    Zimmerman's: for when
    a) Honest Ed's is too high-falootin'
    b) You're skint
    c) You're thrifty
    d) All or some of the above

You'll find a bunch of random items here for cheeeeeap. Blankets. Thermal innerwear. Granny panties in size XXL. Questionable g-string underwear in size XS. Canned tuna. (I swear that's just a random sampling and not a list of supplies for a Saturday night at my place).

It's a bit grungy, but at these prices you're not paying for someone to kiss your ass and hand you your Made-in-China sundries on a silver platter. Zimmerman's is worth a cruise around for random cheap things you might need -- and things you didn't think you needed at all.

Zimmerman's is one of Kensington's discount institutions for a ragtag assortment of goods, including groceries, clothes, and random household fare. It's got tradition on its side, and it keeps the old Europeans coming in for good conversation and the cheap Ragu pasta sauce. Hells, yeah!

You don't come here for the clothes unless you're retro and want to bring back the fashion of BiWay and Bargain Harolds. Stick with the canned food staples, cheap linen (including thick, warm blankets for $25 -- beat that, Home Sense), and old-school community that brought the people to Kensington Market in the first place.

I love any kind of store that makes me feel like I *could* be remembering it from my childhood. Though I doubt I was ever here in the '80s, I get the feeling not much would have changed if I had.

With the absence of such old-school icons as Bargain Harold's and BiWay in my adult life, I can't help but bask in the type of establishments where all things are cheap, dusty, old, polyester, and non-biodegradable.
This is a part of our irresponsible North American consumerist past, and I fear that my children will grow up never having seen the Queen-Size pantyhose by world-renowned brand Jeannie (see photo #3). So, I did what I can to fix that.
    You're welcome.

p.s. I also got a pair of "magic gloves" for $.99, and my shopping companions and I almost ended up with (magic?) matching, flesh-coloured waffle suits for a very reasonable price! (ie. long johns). Oh, and they have Ragu!

p.p.s. I promise, I am done with the word "magic"- for now.

There are discount stores and then there are discount stores and while they may seem the same in type, they are worlds apart in quality.  On the one side you have stores like Dollarama that while they are cheap they never really make you feel cheap and then there are stores like Zimmerman's Discount. The last time I felt as cheap as I did in Zimmerman's, I was in Honest Ed's and I can safely say that Zimmerman's is worse.  The store is not a vintage store but the clothes look more worn than you would like when buying new clothes.  There are some stores that have a kind and genteel nature, but Zimmerman's has all the atmosphere of the dangerous end of a shotgun.  I didn't like the store and got the impression that the staff expected me to steal something at any minute (as if I would want anything from their store.)  I wouldn't recommend  this store to anyone because it is dirty and cheap and it will make you feel the same way.

you know, i walked in here with no camera in tow (as from experience all yelpers can appreciate that there is a general phobia from business owners - understandable in some cases), and the people who were manning the store regarded me as suspicious.  it sure felt like it.  they felt like close talkers.  i hate that.

i was silent walking around looking at their vast array of wife beaters and sweat socks and i felt mildly invaded by their googly eyes but i continued to peruse.

its no great shakes here folks, but one shouldnt expect more;  this is a useful store, if you are interested in getting simple cheap clothes that you use as staples.  i would have purchased some undershirts/white vneck tshirts if they had any but they didnt.

either way, no matter what you are selling it still behooves any proprietor to be a little bit more relaxed and helpful.
