Dim Sum in the GTA

So you want dim sum? Tips for dim sum eating - 1. If the place is packed on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, a good sign. 2. The more Chinese people you see and the more "old" Chinese people you see, the more likely it is quality food AND value. 3. Walk to the front of the crowd at the door, find the hostess (if no one is there, wait until someone comes back), get a number or your name on the seating book, be bold but courteous. 4. In both the cart service style and made-to-order style, waiters will bring around dishes asking you if you'd like to try this "special" dish. Generally, it is not that special. 5. Drink tea, this is meant to be slow Chinese tapas, things come quickly, but no need to gorge yourself. 6. Bring multiples of 4, best for seating and for sharing (about 4 items per dish) and ensure they enjoy pork, shrimp and shellfish (the basis for most dim sum dishes) Vegetarians should be aware that there isn't much in the way of dishes. 7. Go with the staples, sui-mai, ha-gow, law-mein-gai, cha-sui-bao, ha-cherng-fun, pai-gwhat, haam-suoy-gok, low-bak-go (you know which ones) 8. Try it because it is the best Chinese food experience ever.

You are pretty much settling for 3 stars when you go for dim sum downtown in Toronto. The best options are Lai Wah Heen and Dynasty which is a great location but both serve slightly better than average dim sum for very little value.
