Let me start w/saying...I have MAJOR anxiety about cutting my hair...even a trim makes me nervous. I also have HIGH expectations w/customer service and notice when something is not clean.
This salon is trendy w/their decor and clean. I loved the floors and how they added little bits to make it look like a garage and still a kick ass high end salon!
Felix was super friendly and helpful on the phone; he booked me w/Jessica for the same day and even helped me find parking when I had to call back...THANK YOU. *_^
Jessica is super knowledgeable! She knew exactly why my hair was as stressed as it is. We did some color (black peeking out of my naturally red hair...SO AWESOME), deep condition and a much needed trim. She educated me a lot on how to prevent such heat damage in the future and didn't try to over sell me on products. I did leave w/new shampoo and conditioner, and a booking for a trim w/some color in 8 weeks.
My cut is PERFECT, my color is amazing, my hair is silky soft and shinny, and I left w/education about MY hair that I did not know before. For those reasons I would come back to Jessica at Diesel Salon. But they exceeded my expectations. I was offered a beverage (coffee, tea, water, etc). Jessica went to my car to make sure I wouldn't be in violation to get a ticket due to the 2 hour only time on street parking. Then showed me where to park next time, just in case we ran over the allotted time. I noticed everyone in the salon helped each other and chatted nicely. They seem to be a big happy family at Diesel. No bad mouthing each other, other salons, different products then what they sell or their other clients. I never come back to a salon that does any of these things. Diesel Salon set the bar HIGH.
The only thing I would suggest but not dock a star for is a price list. Though, I could have missed it. But I did not notice a list or price on products. It is also not itemized on my receipt.
After all the great reviews I expected a lot better. I'm not sure if the stylist was just tired since I was her last client of the day or what.
I bought the yelp deal and I wanted highlights but the girl talked me into getting balayage highlights. I did this because I wanted more of my natural color to show. This is where she does it free hand with less streaks. I had about 8-10 lines and she only does it on the top. She never asked where I part my hair so I could only wear it that one way. And she still charged me the same as a half head of highlights. $80 When you check in, it says you get a gift and there were comments on what people were getting. I didn't get anything like the others. The front desk guy didn't even know if they had anything and I didn't get a cute bag or anything. He just handed me a sample packet or something useless that was behind the desk.
They come off to be high end but don't treat you like it.
Ever since the Ombre hair trend gained popularity last summer, I have been wanting to jump on the bandwagon. I do not normally spend so much on my hair (I'd rather spend it on clothes/makeup), but I am too afraid to try any 'DIY at home versions.' I purchased the YELP deal, but still ended up paying paying $100 (not including tip) to get my ombre hair. It's the most I have ever paid to get my hair done, but the price seems to be equivalent to other salons (or so I think!)
I called around 12:45 on a Friday just to check if they had any openings for that day and Felix ended up setting me with an appointment that day at 1:15PM! Ly Yen worked on my hair and I loved her. She spoke with me before actually coloring my hair and really made sure that she knew what I wanted. It also helped that she had actually ombre-d one of the other stylists working that afternoon, so I was actually able to see her work in person.
I couldn't be happier with my hair! I wanted it to be noticeable, but still natural and she really nailed it. I have received tons of compliments on it. Ly Yen did tell me that I would have to go back to the salon a few more times to get my hair to the exact shade I want (slightly more bleached out), but I don't think I can spend $170 three more times.
Without giving a lecture on the history of hair stylists I've gone through, I'll just say that Manny is probably the best stylist I've had in all of San Diego. I was barely awake for my appointment and mumbled some incoherent words at him. Then magic happened. He whipped up my overgrown, thick, course Asian hair into something amazing, sleek, and professional-looking in half the time other stylists spend slaving over my hair. Wow.
As for price, I was quoted $60 (of course covered by the Yelp deal), which is reasonable for a great cut and half what I paid for some inferior cuts. It's worth that much just to know that I can roll out of bed, tug on my hair a bit, and walk into the office without anyone knowing my morning hair routine (or lack thereof).
