tl;dr
Nice date place in East Harlem with great Cuban food and (albeit a bit expensive) mojitos.
---
Came here awhile ago - but keep forgetting to write the review.
This is a neat little place tucked into East Harlem - the decor inside is VERY different from the various discount stores that surround the restaurant :)
It's really a date restaurant - the prevalent theme of the restaurant is small square tables lit by candles :)
I recommend making a reservation, as they seem to have a pretty firm reservation policy and when we walked in (party of 4) without a reservation (on a weekday to boot!), they seated us in this really strange table all the way in the back (not in the main dining room) for "people without a reservation."
But whatever -
We started with a round of fruity mojitos, and my mango was meh. The guava one is good though! I got the ropa vieja as my main dish, and it's EXCELLENT. The ropa vieja comes in a deep-fried plantain bowl, and so you get to eat that at the end too :) I just wish they had more rice. Mmm so tasty.
My friends opted for the steak and the grilled chicken with pesto, and I thought it was alright - the ropa vieja definitely trumped all of the dishes with its flavorfulness (the pesto with the chicken was actually pretty good too).
What made me really want to write this review, however, was that we actually found a small staple (the variety that goes into a common office stapler) inside of the pesto and we told our waitress out of principle more than anything else - we were having a good time at that point so we didn't really make that big of a deal out of it.
However, the manager appeared at our table within MOMENTS, apologizing profusely. He offered to make us another dish, but we were pretty much done at that point and so we were like, oh, it's alright. However, he insisted on treating us to at least something, so he's like, how about another round of mojitos? Of course, we never say no to free alcohol...so :)
Within exactly the span of time it takes to make 4 mojitos, he reappeared at our table with 4 tall glasses of icy goodness. We thanked him, tasted some, and realized that he had made them double-strength (with a strong dose of mint to balance out). Needless to say, we were all pretty happy after the second round.
He apologized again when we paid for dinner, and even took a percentage off of our total. What excellent customer service! I am VERY impressed by this manager and I want to commend him, especially comparing against many restauranteurs in NYC who treat customers as if we're not paying for the food we're eating.
The major downside to Amor Cubano is that their menu is kind of pricey (already for generally Manhattan standards, much less to say East Harlem!). However, we used a Yelp 20-for-40 deal (there was a Groupon that day too) and it worked out fine :)
Looking forward to coming back! A solid 3.5, with another star for the excellent customer service.
Love this little Cuban joint up in el Barrio. Ver nice vibe - relaxing and romantic. Super friendly and attentive staff in exotic skirts. Music almost always too loud but no one seems to care. They have live music several nights a week.
The service is excellent. Once we requested a hot sauce, the kitchen specially whipped something up like a miracle and we were very happy with the rich taste and the spiciness it delivered.
The quality of food is excellent in everything we ordered from our past visits: paellas, plantains maduro, chill rellenos, and papas. The drinks are uber delicious: ginger mojitos, mojitos, sangria rojas.
The pros:
service. friendly & attentive wait staff. drinks. paella. plantain maduros. chile rellenos.
The cons:
music too loud. The price tag without groupon deals can cost an arm.
Let me preface this review by mentioning that I have had some of the most delicious Cuban food in both Miami and the Florida Keys so it takes a lot impress my palate. Came here after buying a groupon for the place.
My husband ordered the palomilla steak and said that it tasted like it hadn't been marinated enough. I ordered the enchilados camarones - a shrimp dish that came in a tomato-based sauce. Mine was just ok. The highlight of the meal was definitely the $5 mojito and the side order of yuca frita. The band was good but a little too loud for such a small place.
Will try some other Cuban restaurants before returning.
I bought a groupon for this place. It may be a different experience for those who don't buy groupons (but from the reviews and the perennially feature most people are grouponing it). My first attempt to eat here was a failure. We hadn't had reservations and they informed us that we'd be waiting for an hour. My second attempt was a success.
The location of the restaurant is E 110th Street and Third Avenue. It's a block from the projects. on a wide, one-way semi desolate boulevard. That said, most New Yorkers will be fine with it. Once you enter the restaurant, you feel transported to another place. The atmosphere is festive and there is often a band playing. The drinks are very good, especially the mojitos. The food is very good as well. The staff was very friendly. There isn't much authentic Cuban cuisine in Manhattan relative to other hispanic groups but this place is a bright spot.
There are some detractions. The restaurant is loud even without the band. It is a bit expensive, especially without a groupon. To fully enjoy the experience, you'll likely exceed your $20 dollar credit from groupon. With a groupon (or some other deal), the restaurant applies a 20% tip amount and they tax you on the pre-discounted total.
Friendly staff, live music, and good food is the best way to describe this little Cuban bar in East Harlem. The atmosphere was very welcoming and it felt like I was right in someone's home. The music was a little bit loud at the front of the restaurant but I was still able to hold a conversation. The Ropa Vieja was very delicious and lasted that night and into the next day as I ate it for leftovers.
