Review from Quan H.
When I'm in the area and craving for interesting sushi, I'd go there for a meal.
My friend took me here and I remembered ordering natto roll and okonomiyaki... and other stuff. I believe I was in the mood for okonomiyaki (thanks, Lunch no Jyoou) and we haven't found any places that make any at the time. (Try Clubhouse Restaurant!)
We went at around 6:30pm. It was a nice ambiance... for a date (candlelight)! Which made it kinda awkward for my friend and I, but eh, food was good. I was impressed by the presentations of the dishes. Now I wished I had taken photos. They had fried potato sticks sticking up, making towers and the like.
seafood okonomiyaki: smaller portion than I hoped, and kind of mushy.
natto roll: tasted exactly like I'd expect it. If you don't like natto, don't order it.
nasu dengaku (deep fried eggplant glazed w/ sweet miso sauce): sooooooooo good. It was already slit so you can just easily spoon the contents out. Heaven by the mouthful. Oh, I have a picture of this one (:
i forget what else we ordered. We got to talk to one of the chefs there. He's Japanese. Something pleasant about knowing that your Japanese food is made by a Japanese person, right? ;) -

My mom wanted to try out Zipang sushi because they had sockeye salmon nigiri, and sockeye salmon is kind of a Vancouver thing.
The sockeye salmon itself is firmer and less fatty than the usual salmon nigiri we get in California. An interesting try!
The nigiri items I had were decent, the agedashi tofu good, but the tako yaki was soggy. All in all, the food was was pretty okay, but nothing amazing. If you are in Vancouver for a limited time, I would say you can skip this spot.Listed in: Vancouver Eats

If I was writing this review solely on the sushi, I probably would have given 3 stars, but some of the other menu items brought it down. I'll start with the good - spicy agedashi tofu. Ok, that's out of the way. We ordered the 'ocean' roll, which comes with several types of seafood in 4 giant rolls for $10. If you put these into normal sized rolls, you'd probably have an average sized amount of sushi, and the ingredients weren't anything special, so in my opinion about $3-4 more than it should have been.
On top of that we ordered pork okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza on their menu), which I love, but is difficult to find, and scallop takoyaki, which I also love and is becoming increasingly easier to find around town. The okonomiyaki was much too thick and bready and had a few tiny slivers of pork in it. So little, we initially thought they forgot to add it. Quite disappointing.
The takoyaki looked good when they arrived, but the batter was completely uncooked on the inside which was disgusting - I couldn't even finish mine. On top of that, there was almost NO scallop, leaving us with what was essentially an uncooked, gloopy dough ball with mayo, tonkatsu sauce and bonito flakes. I've seriously had better takoyaki in the food court at Aberdeen Centre.
On top of this, the interior is terrible - everything is mismatched, but not in a good way, and kind of dirty. The servers were good - friendly and knowledgeable, but I still probably won't go back. -

ZiPang is also a Japanese TV series from a few years ago (from wiki)... Small room and full with a wait (note to self good sign)... the sushi bar was open so we took it. Friendly and nice staff, but new as they all needed direction from the head chef, which cause some minor issues with our order but nothing to yelp about. Our sushi was good size, fresh and nice display.. (I guess it has to be fresh or what?) side orders of baked eggplant and green sushi salad hit and spicy agedashi the spot.. 5 dishs on small glass of sake $60 for two.. a little high I feel, but I guess they need to pay for the TV series..

I come to place quite frequently. The service is wonderful here. Servers and chefs are Japanese, know their menus well, are inviting and kind.
Their ebi sunimono is a great appetizer to start - not too sour or sweet, and has tons of shrimp in it.
Love the way they present their sushi. Sockeye salmon, scallop, tuna, saba do not disappoint. Their spider roll and kaki fry are scrumptious. Takoyaki tastes decent - and can get a bit soggy, so eat them quickly!
They have a long menu so take a look thoroughly. -

