifax's Manhattan".  Maybe yes, maybe no (would that make it "Dooklyn"?).   No matter what you call it, the next time you're on the other side of the harbour, check out some of the goodness D'town has to offer (and know that I'm just getting started with this list - expect frequent additions of awesome)!
