Bakery Wars: Tacoma

See All Lists
Ok, I just used the title to get your attention. There aren't many real, sole proprietor bakeries in Tacoma. And the best cakes in the city are made at Old Milwaukee, where you'll never SEE a pastry on display. You know something's afoot when you gotta order a la speakeasy. Pat is a major sugar addiction pimp. This list is seriously under construction. Here's where you can find the (baked) goods:

 1. Old Milwaukee Cafe

I'll let you in a well kept secret:  Pat, the owner of Old Milwaukee is one of the best bakers in Tacoma.  You'd never know from visiting the Cafe, because there isn't a pastry or cake in sight.  You just have to "know"...know that you can order…More »

Unfortunately inconsistency is an issue at Burning Cupcakes...I'm pretty sure I know why; they rely very heavily on a revolving door of  "interns" to man the shop for them instead of hiring a core of consistent, quality workers from the pool of…More »

Solid cupcakes - moist and, if you're into frosting, they belong to the "more frosting is better" camp.  They even sell little bites of frosting in cups for 50 cents by the register.  We tried chocolate with coconut frosting and a vanilla vanilla…More »

Inexpensive, old fashioned German lunch cafe.  I say "old fashioned" to refer to the style of the offering.  The interior (see my photo) is more like a bazaar at a VFW or  church.  I love it.

You are going here for the following:  sandwiches, soup,…More »

Doing better than the last couple of times I stopped in.  They had about six cakes and a case fairly full of different treats.  I noticed cupcakes - yawn - why bother with this almost played out trend when you serve other stuff??

A contrast in burgers (2)

Here are two burgers from Tacoma - I just wanted to study the contrasts.  For me, it's not the cost as much as the intention, attention to detail and quality.

Greedy for Toys (5)

Inspired by Dru from Vancouver BC - I decided to start working on my favorite toy store list...this is very much under construction because I don't have reviews of Wacko or Gama Go or Giant Robot...how is that possible?  I shall soon fix that...

Tacoma's 6th Ave: Coffee House Row (10)

Strange how trends work.  When we first moved here from Seattle, there was one coffee shop on 6th.  Now look:

A Slice of Main Street, Vancouver BC - for US visitors (10)

The whole Main Street drag is quite a hoppin' scene: diverse, funky, excellent and mainly local businesses. When I say "diverse" - I mean it in every way - not just the life styles and ethnicities, but the range of goods & services as well.     Here's a taste - just a sample - of what's in one small section - around the 4300 block!
