Beautiful Nicholas Hoare Books is another of those childhood favourites of mine you're probably tired of hearing about.  I'll skip over my infant transports of joy and get to the point.

I'm always surprised at the selection BMV manages to pack into their two small floors at Yonge & Eglinton.  Their literature and science fiction selections are excellent, and the mystery-thriller section is very good as well.  I like the separate…More »

This huge BMV (three floors and lots of square footage) usually has a great selection, if you can find it.  Alphabetisation is only a distant rumour here, so be prepared to root around.  Like the Y&E BMV, they have a good selection of used DVDs.…More »

The Big Book Bunker was, I've been told, actually the world's biggest for a heartbeat of time after it opened in the early 80s.  Looking a little seedy now, its huge selection of books makes up for a multitude of sins.  They skip most of the giftware…More »

This Indigo location is one of the smaller locations I've seen, but still a good size.  Of course, 3/4 of the ground floor is given over to magazines, giftware, and cards; fun for a browse, but not the main course.  The book selection is generally…More »

The Watcher's strong suit is its superfriendly owner Dave, who you'll find behind the cash more often than not.  He loves to recommend, and is very helpful.

The selection is a good mix of indie comics, superhero comics, and games, with a few RPGs on…More »

The Silver Snail has one of the best selections and stocks of graphic novels/comic books in the city.  If my sweet little neighbourhood joints have been sold out for weeks, I sigh and head down to the Snail.  Don't get me wrong, they're nice enough,…More »

The Beguiling has the best selection of Canadian and indie comics I've seen, and an excellent stock of spandex books upstairs.  They focus on comics and graphic novels entirely, and don't seem to get into games or 'limited edition busts'.  This place…More »

Mike the wild-bearded owner keeps a good stock of graphic novels, manga. and games.  The staff is helpful and the cat is fairly friendly.  It smells of the kind herb more often than the other comic shops in town, but it's probably the neighbours,…More »

The Search for Breakfast in Wychwood (6)

Since the closing of our two favourite places for breakfast (the lamented Queen's Dairy and D-Ganz, which also did a great steak), my husband and I have wandered from Bathurst past Oakwood looking for a cheap, satisfying, cozy place to get our scrambled/brown/sausage/t ea on. Recommendations gratefully received!

I think we now have a clear winner in the $10+/per diner category.

Thai Thai Thai Love Love Love (13)

How did Canadians live before Thai food?  I know there was a dark age in the early eighties, before Satay on the Road opened, when one could hardly find a rice noodle in this town.

Now, we're up to our necks in it - and lovely as it is to have so many options, if you're going to promise me Thai, you'd better make it flavourful.  From worst to best, here is my celebration of this delicious supra-equatorial cuisine.

Best food near Wychwood (8)

After three and a half years in the area, these are my favourites.

We're short on breakfast and I wish we had a good bar or pub, but man, can we ever do dinner!

Most of these are budget options.  If your idea of romance is $35 pastas, look elsewhere, but these are great places for dinner with friends - or with a special someone who prefers good food to tablecloths.  Don't forget a sundae after: very romantic!

Toronto Libraries (6)

Toronto's got an awesome library system; here are the ones I know.

Wedding Dress Day on the Danforth (4)

On a rainy May morning, my Bride-to-Be friend and I set out for a last-ditch dress excursion for her September wedding. We kept to the Danforth: multiple dress store options and great restaurants for lunch.  The last review refers to an earlier day.