I have received terrible service from this restaurant. I ordered take out, and the lady that was handing out my food, told me to pay first, and wait a little bit. I said fine, even though I had already waited 30 mins, in which she initially told me it would take 10 mins. So I stood there, then after waiting 40 mins, she hands me my takeout order, and when I was about to pick it up from the counter, another lady (probably the boss as she was a complete *itch), pulled my hand away from the bag, and yelled, " NO, ITS NOT YOURS, DONT TOUCH!!". I was appalled and I felt very embarrassed. I was very upset by the incident, and I called the restaurant after a few hours, to ask to speak to the manager. I told him the incident, and he just said, "Oh I was there". Then I was like, "If you are the manager, you should definitely teach your staff some manners." He was like, "Okay,....sorry". I felt that he was very reluctant to apologize to me and that he did not think his staff did any wrong. In terms of the food- takoyaki balls were alright, sushi-the rice was too mushy, and they forgot to put in wasabi in the box. All in all, will not return, DO NOT RECOMMEND. HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!!!

Zipang is my staple sushi restaurant in Vancouver; I can be found here too frequently for Sunday lunch. I just came with a large group out of town guest and they were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the sushi and the affordability.
I always get the wild Sockeye Salmon sashimi, and when the weather allows the takoyaki. Their rolls are quite decent as well -- in general you can't go wrong here. -

I think I'm in love. With so many sushi joints and more spring up every day, Zipang definitely stands out from the crowd. The menu was very different than most. There is takoyaki and Japanese pizzas among other interesting things.
We ordered way too much food, but there was so much to try! The sushi came out all together on a plate with a candle on it. Interesting presentation. The spicy tuna was actually spicy. The chopped scallop was very fresh and not overpowered with mayo. We also ordered one of their special rolls which had a slice of peach on top - probably my fav for the night. We also tried their panko fry assorted platter with oysters, shrimp and croquette of potato and corn. The oysters were amazing and very well fried. The shrimp was very fresh and with a slight bite when you bit into it. The croquette, was just average though.
We also tried their sashimi and boy was it fresh. It was so red. A nice change from the other sushi joints. By the time our unagi don arrived, we were so stuffed and barely touched it. It made a great lunch the next day though.
Its difficult to explain the atmosphere of the restaurant. Its part modern, part hipster, part geek based on the furniture and is completely in line with the part of Vancouver its in. Regardless, Zipang is now probably one of my fav sushi places in Van. Can't wait to go back for more.

A nice little sushi cafe on Main street. I first tried the Jewel Box, a chef recommendation. A mixture of sashimi and rice, just like the chirashi don. This dish has instructions on how it needs to be eaten. Quite interesting, something I would definitely try again. If you like sashimi and particularly Uni (Sea Urchin), try the Jewel Box.
I also ordered the Kiwi Fruits of Caribbean roll. A vegetarian roll made of Fresh kiwi fruit, cucumber, avocado, carrot, asparagus, cornflakes, and lemon. I've never had a roll with Kiwi in it, and this one was really good!
Overall great atmosphere, great service, good variety in the menu, and fresh food.Listed in: Sushi Sensation

I usually go to sushiyama on broadway but sunday night is closed....so I drove up main street and found this place. Nice little spot with a good atmosphere. Green tea was great as was the miso....I always get both so often judge a place on them. Ordered agadashi tofu which came quick and was delicious...then waited for our 4 rolls,Alaska, Eel, Yam and Dynamite....and waited....and waited.....and waited.....and then after waiting some more it finally came. Nice presentation, all sushi on one big plate. It was definitely worth the wait. I'd go back for sure :)

I just got zipanged, and i don't even know what that means but i think it means truly satisfied by delicious fresh japanese yumminess.
Yet another place i have been wanting to try and finally have gotten too. The appetizer eggplant is to die for. The spicy agedeshi tofu was a little minimal for my taste but still good. The Caribbean role with kiwi fruit and corn flakes (and other veggies) was perfect. Service was great. The atmosphere was cute. I will be going back to try the Japanese pancake and re eating the eggplant and more rolls! yah! -

So the place is small and packed. It was a Sunday at about 6PM. We waited in the 3x3 doorway as people pushed through with their reservations...no one came by to check on us for 15mins or so. Finally a table opened up and we sat down...it stayed dirty for about another 10mins....then still nothing...we had to ask for them to bring menus and then again to take our drink order and the waitress (one of two) was like "oh, ok". How do Vancouver servers get away with being so flakey? The sushi was okay but not worth the wait. The highlight was that they served beer in cold glasses...sad really.

