What/Why:
We're giving away two pairs of tickets to the next Detroit Passport to the Arts Destination: Old Hollywood at the Detroit Film Theatre!

Starting at 6:00pm, walk the Red Carpet (sponsored by Changez Salon of Royal Oak) and get your photo taken by paparazzi. DFT Film Curator Elliot Wilhelm will discuss the 2012 Oscar Nominated Short Films at 7:15pm, followed by a 7:30pm private screening of the films. At intermission, DP2A will hold a best-dressed competition for those who dressed up for the occasion. After the films have concluded, the Old Hollywood themed after-party begins in the DIA's Prentis Court for light appetizers, cash bar, and live music.

This event is private for Detroit Passport to the Arts holders but they've been nice enough to extend two pairs of tickets to this event to yelpers! All you have to do to enter is comment on this post with the name of the last great movie you saw and you'll be entered. Contest ends on Monday, January 30th at 11:59pm and we'll announce the winner on Tuesday, January 31st.

*** Please note--clicking "I'm In" will not qualify you to win. You must comment on the event below. Only one entry per person counted (your first comment will be your official entry).***

Want to go so bad you don't want to wait for the contest? Good news! You can buy one-pass tickets for this event here for $25 each: https://dp2a.org/purch...

Thanks and good luck!

The Artist - it was an elegant, charming take on the original silent film era. It makes me want a drink, opera gloves, slinky dress, and a European duke on my arm.

1/23/2012 Jiah "Foodie For Thought" C. says:

Rewatched Amadeus recently, all time fav!

Last DFT movie I saw was F is for Fake... a movie which I love, and loved even more seeing it at the DFT!   Last great old Hollywood movie I saw was - Double Indemnity... not sure if it counts... but it's a great movie!

1/23/2012 Wally "bringing down the average" S. says:

The last great "old" movie that I saw was "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Between Joan Crawford's paranoia and Bette Davis's eyes, it's a true classic and a great vehicle for 2 of the best actresses of all time.
For a modern film I really enjoyed "Water for Elephants". Although most of the movie was set to be a love story, I thought it more a story of life. The circus imagery was fantastic.

1/23/2012 Alex P. says:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Made me want to get right into reading the series.

1/23/2012 Brian "The Curator of Delightful Experiences" A. says:

Last good movie I saw was Super 8. Goonie-style movies will get me every time.

1/23/2012 Nancy K. says:

It was a while ago but at the Ann Arbor Film Festival a few years ago I saw an incredible short film about Detroit called "A City To Yourself" that blew my mind.  I also went to The Michigan Theater twice in one week recently to see Amelie because it's the greatest film of all time.  Thanks for a chance to do one of my favorite things - see obsure shorts!  Whoo hoo!

1/23/2012 Valerie G. says:

Recently watched The Trip, though I must admit I don't follow either of the British actors closely enough to get the humor...  Would love to go watch the Oscar Shorts though!

1/23/2012 Robert "Detective" C. says:

The last great film that I saw was "The Artist," a love letter to Hollywood's silent era. Each scene presented an homage to some of the great films of yore, and the soundtrack was one that makes you wish you saw it with a live orchestra accompaniment.

Other great films that I saw this year included "Midnight in Paris," "Tree of Life," "Weekend," and "Moneyball."

1/23/2012 Haroun "Hungry" K. says:

The Artist was so good I had to see it twice!

1/23/2012 Amy B. says:

Last week we saw The Help and Secret Life of Bees. Both were excellent.

I saw Mission Impossible IV! It was awesome!

1/23/2012 Jonny "Price" P. says:

The last great movie I saw was "Once", perfect timing and I got to hear a lot of the music at the Hideout.  "Midnight in Paris" was fun and I was really geeked about "Tron: Legacy "last year...

1/23/2012 Carole "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" H. says:

The last movie I saw, "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" was definitely NOT the last GREAT movie by any means.  But hey it made my little sis happy.  :)

Last great movie?  I rewatched "Crash" the other week....it swept up well deserved awards back when it came out, because it is still just as moving with each viewing.

I really loved Take Shelter that was out recently, though it wasn't in the theaters for very long. It stars Michael Shannon who I'm really starting to like as an actor (he's also in Boardwalk Empire - agent Van Alden).

1/24/2012 Steve "Sarge" W. says:

"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" was the latest great movie I've seen.  I am reading the series and it is excellent also!

The Artist.  In a world filled with "talkies" it's nice to enjoy the art of silence.

1/30/2012 Debbie Z. says:

The Man Who Would Be King, starring Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Christopher Plummer.  It was made in 1975 and adapted from a short story by the same name written by Rudyard Kipling.  The film was shot in Afghanistan and has a lot of information in it regarding imperialism.
