I just got back from trying The Rail House tonight, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it was perfect, but considering it was one of the best meals I've had in Jersey, I am still giving it 5 stars.
I went to Rail House with my fiance. The ambiance of the place is very nice, cozy, and romantic with the antique fireplace. I liked the art as well, though my fiance thought it was out of place. We started out with drinks, the sangria and pomtini, both of which were delicious. The sangria is probably the best I've had... ever. We ordered the friend shrimp and calimari as the appetizer. I wasn't looking forward to it (my fiance wanted it), but it was awesome. The batter was really flakey, and the chili sauce added a great kick.
The entrees were the one thing that let me down a little. My scallops were very good, but the sauce was a little too lemony for my taste. It was still delicious, and I scarfed it down, just not the perfection of the drinks and appetizer we received. My fiance's sirloin steak was also good, but a little overcooked. She had asked for it medium-rare, but it came out medium to medium-well. Their Rail House steak sauce was also good, though a little too similar to A1 for me.
Overall, though I was very pleased. I would agree with the NY Times review saying that this restaurant is so close to perfection. Just some slight changes would have made this dinner perfection, though I'm still giving it 5 stars. Overall, it was one of the best meals I've had in a long long time. Also, the portion was huge (which was also true of the drinks we received)... I ended up feeling like I got a lot of food for my money.
Came here on a Saturday night with the bf with no reservation - the hostess was very friendly and told us she'd try to seat us asap even though the house was full. We decided to start our meal at the bar and switch to a table if one became available. The bartender was also very pleasant and took care of us while we waited. We put in our order and were able to get seated at a table before any food arrived.
My roasted mushroom soup arrived first - and it was so delicious my bf had to order one for himself too! It wasn't the smooth bisque I was expecting - it had bits and pieces of roasted mushroom which have the soup a lovely thick and interesting texture.
The complimentary bread basket contained a few different selections - one with bits of cheese? baked into the top, another with olives baked in, and another dark bread that I couldn't pinpoint. The first two were tasty (and I used them to sop up the dregs of my mushroom soup).
We also shared the seared seafood on a bed of polenta as an appetizer - it was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Had a few scallops, calamari, a shrimp and tomato ragout on the polenta.
For our entrees: he got the roasted duck Muscovy with cherry gastrique and replaced his side with mushrooms and spinach. He could not stop raving about his side! We both liked the duck, which he ordered medium rare, but was still a bit hard to chew. It tasted like steak? Surprisingly. It had a really nice crust, which was a nice contrast to the chewy meat.
I ordered the half size ricotta gnocchi dish, which was mixed with mushrooms, spinach and some other stuff. Too be honest, wasn't good - the spinach overwhelmed the dish, and even alone the gnocchi was tasteless. The half size had me stuffed too - so if you're going to try it anyway I'd advise you to just stick with that.
For dessert our waitress Casey suggested the bananas foster, creme brûlée (if you're a coconut fan), or the gelatos and sorbets. We decided to share the bananas foster which came with vanilla gelato. Neither of us had ever had it before so it's hard to give a fair opinion - I liked it but the bf thought it was a bit sweet. He did enjoy the gelato though, the texture was very creamy and light!
Service was very attentive and not hovering. The iced tea was weird...don't know if we got a funky batch. The place does not seat many, and the inside is furnished like an old-fashioned house. I thought it was fine, the bf thought it was snooty. The price was definitely fair, not too pricey if you shop around the menu a bit!
I stumbled upon the Rail House as I was walking to a recommended restaurant down the street. I'm really happy I decided to walk in and look at the menu as I had a wonderful experience here.
They have a great menu, with many options for each person in your party from vegetarian, fish and beef dishes, all looked amazing. I started off with the Chicken Sate which was really amazing. It was perfectly cooked and well seasoned the only downfall was that it disappeared so quickly! The Wine selection was very nice as well, you'll find a wine you like fairly easily.
The service was also impeccable and the staff were very attentive, but not hovering, which lent it to a very nice and relaxing experience.
When I come back to visit this area, I'll be stopping back by The Rail House, as well as recommending it to my friends and colleagues.
Very nice. Food was good. Excellent service. Had lobster soup no lobster bits but good. Also had sea bass. Was good. My wife loved her meal. Very romantic place.
We happened upon Rail House this evening while out for a walk and decided to grab a quick drink on the patio. When we entered the patio we were greeted by the owner, Michael, who made us feel at home.
Although we had already eaten we decided to get a drink and an appetizer. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Satay--wonderful! It was so tasty we ordered seconds. For dessert we had the gelato trio and passion fruit panna cotta. Both were exceptional. The gelato trio comes with a light vanilla with shaved almonds and a dollop of peanut butter, pistachio and coffee with chocolate covered crisps on top-all made at Rail House. It's obvious that they use high quality ingredients and have an experienced attention to detail chef. The passion fruit panna cotta was incredible, I repeat, INCREDIBLE. It comes with a fruit salsa, finely chopped mango, raspberry puree, fresh raspberry. This is a must try.
We will be spending lots of time on their patio this summer. It is well landscaped, intimate without being cramped and the fireplace adds to the ambiance. Tasteful music was also playing but wasn't too loud. Attention to detail seems to be their specialty.
Although we didn't have an entree the appetizer and desserts we had were fantastic, couldn't have been better. We highly recommend The Rail House and will be returning very soon.