Review from Evilyn T.
We came here on Saturday night for our pre-work dinner. We usually get sushi on Saturdays because its a good base for a heavy night of drinking. Since our regular haunt is usually closed on long weekends, we made a reservation at Zipang Sushi.
I had been here once before and remembered the presentation of the sushi was beautiful, so I was excited to see it again. This time I was a little put off because I ordered three veggie rolls, oshinko, veggie, and a plum roll, and they put them on a giant plate with my friend's fish rolls. I thought that was a little presumptuous, since if I was a vege-terrorist, I may be put off having my rolls sharing the same plate as meaty rolls. Luckily for them, I don't really give a shit, but this is something that may bother other vegetarians. The rolls were all okay, I hoped the veggie roll would have been a bit bigger, but it was the same size as the oshinko roll, and the plum roll was a bit too tart for me.
I also ordered an eggplant appetizer, which was really good, it was probably the highlight of my meal. I wanted to try something different , and I certainly did. It was basically a baked half-eggplant with a sweet miso sauce on top, so it was king of an eggplant version of candied yams if you will. And it was super yum! It was almost too sweet, but after eating half of it, I was getting really full. If you love eggplant, you should try out this dish.
Overall, I might go back, but I certainly wouldn't wait in line like some of the other people there were, I don't think the sushi rolls are big enough, or that amazing, that I would give up 15 minutes of my life to wait to get in, however if I am in the area and I'm hungry, chances are I'll make the stop.Listed in: Sushies!

Review from Jessie J.
A dear friend with whom I have been sharing food almost since birth (our moms met at the age of 4 - they fed us sticky rice as one of our first solid foods together, we still regularly meet for dim sum) thinks Zipang has the best sushi in town. Given our often similar tastes, I made sure I'd given it a fair chance before reaching any conclusions.
Do I think this is the best sushi in town? No. But I do think it does some things very well. (I'm actually feeling quite ambivalent about my star rating. I wish I could give it a 3.5.)
What's good - The sockeye salmon sashimi is quite simply the best I've ever had. That could in part be due to the record sockeye run this year, but it's still better than any I've had elsewhere this summer. So definitely a must-order.
Their maki are also nicely priced for the most part, with only a few uber-fancy rolls getting into the $6-10 range. My beloved negitoro was $2.50 I think, and there are lots of interesting rolls for $3-5 dollars.
Finally, on the plus side, they have a roll with mackerel (saba). Saba is SO underused in Vancouver sushi, it makes me cry. So, for me at least, the saba-bien roll is definitely another must-order.
What's not so good: Both times I've eaten here I've found that the rice was underseasoned. This is something I'm pretty picky about, so it's definitely a point against. That, and I find their rolls quite hastily assembled. While of course it's nice to get your sushi promptly, I'd rather wait an extra minute or two for a roll that is round rather than squashed, with evenly distributed rice rather than a few randomly distributed grains.
Conclusion - I would certainly never veto Zipang as a sushi option if someone suggested it, and if I needed sushi on Main I would head there for sure, but unless I had a mad sockeye sashimi craving (not that likely - I'm a tuna girl), I doubt I would ever seek it out intentionally. -
Review from Dani B.
I used to live across the street from this place and I ordered take out here a couple times. I wasn't that impressed with the quality and the moderate to high prices for some of the items didn't sit well with me either.
The few times I went to pick up, the service ignored me for a while, but I guess because they assumed I wouldn't tip them. The ambiance is quite cute though, so if you want to give it a try, take a date or a friend for an intimate setting in a small, dimly lit place. -

