Review from Lacey H.
If you ever have the chance to attend a Zuppa performance, I implore you to carpe diem and get your buns to wherever they happen to be selling tickets.
In my books, this theatre troupe is the best in the city. Creativity, whimsy and choreography abound in their productions, not to mention sensational music, well-crafted lighting and dynamic harmonies.
The main players are Sue Leblanc-Crawford, Ben Stone and Stewart Legere, with Alex McLean as director. This tightly knit ensemble have harnessed their on-stage chemistry, creating a roller coaster theatre ride ripe with sharp turns, stretches of anticipation, plunges into great depths, along with moments of extreme jubilation.
Poor Boy, floating loosely behind on Orpheus' coat strings, is a tale of love and fame. While Penny Dreadful skips the niceties, unraveling a yarn about the poor and the rich, life and death.
Keep your eyes peeled for adverts proclaiming the next performances. Zuppa will charm you, they will captivate you and they will take you on a slippery ride, where life and death can seem but mirroring images.
Specialties
Zuppa Theatre Co.'s newest concoction is Slowly I Turn: a parlor vaudeville in one act. Conceived by Zuppa founder and principle actor Ben Stone, the show is a about a father and son fullfilling a long-time dream of performing together...by putting on a play in their living room. Starring Ben Stone and his real-life father John (a much loved Halifax school teacher), Slowly I Turn is a love letter to family and theatre, inspired by American Vaudeville, Hamlet and the Muppet Show.
Slowly I Turn runs March 13 to 31, 2012. Limited 20 seats per performance. Purchase tickets now at slowlyiturn.eventbrite.com or call to reserve at (902) 489-9872.
History
Established in 1998
Zuppa Theatre Co. is an ensemble theatre company driven by a core group of artists developing original performances in collaboration with like-minded individuals from related disciplines. Every Zuppa show is a ride through wild visions, genres, familiar stories and the unknown; the experiences, thoughts and inclinations of the lead artists determine the landscape. At the heart of each show is the restless spirit of the actor.
Zuppa has toured as close to home as Mosers River and as far afield as Cardiff, Wales; Boston, and Vancouver. Most recently, the group has presented shows at Magnetic North Theatre Festival in Ottawa and The New Groundswell Festival in Toronto.
