Canmore means 'Big Head' but nothing about Zona's is pretentious. A trip to this wonderful mountain town isn't complete without dinner at Zona's whose menu is everchanging and a delight to order from.
How does vegetable mango curry strudel, coconut lime chicken lasagna, pomegranate chicken, mo'riocking molasses lamb curry or black-currant & bourbon glazed ribs sound? *passes you a napkin to mop up your drool* That's what I thought too.
I always remember everything I have tried here. I've had the coconut chicken lasagna twice. Mmmmm. I've had a Copper Door salmon (whiskey/maple syrup/soy based sauce). Mmmmyum. Years ago I even had a Guinness cheese soup and I don't drink beer. But MMMMYAYUM!
Recent reno's yielded a great patio and interior decor is strange but comfy, with a few formal touches but a distinctly rustic tropical feel combining lots of light wood and tented ceilings. Strange but welcoming. Staff are attentive & friendly just as you'd expect.
They have a great drinks menu (chocolate raspberry martini) and they make a great Caesar. The last time I was there we shared the paprika calamari which, though nicely fried, needed more spice & salt. Stick around on the weekend eves because I've heard they have a late night disco party. I KNOW?!!! This place is a bit of a conundrum but honestly, you'll never forget it. -

I've dined at Zona's a dozen of times over the past 6 or 7 years. My first couple of experiences were quite excellent and I used to consider it one of my favorite restaurants in Canmore, but they they renovated the building, completely destroying the charm it did have, and replacing it with this lame yellow-laquer log style that you see in cabins and "woodsy" restaurants and pubs.
The food is also very inconsistent. Had some great dishes here, and some absolutely terrible ones. During our last visit we ordered the meatball appetizer, which came out with cold centers. BLECH. obviously the food isn't being freshly prepared, they're just heating up frozen meatballs and they can't even do that right. I mentioned it to the waitress and she just said "sorry" without comping the dish.
Won't be going back again, Canmore's dining scene is WAY too good to continue wasting our time and money at Zona's. -

Hey Zona's you are kooky delicious!
The food wins out over anything else at Zona's. A short list of really great dishes. If you are in Canmore, try not to hit the main drag and go to Zona's instead. It feels like a bit of a secret treasure.
Having said that, everything other than the food is an odd, eclectic mix of randomness. Apparently, there are late night dance parties here. Cool idea, but with food so good, why alienate customers that are looking to sit back and enjoy their meal for hours? Also, Zona's menu doesn't really cater to a late night crowd. It's good, but it's pricey. Much like a teenage girl, Zona's is sending out some mixed messages.
The decor seems to be a mix of everything jumbled together and the white and red checked tablecloths ruin a huge part of the ambiance. They also take away from the beautiful pottery that most of the food is served in (which is apparently made by the owners).
Zona's, your food is to die for. On everything else, you need to pick a direction and stick with it, otherwise, I fear you won't be around for too much longer. -

Great way to escape the tourist mess of Banff...and it's only a short drive away!
Zona's had an extensive drink selection, an innovative menu, and super friendly staff. During our dinner, we saw why they claim to be a favorite to the locals...the manager/owner came out to chat with all the tables and greeted many patrons by their first names.
Highlights of the evening included the Moroccan Curry, the Vegetable Strudel, Adriann's Ribs, and the Bailey's hot chocolate they so graciously made for us shivering tourists (dude, it was cold in JULY).
They also had the largest "pint" of beer (mmm Hoegaarden) I have ever seen--it was seriously the size of my face!
Must have something to do the metric system, eh?