Delightful. Japanese owned sushi cafe, my new favorite go-to sushi joint. I've now been there twice (after I went the first time, I went again the following evening!), and tried going a 3rd time for a late lunch (3pm) on Sunday, but it was closed.
Beautiful presentation, extensive menu, vibrant interior, friendly service. ANd reservations! some booths available, i'd recommend requesting these.
They serve wild sockeye as their 'standard' salmon, and their takoyaki and tempura are impeccable. They also have a nice spicy agedashi tofu, which is a unique twist.
All of their rolls are quite good - but their affordable and super fresh sashimi is the real scene-stealer! You can get a decent cali/tuna/veggie roll anywhere, but really, the mark of a fine sushi resto is their sashimi, and here, Zipang shines in terms of quality and value.
Go go go, but don't make it so busy that I can't get a table too. :) -
Review from Daph L.
Since I currently reside in a city where there is a dearth of reasonable but still good sushi places, I try and eat as much quality sushi as I can when I am in Vancouver. One of my go-to joints is Zipang. It's very much a neighbourhood place and actually Japanese owned and run. I appreciate that they do both westernized Japanese food and some Japanese street eats just as well. I first came here a few years ago when I saw this place and got so tired waiting for tables at Toshi.
I usually order a good amount of salmon sashimi (oh, Vancouverites, you don't know how lucky you are!!) and a selection of rolls. I've had almost everything on the menu including the pasta (inventive but if you have the chance, Basta Pasta NYC is tops in Japanese fusion pasta), okonomiyaki, kitchen specials, conventional rolls, specialty rolls and their lunch boxes which are a good price and pretty quick to the table. Sadly, they have gotten rid of a lot of their kitchen specials written on the chalkboard- those were good too.
Just be clear about your order. I once ordered one order of takoyaki and somehow the waitress didn't understand anything I said and repeated what I thought was "full order". (It didn't make much sense cause who would want a half order of the stuff- it's magic!) so I said yes, I would like that. I wondered why she sounded so surprised until the first 6 takoyaki came out (oh SO yum! I love the bonito flakes waving in the wind) and she said "your other orders are coming"... apparently she had heard "four orders" and it was not possible to stop the kitchen from cooking them. My MIL was a happy recipient of some slightly warm takoyaki at the end of our dinner. Anyways, I don't think that waitress works there anymore and their sushi is still pretty great.
It gets pretty busy on weekend evenings but generally tables are easy to get on weekdays and at lunch. Take note of their hours of business because they don't open a minute before their signage (actually a few minutes after) and will just stare at you from the inside even if your friend is standing outside waiting for you cause you have problems being on time no matter what time zone you are in. Sorry Michelle!
The price is right (about 30 dollars for 2), the food is good and the company was sweet. Recommended if you're in the neighbourhood or not too far away. -

I can be quite the little sushi snob, and I am happy to say that I have a new place to add to my short list of sushi options!
Zipang is a wee little cafe with fun art on the walls and a really friendly Japanese staff. I popped in for lunch today and ordered some of my favourites: negitoro roll, spicy scallop and salmon nigiri.
The fish was fresh, the rice perfectly cooked and the salmon was wild (yay!) The menu does have a lot of wacky rolls on offer, but they also have a great selections of authentic items - I can't wait to come back and try the okonomiyaki!
My only complaint? The wasabi was not at all pungent - I found myself adding more and more and all I could taste was the soy sauce.
All in all a good job - I will be back to try more! :)Listed in: Vancouver Sushi Hits and…

I've been here two or three times now and each time I thought the food was decent, but nothing too spectacular. I think the prices are too high, but for those around the area, maybe it isn't.
The atmosphere is kind of funky though - the chairs are all very unique. From what I remember, each table/person had a different chair. I assume it's Japanese run - but with a big of western flare.
The food is kind of salty (mainly their cooked food). Their unagi don was quite delicious. I tried their caterpillar roll and although it tasted good, it was definitely over priced. The rolls aren't big, but they're designed very nicely on the plate - very fancy arrangement!
The first time I went I had to wait in line for roughly 15 minutes. The other times I got seated right away. This place is not big - so big groups are definitely not recommended. -

