My friend told me about this place because they had pissed her off.
As the story goes, my friend stopped by one morning before work, on her way to the subway. She waited through a several-minutes-long line, and when it was her turn at the counter, she asked for a large cappuccino, to go.
The barista cheerfully informed her that there was no such thing as a large cappuccino.
My friend, ever the New Yorker, left in a huff without buying anything. It had annoyed her so badly that she vented the story to me while we were working out together. I feigned sympathy, but immediately pulled out the Yelp app and bookmarked the offending shop.
I finally got to visit this afternoon, a lovely, summery day in March (March!?). I ordered the cappuccino, bought my friend a cold brew coffee, and added on an almond-raspberry cookie for a treat.
It was all delightful. From the decor, to the chalkboard (which you're allowed to write on), to the smiling barista, to the fantastic Stumptown capp (appropriately sized!), everything about PORTS screams five stars. Do check it out when you venture into the no mans land of 23rd street.
High five
Walking around Chelsea after lunch and doing some shopping; popped in. . . coffee choices are a plenty and even some sweets to satisfy one's craving.
Ports even offers french press - what a refreshing option. If you're in the neighborhood (I was visiting for the weekend; 3/10/12); you have to try NYC coffee shops - they are far better than the chains. . . good experience.

This coffee shop belongs in Brooklyn.
I had a bit of time before yoga class, so I stopped in for a quick cup of coffee. Immediately when I stepped in, I knew I would like this place. Feist playing in the background with a cute and peaceful barista working the counter.
She was very pleasant with a wonderful soothing voice, just what I need before yoga class. I ordered up a small americano and also had a small vegan pastry made with currants and tamarind.
Just so you know, this place brews Stumptown coffee. Excellent coffee, high-quality and executed perfectly. The pastry is courtesy of Scratchbread in Brooklyn and every bite was heavenly with a slight spicy tangy kick.
The place is small, but can definitely fit at least 5 people. They have stools and counter space. Enough space for your laptop, Sunday times or a good novel.
Come in and try the coffee and linger a little while longer and find inner peace.
