The sushi here is flawless! I've been friends with Liz Kuge, Judy and Steve Kuge's daughter for four years now, and as a family, they put out really awesome food. Most of the restaurants around Thousand Oaks that I've found are owned or managed by Korean people. Not to say that Koreans don't make great sushi, but something about the authenticity of having Japanese chefs who have been practicing the craft for years keeps pulling me back to the restaurant. One of my favorite rolls is the salmon skin roll. It's buttery, luscious, and melts in your mouth. All the special rolls here are sublime. I usually frown upon sushi restaurants that play around too much with the sanctity of the simple combination of rice, fish, and nori. I especially had trouble with the use of rice paper when I first saw the menu. I thought it would take away from the briny flavor that is so distinctly Japanese. False. The rice paper lets you taste the pure flavor of the fish itself, and doesn't disguise it with salt. I will tell you for a fact that their fish is completely fresh and straight outta Japan. I was talking to Liz one day and I said, "Yea your guys' fish is really fresh. Do you get it from Ventura?" and she laughed in my face. Although they're exploring new concepts in sushi-making, like with pink rice paper (for their pink roll that supports the American Cancer Society club at Newbury Park High School), their commitment to emphasizing the freshness of fish remains. Take the salmon collar. The butchering of their fish is perfect, getting as much meat out of the fish as possible. The tuna they use is superb. Many sushi restaurants, especially chain restaurants, use a farm-raised tuna that's has a radioactive red color. Sushi Yusho's tuna is a perfect rosy color, and the taste is even better. Some other good dishes to try are the soba noodles, udon, and tempura. The restaurant is in a small Newbury Park plaza, right next to Baskin Robbins and the Newbury Park Public Library, but this hidden gem is a great place to chow down. Shout outs to Liz and everyone at Sushi Yusho!
We have been coming here regularly (at least once a month) for the past 8 years. Kenny and Steve, the two sushi chefs, who are also brothers, are funny guys who have between them over 100 years of sushi experience. The fish is fresh and they're always flexible to make a custom roll for you. Our personal favorites are the albacore and halibut. There are many, many rolls which are named after their customers along with a wall of photos with their many regulars.
The cooked menu also has some stellar items on there. The teriyaki beef is cooked to order with your choice of how it comes out (rare, medium rare, etc.) and their pork spare ribs are very flavorful. There are also items not on the menu so always ask to see if they have anything new.
The place can get busy at times, which makes service a bit slow. The food quality makes up for it though. If you're in the area, definitely check them out.
A family favorite, we've been coming here for years, my review is overdue. Authentic and the true sushi experience with friendly, wanna-get-to-know-you chefs. My favs: hamachi, salmon, salmon skin hand roll, Katie roll (vegetarian), unagi, albacaore.Tell Kenny and Steve-san hello!
I've had some extremely expensive/high-grade sushi, have had some particularly budget/not so great....
Sushi Yusho is high-grade sushi with generous cuts at a close to budget price. I had fatty salmon there that was the absolute best. The house roll is very good, but their true strength lies in the quality and portion of their meats which is what I particularly look for in a sushi place rather than fancy rolls (which they still do very nicely!). Mom likes the plum wine--tried it and it was better than most places. Event the green tea is a step above most places.
If Steve or Kenny (owner/chefs) recommends something/you're the omakase type, go with it. Even though I did not emphasize the rolls (even though they are very good), I always see a few regulars give some general request but always ask the chefs to be artistic/recommend something and they are always impressed.
An old-school, small sushi place.
I LOVEE the sushi chefs here. They are super friendly and funny. They always joke around with the customers who sit at the sushi bar. It is a small little sushi place in Newbury Park and the people who go there are loyal customers who have been going there since they first opened. It gets pretty crowded during dinner time and is super packed on the weekends. The price is decent but the food really fills you up. I always order the Aji sashimi and House roll. In my opinion, those are the best things on their menu. But all their specialty rolls are good too. This would be a cute place for like a first date or nice dinner with your bf/gf on movie date night.