We went here for lunch today.
It was great! The sushi was fresh and rolls unique.
Prices are reasonable and comparable to Toshi's down the street.
I recommend the sweet miso eggplant, it is a nice big globe eggplant that is perfectly baked to be juicy and delicious.
I would stay away from the mackerel as seemed old and more fishy than should be. -
Review from Rick C.
Zipang is a solid sushi place. Nothing blew my mind but I liked their selection of rolls and even their own concoctions.
The prices are reasonable and I left full on a less than $20 bill. Their Main Street location is on the small side but it's a nice, intimate atmosphere and their rolls were good-sized and proportioned.
The chop scallop and spicy tuna rolls were good. Their Japanese pancake dish was tasty and filling too. They had a good, solid selection and the service staff was attentive and responsive. The waitress even ran after us when my friend left her sunglasses on the table. -

Mmm...lively Japanese appetizer house that was packed from the moment I got in to the moment I left!
I ordered five things (listed in order of appearance):
Sashimi Salad: Green salad with salmon, tuna, and octopus sashimi on top. They are generous with the sashimi. Yummy!
Squid and Shiso Maki: Went together pretty well. Yummy!
Takoyaki: The main reason I came to this place, as you have no idea how hard it is to get made-from-scratch takoyaki in North America (or maybe you do!) But it's good here. Cooked perfectly, they're more than generous with the aonori, and there are reports of the word 'takoyaki' or 'zipang' written in mayonnaise on the dish. Yummy!
Fried platter: Two shrimp, two oysters, and a homemade croquette, all in panko batter and deep fried. This was the only dish that wasn't stellar, as the croquette and oysters were a tad overcooked and the shrimp were a tad undercooked. Still they weren't bad. The croquette was homemade (another rarity) and the oysters were HUGE!
Black sesame ice cream: This wasn't just ice cream with pieces of sesame, it was black ice cream! I think they finely ground up black sesame to make this and sprinkled ground white sesame on top. And it was so good. They also have matcha ice cream which I have heard is as green as this was black, but I rarely see sesame so I ordered this. Anyway, yummy!
Service was fairly quick considering how busy they were. The first dish took awhile (but they brought me a magazine to look at while I waited -- how nice) but the rest of them arrived in succession.
All of this for under $30. I wish I lived in Vancouver, because I would go back here every week and bring lots of people! :-) -

Very good, fresh-tasting food. Excellent service, lovely presentation. Most importantly to me: good value. If you're on a budget, do pay attention - you can rack up a large bill fairly quickly with all the tempting items. Start small - if you're still hungry, you can order more. Don't try everything on the menu in one visit - come back a few times. We routinely eat for under $28 incl. tip for the two of us, which I believe is quite reasonable for this quality of food.
I have sometimes found their hours to be unpredictable - I know they were closed for renos for awhile, but sometimes we show up at dinner time and it is closed for no reason that we can determine. -

Loved it here! The spinach gomae was Perfect...light, tasty, creamy, cool. The edamame were just right, not to hot or salty. These were some of the best California rolls I've had, and the Spicy Cactus roll was really good, too. All the sushi and sashimi had a fresh, clean taste, and did not leave any of us feeling funny afterward.
The presentation is fabulous, and I really felt like I was getting my money's worth. The decor is so cute and modern. A great spot! -

April 9, 2011. Update. So after my awesome experience last month I brought a friend here for her birthday. The service was average. Once we got seated it was fine, but beforehand (10 minutes or so) we stood there at the door completely ignored by all three wait staff. There were no tables free, so we couldn't sit, but the staff didn't even acknowledge us. When we walked to the back to speak to the server at the back, we were still ignored even though the wait staff had to walk around us to gain access to the Kitchen. It was quite awkward. I then asked one of the servers how long the wait was and was directed to another server who said about five minutes. And so we went and waited back by the door. We got seated fine, and then it was good. Though they didn't have some things on the menu due to seasonal vegetable availability. The food was good though and the price also reasonable. Will reconsider coming back here again due to the poor service.
March 10 2011. Based on other reviews a GF and I decided to check it out. There was a wait of about ten minutes but that was probably just because it was a prime time on a Friday night. The service was good and speedy but certainly not rushed to get you pushed out the door again. The roasted eggplant appie was gorgeous as were the chef's special rolls. The black sesame crusted special with cornflakes and kiwifruit vege roll rocked any 'Eatery' roll. Definitely will be back! -

