I don't write a lot of reviews (clearly) and I've been procrastinating about doing this one but no longer! I've been to my fair share of salons, and I travel a lot so I've had to make do with random salon visits when time permits. I no longer do that. I wait, and I wait, and I'll keep on waiting until Kerri has an opening to take care of my long and sad tresses.
I don't ever do anything funky with my color or cut, but Kerri has this way of turning my boring "I need a color and a cut" into locks that people from my clueless husband to colleagues saying "Wow, you're hair looks amazing!" I'm super sensitive to hair color products, but I've never once gotten that "burn" or sensitivity when I head to SOL. My hair doesn't dry out but instead looks fabulously rich and shiny for weeks on end. As for the cut, Kerri is far to the left of me on being hip and cool, but she always finds a way to update my bangs and cut so that I don't look like the lame 40 year old that I am.
Usually a color and cut runs about $150 for me, so this deal they have going on is perfect. It is worth every penny, especially the style with Kerri so please book right now. Well, actually, don't book right now since I'm trying to get in with Kerri so wait about an hour before you do it.
How To Get A Haircut
Directions:
1. Decide that you need a change, even if it's just finally getting rid of those split ends, or re-introducing The Fringe from 5 years ago.
2. Search Yelp! for The Best Salon Out There.
3. Make appointment.
4. Go to appointment, and sweat over your hair for 45 minutes.
5. Pay lots of dough.
6. Go home and cry.
7. Take a shower so you have wet hair and can ignore your new 'do.
Streets of London? They just changed all the rules. I've been to their salon three times (two more times than I've been to any other salon in Chicago), and I've never left there sad. I'd gone twice for haircuts (with Lisa, the owner) and once just for styling before a NYE party (can't remember her name, but I'll update this as soon as I do). You're guaranteed to leave looking better than you did walking in. Last haircut I got there was very subtle, just cleaning it up really, but it still looked better. I've had people butcher "just clean it up, please" before.
It might just be me, because I have long, very thick hair, but I don't think that's a valid excuse for all the other salons.
Also, I normally hate talking to hairstylists because I just go to zone out and clear my head, or flip through a magazine, or mentally organize my ToDo list. But Lisa is fun. And she somehow remembered who I was and some things we'd talked about from my first haircut, which was over a year before the second haircut. Lovely, talented person.
Worth the hour of public transportation it takes me to get out there. And these days they have a little savings card, like they're baristas of hair-magic, where you get your 5th haircut 50% off, and 10th one FREE! Amen.
Stacey is new on the floor...but she's a MAD GENIUS!
I've gotten so many compliments on my hair from random people, and a few of them were actually stylists themselves.
I was admiring my co-worker's hair and she told me about SOL. I checked out the salon on Yelp and saw that they had a 20% discount for first time clients. I called immediately and they got me in that week for a haircut and color with Catherine.
Everyone was really nice at SOL and appreciated Catherine's honesty when it came to my haircut and color. I have blonde hair (highlighted) and was thinking I'd go dark, but changed my mind last minute. Catherine told me I should do low lights first to see if it's something I'd like and could get used to before going dark. She used 3 different colors in my hair, a blonde, a golden and a low light. I love the color and I think it will definitely blend in when my roots start to come. It looks very natural!
And my haircut is fantastic! Such a stylish long-bob. I get some many compliments on it. I do wish I could get in a pony-tail, but give it a few weeks and I'll be able to tie it back.
Look forward to going back!
I have been going to the same hairstylist for almost 10 years. But, when you move out of state, this has to change. So I tried this place out because they were listed as best for reds in Chicago Magazine. The people there are super great, but I just don't think it's quite the salon for me. Not bad - just not my style, which is NOT reflective of the people in any way.
Pros:
Very nice people - tried to make me comfy with new stylist and suggested new restaurants for me to try since I was new to the area
Kerri is very talented. She was able to match my roots to my existing color exactly. And she really does geek out on reds :)
Very easy and free parking - easy to get to.
Cons (though these could be pros to some):
Very trendy/edgy salon. I personally felt very "uncool" in here. Nothing the staff did - they were all VERY welcoming. Just the vibe of the salon - I felt old and frumpy there.
I had to re-do my hair for the first time in a really long time when I got home. In all fairness, it probably had more to do with the fact that I am very untalented at explaining what I want/like.
They got me in and out in a big hurry it seemed. Nothing wrong with this - I understand that often in the city people are in a hurry. I get my hair done on my days off... it's a relaxation thing for me, not a "squeeze it in" thing. So again - my con could be someone else's pro.
Overall, for the right person this is a great salon. I definitely recommend it to those looking for a youthful, edgy vibe (I think I'm sending my neighbor here). Just wasn't the right "fit" for me.
