The best drink deal in Vancouver I have found. Tuesdays at Whineo's are a good way to brush away the midweek blues.
$7.50 pitchers iare a win but the $4 appies are the icing on my now hungover cake. The grilled cheese is pretty damn tasty with what I…More »

Breakfast & Brunch
Neighbourhoods: Downtown, Granville Entertainment District
What I love about brunch, is that you can struggle out of bed in the early afternoon and then quite acceptably still order breakfast fare without so much as the batter of an eyelid. This was me this Saturday at Twisted Fork.
I had a croque monsieur…More »

Am I here to get my hair cut, buy a fireballs record or get some custom rims fitted to my caddy. Luckily it was to get my haircut because I hate the fireballs and I ride the bus.

I decided to give the Forum another chance on the weekend. I nearly laughed when as soon as we walked in a server came over and took our order straight away. This server looked after us really well all night and we didn't have to wait for drinks at…More »

Boo. I thought I had finally found a decent coffee in this city full of blurgghh Blenz and sucky Starbucks. The location around the corner has given me a great coffee but this one was horrible.
To make it worse the girl who made my coffee made a…More »

Ahh the best part about going back here is that apparently I am banned for life. There was no where else to go that didn't have a line so I jumped in for a beer. Well to be honest it did have a line but that was easily parted because a girl we were…More »
Another victim of the draconian licensing laws in this city. Licensing must be breathing down their necks because the waitress wouldn't clear our plates while we were still drinking because they wanted to be able to show that we were eating. Um what…More »

Pubs
Neighbourhoods: Downtown, Granville Entertainment District
This place is pretty much what you would expect. A standard Irish pub without pretension and a cover charge. Real 20oz pints and if you want something different you should definitely indulge in one of the giant glasses of Hoegaarden.
Sometimes it is nice to go to a pub that is just that, a pub. It is not a resto-lounge or any other hybrid style of nightspot that Vancouver seems to love so much. You can order straight from the bar and wander around at your leisure. Much like the…More »

The Roxy is an institution here in Vancouver. People love to hate it but everybody has been here at one time or another. There seems to eternally be a line up and you may initially be disappointed if you are expecting some type of super club inside.…More »

When I lived in London I used to love Urban Outfitters and found a lot of awesome clothes there. This store and the North American version in general is just not nearly as good. The selection for guys is relatively tiny and stocks way too many faux…More »

Shopping at H&M can drive you insane. There are a lot of cheap and nasty clothes and 90% of them are fairly ugly. However, if you seek you shall find and I can always dig up some gems here. Great fitted business shirts, blazers and other basics can…More »
Downtown 1hr lunch spots (12)I am on a mission to find the top 10 lunch spots within 4 blocks of my work. Yes, it will be dangerous as I battle through bain maries filled msg laden goop, sushi with fillings that smell like the hull of a fishing boat, chain outlets with their bright lights, scripted greetings and pimply staff.I will have to fend off crowds armed only with a lunch tray and a plastc knife and mend my wounds with napkins the size of a ipod but I will succeed. Mark my words, by years end I will be able to sense a health code violation at 20 paces and make my way in and out of the most crowded food court blindfolded, balancing a tray on my big toe with the best grub these 4 blocks have to offer. |
New York (22)So much to do and so little time. |
Brunch (5)Because on Sunday I want someone to do the cooking for me |
Robson Street (7)Optimistically dubbed the Rodeo Drive of Vancouver |
Portland (16)Stumptown, PDX, City of Roses. What ever you want to call it Portland is a great place to visit. Pair a fantastic food culture with an abundance of microbreweries, burgeoning music scence and friendly small city attitude and you can't go too far wrong...apart from the rain that is. |
Denman Street (8)The sometimes forgotten street in the West End. Denman stretches from the bay to the harbour and is home to an abundance of places to eat. |
Gastown (6)A touch of class and a touch of grit |
Burger Urge (4)There is some kind of beauty in the simplicity of a well made burger. The soft bun, the lightly charred meat and the complimentary condiments. This simple north American staple is a hot topic on the internet, with arguments from origins to components to cooking styles debated by purists to molecular gastronomers alike. Who does make the best burger? |
Los Angeles without the traps (24)For the most part everyone I know who travels to LA ends up at Disneyland, Universal Studios and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I want to do those type of things about as much as I want to discuss the pros and cons of various feminine hygiene products with my mother. So I tried to set out to find out about another part of LA, one that I would enjoy. |
Davie Street (14)A block or so from where I live lies Davie Street, Vancouver's so called gaybourhood. it stretches from stunning English Bay to Yaletown and along it's sidewalks you can find everything from hammers to hair removal and eggs benny to erotic fiction. |
