While I was in France, in my youth, I had a thing for fresh French baguettes, butter, and some nice cheese. Put them all together, add a little historic scenic French city-scape, some mumblings in French in the background of random conversation,…More »

My mother has a strong opinion on everything. According to her, because she's my mother, she is the only one who will tell me the "real" "truth" "everytime." For example, the day before yesterday, we were browsing wedding gowns online. Not looking…More »

I hate the fact that this place is so close to where I work. And that it's not expensive. And that the ham and cheese croissants are SO BIG and tasty. They bake the ham and cheese into the croissant. None of this slicing it open, putting in the…More »

There is a reason I am so nice to my BF in the morning. When I wake up, I go for a "run" and sometimes I'll volunteer to come to the Boulange de Cole Valley to buy him some breakfast rolls. And I do. I come here, in my bright…More »

Oh Boulange. You make me want to cheat on my Boulange de Cole Valley. You're so much nicer, that guy who took my coffee order was as charismatic as it gets, and your staff is not hipper-than-thou. You know what I mean. Boulange de Cole Valley is…More »
I would like you to close your eyes and imagine, if you will, a large, fluffy, delicious doughnut made from the chewy, textured dough and fried to perfection. It has that crisp outside and tender middle bit that gives just-a-little when you bite…More »

It was MLK Monday and everyone seemed to think that it was a Saturday or Sunday. Don't gainfully employed people have to go to work?
This meant that the line was long. And there were many people who lie about whether their whole party was present.…More »

What does one do on this suddenly super hot day in the city? Does one put on one's best hoochie-mama tube dress and flip flops, marc jacobs sunglasses, and drink chilled wine and gazpacho?
Not if you're me.

Insomnia Cure (aka MSG) (11)What I previously thought was "food coma" has evolved and distinguished itself in to "MSG poisoning feels like ruffies." When I have trouble sleeping because the racing, evil thoughts in my mind torment my eternal soul, nothing says LIGHTS OUT, uncontrollably like MSG. Is it a bad idea to use MSG to cure insomnia? I have such a hard time sleeping. |
Are you SURE? Or UNSURE? Let's be safe (12)This is what I refer to as the "safe" choice. It's completely unassuming, nothing spectacular, yet not even bad enough to dislike. It's what you choose when there's the wild card in the group, the one who is a picky eater, never left her state of Texas except when she flew in an airplane for the first and last time when she was 20 and hated every moment. Heidi, I'm talking about you. |
Does a Quintuple By-Pass come with that? (21)I obediently repeat "...but I'm concerned about my cholesterol" a few times a month, but then I also gamely give in to burgers, cheesesteaks, fries, and other things a recovering vegan is proud to snog. |
Judge it by the miso soup (6)A Japanese restaurant's miso soup is the standard upon which to pass judgment. It's like the hot and sour soup in Chinese restaurants. If the restaurant cannot make a decent miso soup, all hope is lost. However, if the miso soup is delicious, proceed cautiously until you get pass "GO." Then sneak a peek under the nigiri for the pre-rubbed wasabi. Glance at the top of the fish to see if the chef has sauced it for you. If these are all present, you have yourself a great Japanese restaurant. |
sea URCHIN! see, urchin! (14)My uni fetish can get out of control. My support group for inappropriate food analogies has warned me that my obsession may require professional help. And yet, I don't think there's anything wrong with me. The taste of uni can be described as floral, buttery, umami, creamy, sweet, dreamy, intoxicating, rapturous, captivating, transcendental, and expensive. This list is for the uni (sea urchin) served, from most economical to luxurious to complete-rip-off. The sliding scale goes from "so-worth-it!" to "I-wish-I-bought-a-Snuggi e(TM)-instead." |
Kick the Craving (25)Once in a while I go on a bender about some cuisines. The more I eat of it, the more I'm not completely satisfied. I hunt, I roam and I hope for that satisfaction that will leave me feeling slightly off-kilter. But it never comes. However, I have found these places that will take the tin off a soda can. It's not exactly satisfying in any way except that a meal here will cure any cuisine craving you have. At least for the day. Eat here two days in a row and you will be cured. |
Against the Grain (19)Look at me, I'm so hip, I'm so counter culture, I'm such an advocate for the small and under-represented that I shop at these hippie-dippie, alternative, independent, right-minded school of thought places. Actually, I like these places because they usually have more variety of the things that they do well. I don't mind going to separate shops, I don't need it all in one mega-store, and I like specialization. |
Epicuriously Promiscuous a.k.a. Monogomy (a How-To) (17)A girl has needs. A girl's appetite can be difficult to satisfy, especially with the same old thing every day. I love my BF to death, but he's not much of a food fan (we get along in other ways, "what other ways???"). Here are places where the food keeps that eternal flame burning bright, where the cuisine relives the spark of love at first sight, where my wanderlust is sated and my urge calmed.Basically, this is where I go to be epicuriously promiscuous. I don't go with the BF because he claims not to like food (he can be a lot cray-cray). I go because the food is better than sex and I can order an encore. |
Vampires BEWARE!!! (7)Garlic fries are one of my favorite pungent foods. I love the spicy raw tingly feeling on my tongue. It makes fries more interesting. After eating garlic fries, I feel revitalized and very very smelly. But to be good garlic fries, the fries have to be crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, the garlic must be plentiful and fresh, and it must make me feel wicked eating them. I've eaten garlic fries at these places. Not all were good. |
The void is filled with nigiri (5)Sushi is the oil in my cogs. Sushi makes me feel special. When I am eating sushi, I see bunnies and puppies. I want uni all the time. It suddenly became a really big mistake when I lost focus while I was snorkeling in St. Thomas. |
