I've walked by this place a lot but decided to stop in today. I'm so glad i did! The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious. I got a chicken panini, which came out of the kitchen just a few minutes after I ordered it. All sandwiches come with chips and a drink so this is a great deal. I also tried their pumpkin bread which was very fresh
I took away one star because the noise of the train can get annoying after a while but overall, I thought it was very cozy and warm with great food and drinks!
I love this place. Convenient to the Sheridan red line stop, but more importantly, to my apartment (I live right around the corner). I'm unashamed to admit that I've spent many a Saturday waking up to baking soda & expired eggs in my fridge. The breakfast/coffee solution? Em City.
I judge a good coffee joint by it's plain black coffee. The Em City grind is delicious, as is. Cream and sugar are not necessary--just an added caloric bonus. To prove my point, do you know anyone who drinks black coffee from Starbucks? Probably not. It needs extra pumps of syrup and whipped cream just to make it potable. But I digress...
To be fair, I'm not a black coffee snob. I also thoroughly enjoy Em City's seasonal pumpkin latte, and when my Mom visited in October she swore by their peppermint mocha.
Special shout out to Jeff--my fellow Austin, TX transplant. I've yet to see this kid in a bad mood--which is always a nice pick-me-up after I've had a godawful day at work.
Also, don't miss out on the Southwest Chicken Panino. It's my favorite out of their rotating lunch/dinner specials. Sandwich, chips, and a drink (I recommend the Arnold Palmer) for ~$7. Can't beat it.
Overall, a very pleasant experience. I prefer plain black coffee, so I can't speak to the quality of any of their specialty beverages, but the coffee is always good.
I'm impressed with the quality of the food they provide. They have a relatively large menu for a coffee shop, and everything I've eaten here has always been fresh and tasty. They bring it out from the kitchen to your table, and all the employees I've interacted with have been really nice.
It is right under the Sheridan red line stop, but the train running over top never seems to bother me.
It could be a bit more...cozy? Still, that's a very small complaint.
Free wi-fi.

Just as a quick update to my last review, this place has stopped serving their delicious breakfast sandwiches. They now serve breakfast tacos, which I didn't enjoy, just not very good. They also have bagels and cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon roll was okay, not great. I very disappointed that they stopped with the food that kept me going back.

I was a bit harsh on Emerald City with my first review. Since then I have started to really like this little coffee shop. It's grown on me and earned itself another star.
I like that they ask if I want three shots or four shots of espresso in my latte. Some days are four shot days and some are not.
I also like their blueberry muffins and scones. They use real blueberries in them! The scones aren't dry like they are at other coffee shops and the muffins are topped with granola. Granola!! Love.
