My boyfriend and I went here for a late date night during their reverse happy hour.
The decor is nice, and it feels really intimate.
The staff is friendly and they keep tabs on you.
We ordered a cheese board which was delicious.
They served a hearty amount of cheese, crackers, fruit, and olives.
We also got an order of their garlic cheese fries (for free with a foursquare check in!).
The garlic cheese fries are potent, so consider yourself warned if you're not a big garlic fan.
The drinks really stole the show.
I had the Olvera Heist, and a Helen of Troy.
The Olvera Heist was strong, spicy, and addictive.
The Helen of Troy is dangerous (in a good way).
I really appreciate the handcrafted freshness and that they have Pimms.
My boyfriend had a K.G.B. and a Bunker Hill.
He enjoyed both, and commented on how smooth the Bunker Hill was.
I look forward to returning to this place to try more of their creations.

Came here for dinner and right when I entered the restaurant, I noticed that it was where The Must used to be. I really miss that place. The place looks almost the same but they now have nicer plush chairs.
The reservation was set for 9 people but they only gave us 8 place settings. Then they only gave us 8 waters. It was my friend's bday and when they brought out the cake, they only gave us 8 plates and 8 forks. We kept having to ask for 1 more of everything. I dont know why they kept thinkin there was only 8 of us, when clearly there was 9 of us at the table.
Other than that, the food was good. A few of us had the Spring St Smash and the drink was cute but I didn't care for the taste.
Spinach salad-comes with a bacon dressing but couldn't taste the bacon
Fried green tomatoes-skip. nothing worth noting.
Spicy garlic fries-didn't have as much garlic taste as I would've liked but it was still good.
Braised short ribs with truffle mashed potatoes-this was really good and the short rib was really moist
Mexican cheesesteak- this was the winner of the night. As other yelpers stated, It was delicious! Lots of flavor, juicy, and the star of the night.
I would come back just for the cheesesteak!
unexpected find.
i came in during happy hour... not because i wanted a drink but because i wanted to use the bathroom.
i felt bad because i couldn't just bounce after using their facilities so i ordered a drink and some food.
i had Helen of Troy and the coconut milk mussel appetizer.
and omg. i almost died from happiness. helen of troy is the typical perfect girl drink. fruity, slight hint of alcohol and refreshing. and coconut milk steamed mussels... need i say more?
i ended up ordering the bruschetta and another drink, Olvera Heist. both which were also great. the bruschetta bread was soft and crunchy at the same time. the Olvera Heist is a spicy tequila with grapefruit and lemon. It's a manly drink, which i don't usually like but... it was Ahhhmazing. so refreshing, spicy, unique and gives you a good buzz all in one.
thanks to my need for a quick bathroom break, i found a gold mine.

Yum. An old LA feel with a contemporary flavor.
The food:
Food is moderately priced ($6-20).Generally, The appetizers are well priced ($6-12) and encourage sharing. The Artichoke tapenade was delicious and so was the Mexican cheesesteak. The cheesesteak was just overflowing with cheesy savory goodness. Also, try the spicy garlic fries, and you won't regret it. The Ceviche was light and not too fishy.
The drinks.
I really like the way they divide their menu. The drinks are listed by their flavor profile (savory, sweet, etc). That really makes it much easier as to pick a drink. Also there are fun little quotes about alcohol attached to each page in the menu. If you like a sour drink go with the FIDM Cup which is light a flavorful and if you like a fresh fruity cocktails you might like the Helen of Troy.
the decor & service:
Onyx really pays an tribute to the history of old 1930's downtown La which is reflected in the menu and the wall coverings. The manager and staff was really friendly. We came on a relatively slow night and without us saying anything the manager came over and offered us some free samples of the food.
stray observations:
They had a good pen for signing our check with. Solid and sturdy real american
ingenuity.
Came for brunch and bottomless mimosas. OMG. Love brunch bec I love poached eggs. Got the Upstream, AMAZING!!!! and with bottomless mimosas, this place can't be beat for brunch in DTLA. Everyone is friendly, especially David, the owner, it's like an upscale cheers. Went for happy hour and was blown away with the raw bar. Had everything and was not disappointed. My faves were the scallops and garlic fries. Will keep coming. Great ambiance, staff, food and drinks.
