I ate here my last day in Charleston and OMG wish I could have come back and eaten here again and again. I had a fried green tomato sandwich with bacon and shrimp, which was perfect in every way. The shrimp on the sandwich were, by themselves, among…More »
This hotel is everything you could want from a charming yet affordable bed and breakfast.
Our room in the carriage house was quiet and comfortable. My parents found it small, but really, you have to expect some sort of tradeoff for your charming yet…More »
It's a close call in a city full of excellent restaurants, but I think this was the best dinner I had in Charleston.
I'll start with the food because that was the best part of the experience. My companions all chose fish, but I ordered the chicken,…More »
Even out of season, the gardens here were gorgeous and unique.
If you're a history buff, be aware that the house is post-bellum and the gardens were mostly created during the 20th century. The house tour was rather uninspiring - it's really not…More »

I arrived at Tristan pretty much straight from a 12 hour epic travel disaster encompassing flooded public transportation, cancelled flights, lost luggage, and a madcap dash from Long Island to New Jersey to catch the only flight out of New York that…More »
When I first walked in here, I expected to be disappointed. The restaurant was nearly empty, too brightly lit and we were seated by a bar playing a football game. Also, the menu was full of things like Caesar salad and calamari that suggest a lack of…More »
We went here because we had been eating Lowcountry-inspired fare for four days straight and wanted a bit of a change.
Our first table was right next to a large and rather noisy party, but they happily moved us around the corner to a quieter table.…More »

If you like touring houses to gawk at how the other half (used to) live, the Nathanial Russel House offers a nice balance of lavishness and taste. I was particularly struck by the oval dining room and extensive use of trompe l'oeil. If you're looking…More »
This house has been preserved and furnished to give a good sense of how it would have appeared in the late eighteenth century (you know, when George Washington was sleeping there). The tour was relatively brief, but the guides were knowledgeable and…More »
The Hunley was the first submarine to ever successfully sink a ship in combat, and then itself mysteriously sank shortly after the engagement.
The sub is sitting in a water bath to avoid corrosion - almost as interesting as the thing itself is seeing…More »
The best part of Middleton Place are the sweeping river views from the gardens. I was there on a gorgeous fall afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed the views, the gardens, the birds and the lovely, peaceful setting.
However, even skipping the house tour…More »

This is a fantastic little lunch spot that I almost didn't get to eat at because my aunt found the air conditioning insufficiently glacial.
Can I pause for a moment to complain about air-conditioning abuse? I personally detest the feeling of walking…More »
Cute little small-towny cafe with very tasty sandwiches.
It's a convenient place to stop for lunch on the way to or from the plantations, and you're definitely not paying tourist prices here.
I came here with my parents for lunch, and wished I could have come back with my friends to share a few drinks. Chill atmosphere, much better than expected food, and a nice selection of beers on tap.
I feel bad breaking this string of five-star reviews. Actually, I feel like I'm calling someone's baby ugly. But really...it's a nice park and the tree is very big, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it. We stopped and strolled for 10 minutes,…More »
I think this place could be fantastic, if you know what to order. As it was, our experience was very inconsistent.
The excellent:
The vegetable sides. All were outstanding. Really outstanding.
The pimento cheese. Wow. Best we had.
The okra pickles. Yum.

I liked the cute location and friendly service. I also liked the very reasonable prices, and plethora of seasonal veggie options. But I do have to ask...what did these poor vegetables do to deserve being drowned so thoroughly in butter and cheese?
So…More »
I went here because how else am I going to see tea being made without traveling halfway around the world? (Argentina, actually, I learned on the tour.) It's a pretty nice place to kill an hour or two.
The free tour of the factory is pretty cool,…More »
Funny and a little eerie to see an isolated colonnade on an unkempt lawn silhouetted against the sunset. I actually think it's pretty cool that the place has been left to run a bit wild.

Therefore, you should visit more aquariums, where there are many, many mood-lifting fish, circulating peacefully for your viewing…More »
Definitely pricier than other local cab companies, but the service was more pleasant and the cars newer and cleaner. Plus, better for the planet.
You may or may not find these tradoffs worthwhile.
On the positive side, they get you in and out quickly. Also, the people at Lost Baggage for Delta are exceptionally pleasant and apologetic, even when they're not the airport that misplaced your bag.
On the negative side, I was really craving…More »
