having been to hawaii many times at this point, i do know that is THE place to get your souvenir on! the place is huge, but has anything you could ever need for your friends on the mainland!

i admit that matsumoto's is my standard, but aoki's is a very close second place. definitely worth a visit if matsumoto's is crazy crowded next door (which it often is)...

their kona coffee is awesome!
things i remember from cheeseburger in paradise:
* "hash browns" that tasted like french fries
* the scary, overly vigilant woman in too much hawaiian print who kept on flapping her arms to keep the pigeons away from her
i probably won't be back.
if you like famous amos, but want a slightly chewier cookie, visit chip and cookie! the chocolate chip with macadamia was my favorite (but you can sample all of them!)
note: they sell the cookies by weight!

four stars for the breakfast buffet and being on the beach!
delicious hawaii-centric breakfast combinations (i'm a big fan of portuguese sausage and eggs), large portions, great prices, and good coffee too! just don't come with a strict time limit, or with more than a couple others (on the weekends, anyway),…More »
haleiwa = wave frenzied fun = a ravenous jill
with that in mind, haleiwa supermarket has a good place to stock up on the snacks that will inevitably be needed to "tide" (heh!) me over. the lady in front makes some fine bbq as well!
Neighbourhood: Moilili
i love hawaii, and therefore love hawaiian music.
izzy kamakawiwo'ole, kealii reichel and jake shimabukuro are three of my favorites!
mahalo, hawaii, for such talent!

inevitably, i end up strolling through here, because someone or other needs to find something for a friend/significant other/family member/etc. on the mainland. i'd steer clear if i could though, and head to the swap meet!
a rousing afternoon at makapu'u is only improved upon by a stop at keneke's afterwards! their mochiko chicken, or kalua pork will surely keep you going (or at least standing) for the rest of the day!

mmm, gingerade and pizza. despite that this combination inevitably leads to gas, it is still a great place to grab grub in kona!
i love hamburgers, and kua aina does it right!
i've tried all types of burgers in my life, and every burger i've had from kua aina, has been delicious. some might say it has everything to do with the workout beforehand (that is why you are going to…More »

see, while i was in college, i decided i would run cross country for no particular reason. as part of the season, we had to run a race here. in sweaty, humid hawaii. at 3 pm. while the organizers bbqed,…More »
cute shop, healthy ingredients, nice people, great product. lanikai juice is just what hawaii needs*!
* well, except for the nice people. locals definitely have us mainlanders beat by a long shot!
no trip to hawaii is complete without a trip to matsumoto's, ono hawaiian foods, and leonard's!
just try to wait a while before repeating that combination. i'm pretty sure the heart doesn't appreciate it.
the last time i was in the honolulu area, we spent much of our evenings here. why? because there was no cover they had happy hour until 11 pm! wow! can't say i love the mall ambience (it is in the middle of the mall), but somehow the lava flows…More »

just another reason why i need to move to hawaii...
(my other reasons involve malasadas, huli huli chicken, and spam musubi. oh, i like their beaches too!)
Neighbourhood: Waikiki
this is actually japanese fast food, so it's really not that exciting... but you should try their rice burgers!
* SIGH * why do you have to be so far away? WHY?
i suppose its just as well, because i would eat that kalua pig and lomi lomi salmon every day of my (inevitably short) life!
but whining aside, ono is simply the best local food on the island. so, go!…More »
the okonomiyaki was well-executed, and i enjoyed the experience and service, but it was still a bit overpriced for what it is. of course, it is on kalakaua, so i guess i was asking for it!
it's lovely, right on kalakaua, and service was superb! we even got a platter of fresh, tropical fruit upon arrival (though i think that had something to do with a mills connection!)
if you are short on the dough, and need a place to stay in honolulu, you should stay here! it's a little out of the way, but still central. service is friendly, and the accomodations are clean.
it's always great to re-unite with old friends. on this trip to hawaii, i was able to do just that.
shokudo seemed an appropriate place to reunite, as shokudo itself, did a great job of uniting flavors from japanese, hawaiian, and american…More »

it's across the street from the university of hawaii, so if you find yourself spending a lot of time there (like i was), it was a good place to have around. the people were really friendly, and i really enjoyed their mozarella pesto sandwich!

more like waialua cafe, i'd say.
i haven't tried much besides their amazing cookies, but their sandwiches, and smoothies all look really good. prices are very reasonable, and the staff is really sweet too. i'll have to come again!
