1st visit: Korma chicken and lamb-stuffed naan
My sister and I came here at an odd hour for a late lunch/early dinner before catching a movie up the street. Unfortunately for us, we arrived just as they were clearing away the lunch buffet and preparing for the dinner buffet. Hence, our a la carte order. Both items were delicious and we left with contentedly full bellies.
2nd visit: dinner buffet on a Sunday night
My boyfriend and I decided to come here for dinner last night and we were not disappointed. We both went with the buffet, and we ordered one drink. The total with tax was around $27. We enjoyed Chicken Tikka Masala, Mushroom Masala, Chicken Korma, Saag Paneer, vegetable pakora, rice pudding and garlic naan. When we came in, they asked whether we'd like plain or garlic naan, and brought out a basket for our table when it was ready. Service was excellent. They refilled our drinks and offered to bring us more naan, but we were too stuffed!
They also have free delivery for nearby residents, so we might consider doing that next time. Although, they do have a fun atmosphere with Bollywood music videos on their TV screens. Either way, we'll definitely partake of their delicious and reasonably priced meals in the near future.
My friends and I went for their lunch buffet for $8.99. It was definitely a great meal for the price. Unfortunately I have no idea what I ate so I can't really say what was good. But I can tell you this, everything they I tried in the buffet was good. A lot of them seem to be a chicken or curry based. I would have like to have seen more variety in the buffet menu. They all looked similar and probably made with the same base. It all did mesh well together.
Their garlic naan bread was fantastic. We were dipping it into their curry and it was really good.
i'd definitely eat here again.
I was led here by a coupon in my Uptown coupon book. When I first arrived, it wasn't what I expected. It has the feel of a to-go restaurant where the tables are scattered about so people can just seat themselves. But in fact, they seated us and treated it like a regular restaurant experience.
At first, the servers were very friendly and attentive-- so attentive that they kept coming by to check in on us before we even knew what to order. When we did order, we learned that the 2-for-1 coupon we had did not work on combo meals. Not a big deal, but it did mean that we had to pay extra for rice and bread. Also, they require you to buy two beverages, and since I was in walking distance of my house, I thought I'd live it up and get a glass of wine-- heck, maybe two glasses. Sadly, they do not have any alcohol here, so I went with a milkshake instead.
We ordered our food, and it came out soon afterwards. I had asked for very mild-- no spice-- but to a wuss like me, it was a bit spicy. I've been to other Indian restaurants (like Bombay) where when I say no spice, there is no spice. But otherwise, the food was of decent quality and definitely high in quantity. My boyfriend and I could have easily split our entree and would have still been fine. The rose milkshake was ok at first, but after a while it was too sweet for me and I couldn't drink it anymore.
At this point I would have given it four stars, except they went and ruined our experience by taking FOREVER to come out with the bill. It seems like the servers disappeared at this point or if they were around, they were completely ignoring my boyfriend and me. There were maybe 10 customers at most in the restaurant, but it took 20 minutes at the very least (my boyfriend thinks closer to 30 minutes) just to get the bill. I will never comprehend how service can be so great at so many restaurants until the end with the bill. Don't they realize last impressions are often lasting impressions?
Overall, there was nothing great that stood out about this restaurant and the service kind of ruined it. With so many other great restaurants in Hillcrest, there's no reason to go back here. On the plus side, if you like Bollywood music videos, they play a whole channel of them. It made waiting for the bill a bit more bearable.
Nice value for a buffet lunch. And very personable staff. The boyf and I were planning on grubbing at Bombay but they close for a few hours in the afternoon. We knew Tandoori had just opened and were curious. Mainly hungry, but also curious. This place lacks the bells and whistles of Bombay but provides a straightforward, convenient, great-bang-for-your-buck value. You'll find most of the American "Indian food" favorites on the buffet line. Plus some nice surprises like the subtly flavored but satisfying poppyseed slaw. Their naan is GREAT when baked fresh.
I'll return soon. With hungry friends.
Highlight: Paneer! It's certainly better than mine!
