A Real Bagel

See All Lists
You've got to boil them first Baby! Usually, unless in the NY Metro area, what I've had is a doughy piece of bread with a hole in it; practically a donut without all the sugar, fillers, and toppings. A real bagel comes from a bagel shop, where the bagels are made fresh daily, or at the best places, every few hours. A real bagel has a consistency change from the crispy outside to the fluffy inside. The best bagels are fresh and hot out of the oven when served. Often it is only in the Tri-State Area where I have tasted bagels like this.

Though I now live in the city, I grew up practically next door to this bagel shop and still come back when I have the chance. I use H & R Bialy as the benchmark when rating a bagel anywhere else. I like my bagels HOT, Well Done and with a crispy…More »

I'm a helluva bagel critic so I don't like to get into hype. I ordered a bagel passing by yesterday with nothing on it just to see what the hype is all about. At 3:45 PM when other bagel shops are just clearing inventory, they were great enough to…More »

Residents of the neighborhood are usually loyal to either Jumbo or Tal Bagels, I prefer Jumbo. The name alone is what gives these guys their advantage; the jumbo sized bagels themselves. You don't get to see the bagels made here, which is something I…More »

They say you could've been a contender. Well you were a contender its just a shame you were no more than a warehouse for great bagels. Preparation isn't everything, but why not? Awesome bagel, especially if you're hungry after a night at Pacha, but…More »

This is probably the only good bagel I've ever had outside of the NY metro area. My college, a fantastic place, lacked real pizzas and bagels, and this New Yorker was well aware. Surprisingly after I denied the possibility that I would find a real…More »

Slightly better than average New York bagel. Hit or miss with how warm they come out but if ordered well done you'll get it with the crispy bottom that I like so much. Great deli and cream cheese selections. Still, I am loyal to Hot Jumbo Bagels,…More »

What a Great Pizza Entails (7)

No where in this country beats New York when it comes to Pizza. When I went away to school in Pa, I discovered that I could only indulge in a local slice after a night of drinking. Otherwise the pizza was doughy and very unauthentic.

A great pizza is not created on a template with a grid pattern, rather it is tossed by hand. An authentic pizza does not use sauce from a jar, rather it is coated with homemade sauce using the freshest of tomatoes and coated in quality mozzarella cheese. A great pizza does not have a doughy crust, instead it crisps and has a rough bottom like sandpaper. I longed for this great slice each day that I was away from New York at school.
