I like you if you make my-someone-special smile and sweat :)

Sweat - One of Zocalo's sustainability initiatives must be energy reduction because we were sweating like piggies in a roaster. The dinner we had on this hot summer's night turned up another notch with dishes we ordered from the chili infused modern Mexican menu. Although the flavours were subtle, the dishes were thought out and presented well.

Smile - There is nothing better to tone down the heat than with something sweet like Zocalo's special honey iced tea or their amazing plantains. The waiter was impressively attentive, even on this bustling hot night, and took note that we were guzzling down our water like cows in a desert. He even remember to surprise us with a free dessert for our birthday occasion.: the tres leches (sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk) was the perfect ending to a sweaty, delicious night.

Nothing brings out the spice of the night like their offerings of tequila tastings and live music every other Wednesday. They are vegetarian friendly and even have Corona specials for $3 during happy hour every Tuesday.

This place is definitely better in quality than Las Margaritas.  One of my dinner companions and I shared a pitcher of mango mojito, and it was great!

    What we ordered:
Mango Mojito pitcher, Tortilla chips with pico de gallo & guacamole, pork (puerco) en adobo sauce, ceviche, black bean tacos, coco flan, pastel tres leches.

    Pros:
    -Contemporary mexican cuisine
    -Trendy, but not snobby
    -Good quality ingredients
    -Perfect mojitos
-I think it's mostly proper Mexican, rather than Tex Mex, which you can find everywhere else
-The flan was nice texture and the burned sugar candy on top was a nice touch
-Food arrived hot (except ceviche, which is inherently cold)

    Cons:
-No salt in the pico de gallo and the pork in adobo would have been a bit better with salt
-The black bean tacos were just refried black bean in a soft corn tortilla with an accompanying small salad... where was the flavour component?
-Guacamole seems like it was blended with sour cream or something
-Not enough tortilla chips in the order
-Pastel tres leches was too dense in the cake part to have that identity.
-Desserts could have been more creative
-Waitress didn't even tell me the daily specials, or at the very least soup of the day
-Bill took forever to arrive whilst the servers were making some small talk amongst themselves

All in all, I might go back. But I think I'm still in search of better Mexican food. Actually, while this place has way better quality than Las Margaritas, I'd probably be more prone to going back to LM since they have a better bang for your buck, their margaritas are blended, and salt content and flavour is decent.

One major thing I just started to wonder... why doesn't Zocalo have anything spicy on their menu? Mexican food is famous for being spicy (i.e. jalapenos, serranos, chipotle...)  Their "spicy" guacamole wasn't spicy at all. I'd like to have the options of having more chiles or a hotter salsa or something.....

Beans and rice are both vegetarian here, so added bonus for vegetarians. An order of chips, guac and salsa is a hefty $8 considering you get about 1/2 cup of salsa! Service is friendly and not too overbearing.

The best flan I have ever had!!! It's not surprising that it sells out a lot. Seriously, words cannot describe how good it is, you just have to go there and try it, trust me! And oh ya, the other food is pretty good as well, specifically the plantains, sweet and buttery mm, mm, mm and the chicken taquitos. The also have an impressive list of Tequila. Zocalo is one of the many reasons why I love living in the soma area.

Zocalo offers up really tasty contemporary Mexican cuisine - think a more sophisticated version of your standard burrito stand.  Much of what's on the menu is spiced really nicely and presented in a kind of tapas format.  But, what might be even more worthwhile than the food is the Friday night salsa dancing.  They provide live music and a miniscule dance floor that quickly fills up with all levels of salsa dancers.  All in all this is a great choice of a night out in Vancouver.