I don't see what the fuss is about this place! I ordered takeout and the girl that took my order was really sweet, but not so sweet(I think it was a different girl) when I went in to pickup. I ordered a california roll, special scallop roll, and spicy tuna roll. All were pretty good, nothing to rave about. Prices were slightly high for the quality of sushi and size. I really didn't like that they put the ginger on top of the sushi on one of those plastic things that's cut to look like grass and used to separate food, which made a couple of pieces of sushi slightly soggy from the ginger juice! I'd come back out of convenience.

Good but not great. Didn't like the interior decoration at all. It doesn't matter at the end of the day, but the food and service didn't really make up for it either. For a very small restaurant like Zipang, there's too much on the menu to look and choose from - personally, I don't think it's particularly smart, but this is my opinion. The food was ok. Freshness and quality are definitely acceptable, but mediocre flavours. Didn't have the wow factor. In terms of service, very slow and inattentive. I would not return here at my expense. Would rather line up for Toshi.

Great sushi on Main Street. Service is nice and friendly, cool little room. Fish is fresh, expertly cut and nicely presented. Prices are very good for the quality. All fish is wild, which is a nice standard. Closed Mondays, which I often forget, until I'm at the front door for lunch. They offer some kids meals which my sons really like (and it's nice that they acknowledge little ones).

Inventive sushi, but also has the old standbys if you want to go the traditional route. Their presentation is fantastic - very colorful and it seems like they somehow work a candle into every dish.
Some of their special rolls are really great. The Spicy Cactus is one of my faves.

Where to start eh?
So todays topic is Sushi eh?
Yeah, no way. we went to Zipang eh, and uh recognized the dude behind the counter eh. Whoa Dude! It was that guy from the Richmond night market who introduced everyone to Takoyaki!
No way! Yes indeed it was. Yasuyo recognized him and this was actualy the reason why we came. Because it is always busy. Good food rotation and good quality. She remembered talking to him at the Night market (quite a few years ago now) and he mentioned that they just opened a new restaurant (then ) called Zipang.
Well, years after, we finaly have come to try it out.
After reading the reviews here on Yelp, I was surprised that nobody wrote about the dishes off the beaten path. They all seemed to write about the basics. What about their signature dishes? I mean really? Salmon is salmon if it's really fresh and cut right. And if the rice is flavoured properly. But something creative like the Zipang Sushi salad with it's crispy golden fried rice vermicelli topping or the Black sesame encrusted "Black Cactus" sushi rolls or the Spicy Angel Kiss with a thin slivered sheet of Daikon radish on top.
Overall, I'd rate this now @ above average. 15 years ago it would have been a 5 star, solid. Now with so many places to choose from and so much competitive variety, I'd give it a good solid 4. And yes the girls are pretty and they guys have that cool Japanese style behind the sushi bar. It is a hip place and a great neighbourhood sushi spot to go to if you live in the neighbourhood. Arigatou!
Oh! don't forget to call and make reservations! There usually is a lineup even with a reservation!
And did I mention the waitresses are pretty? ummm yeah, I think I did.Listed in: Japanese Food. What it Means…

A cool little sushi place on Main street. I tried it for the first time last week after hearing good things from a few people. I must say its definitely not bad but not quite good enough for 5/5, probably because I've been spoiled by Toshi's which is just down the street and has a larger menu and better food. Of all the things I ordered, the fried oysters and the eggplant were the best. To Zipangs credit their eggplant is better than Toshi's. All in all the food was very good and its a place that I would try again (probably when the line up at Toshi's it too long, ha).
