I've probably eaten here about 10 times now, and have had a chance to try a variety of dishes from them. From their different Sashimi to their udon. Their udon noodle is fantastic, and easily one of the best I've had. They make it taste nice and smooth so that you can slurp all that deliciousness.

I wish I could write a review about all the foods I've tried, but I can tell you that this place gets really busy at times. And they do take out as well.

I also recently found out they're going to be in a documentary about the origins of the BC roll.

And yes I'll be back, because the food is good, the service is always friendly and polite, and ....did I mention I like the udon?

Disappointment! My hopes were so high after reading the other reviews on Yelp. After my experience last night, I don't understand the rave reviews.

The place is a small take-out type place with limited seating. That's fine, since I was alone, and I don't weigh the size of an establishment negatively. But given the take-out nature of this place, I was actually surprised at its prices. It really shouldn't have 1 dollar sign here. The pretty basic combo that I got -- the "Downtown Combo" -- was $10.50 plus tax, and it came with only the sushi. No miso soup, no salad. Almost every sushi place I've been to includes a soup and salad in the combo. And at that price I'd expect it.

The sushi was fine and the portions were decent. But what killed it for me was that they put wasabi EVERYWHERE. I absolutely hate wasabi and don't go near it. I had no idea that the chef would put wasabi in the tuna rolls and on every piece of sushi. Ugh.

This was my first sushi experience during this trip to Vancouver. I need a better experience before I leave!

One of my favorite sushi places for a takeout lunch.

This is one of the most authentic places around the area IMO.
They usually have a special Chirashi which is a very good deal (under $10 usually)
It has been difficult for me to find Hamachi in the city and Zero One has had it lately so that has made me very happy.

Single items on the menu are small and low in price so it's great for the days when you just can't decide what you are in the mood for.
A little sashimi here... a mini udon there... a seaweed salad too? Yeah why not.

I cannot give them more stars because sometimes the sushi is inconsistent, sometimes there is way too much rice, and too little fish.
There has been a few times when my sashimi was still frozen in the center, or my takeout order was wrong.

All in all though, it's a good value and hits the spot.

I was determined to try this place after seeing all the good reviews for it, but it was just never on my way to anything. So finally during the Christmas shopping rush (read: a week before the holidays), I sucked it up and trekked out to this place from Pacific Center. If you aren't looking for it, you're sure to miss it - that's how small it is. I didn't realize how many times I've passed by this place without actually realizing how popular it was.

It was pretty quiet when I showed up with only two customers inside. The service is cafeteria style, so it was speedy. NOTE: the pre-made rolls in the side fridget are 30% off after 5pm. I didn't see this until after I had placed my order at 5:30, and realized I could've just picked up cali rolls at a cheaper price. Bummer that the lady taking my order didn't say anything either, it's not like she was busy since there were only three of us in the restaurant.

The salmon and tuna sashimi were good, and the cali and house rolls were okay. The price is definitely a seller, at $16 for the meal, but the food was only okay. Overall, if I'm looking for a cheap eat, this may be a good option (if only it were closer)!

Easily accessible via the 22, 4, 17, 19 buses that run along Pender, or close to any of the buses down Granville.

Went and checked into this place for dinner and experienced a very mediocre meal. The place would definitely be better as a take out spot. We were served with paper plates without a side plate. Our food had way to much white rice and our service was average. I am truly surprised with all the good reviews of this place.

Value: was decent, there was some specials that were cheap.

    Will probably not go back.......

This is hands down my favourite sushi place for lunch downtown.

This little hole in the wall serves amazingly fresh sushi.  If it hadn't been for Yelp I would have walked right by this gem.  The restaurant itself is cramped.  I suggest getting takeout and eating elsewhere.

I love their salmon sashimi, chopped scallop nigiri, and tamago nigiri.  The prices are reasonable.  You can easily order enough food to fill you up for about $10.

They have an online ordering system that's convenient and easy to use and service is super friendly.

After my glowing review yesterday, I came back the very next day and ordered the large sashimi again plus the chicken rice bowl and bbq salmon rice bowl. Boy, how things change in 24 hours. The fish pieces this time was much smaller, and the bbq salmon rice bowl was nothing more than a bit of flaked leftover cooked salmon in brown rice (no new sauce or flavor) with a pile of fish roe. totally felt ripped off. So if you average my 5 star rating yesterday with today's 2 star rating... come here for a hit and miss experience. And definitely don't order any if the cooked rice bowls... much better elsewhere for the same price.

I ordered a half Tropical roll (Spicy Tuna Roll wrapped with Avocado and Mango) and California rolls.  They were just okay.  I think I prefer Sushi House in Richmond better.  The avocado was had turned a bit brown so it wasn't fresh.

The service was friendly.  I ordered take out and the order came out in less than 10 minutes.

I ordered the Chirashi Don, while it isn't gourmet chirashi don, it was a pretty filling meal. The slices of fish were just the right size (not too little!). I like the addition of saba, as I normally never have this fish, it was a good balance since it had a saltier, fishier taste than the rest of the sashimi. They gave a generous amount of wasabi (which I love). I think it would've been better if they placed the seaweed either on the side or on top of the fish, as I do enjoy the seaweed but it was rather soggy when I got past the fish. I liked the addition of diced marinated mushrooms (they tasted almost like as if they were pickled). The rice portion was good, I had a lot left over. Speaking of the rice, I have to say that they do the rice right - it's not too vinegary and it's not overcooked. Sushi rice is just as important as the fish on it.

I would like to come back and try some of their specialty rolls, but maybe during a time when they're not so busy.

I was very surprised by the quality of sushi here! It was really good! I ordered the downtown combo which came with various pieces of raw sushi and also an order of salmon sashimi. The fish was very fresh and tasty and the salmon sashimi was wild, which was a surprise! Most places serve the pink farmed Atlantic salmon with the think white bands of fat, but this place had the ultra red wild salmon with hardly any fat, if none at all.

Don't let the look of the restaurant and its grimy creepiness stop you from having a bite here, its really good and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised too!

There's something to be said about restaurants that put a lot of effort and care in their cuisine and let their food shine as opposed to relying on a trendy modern atmosphere but with food that is meh! Does that make any sense? Well it does it me!

I'm on a sushi rampage, I just can't get enough of the stuff! Why I don't have the sushi sensei badge yet, I don't know?!?!?!

This is the best Sushi shop in Vancouver! Don't judge by how it looks on outside.

I tried many kind of Sushi shop in Vancouver so far, because I love sushi and sashimi. When I was in Japan, I usually go to Sushi restaurant once or twice a week.

Finally I found the best of the Sushi restaurant. Especially I like flesh sashimi and flesh Tororo. I can recommend you confidently.

The sashimi is where it's at. It's nice and fresh and darn tasty.

The roll I recommend is the scallop roll. That one was awesome but everything else was just good and not too outstanding.

The thing that is bad about this place is the seating, as there are very very few and none that can seat more than 2 interacting people. Unless you plan on texting each other or maybe going old school and passing papers.

The containers were also all styrofoam and disposable paper products. They definitely need to change this up. Or next time I will have to bring my own utensils and keep the tip for myself.

I've been to this place twice now due to the great reviews on Yelp, and both visits have been less than stellar. Neither times have they been very fast- I had to wait over half an hour just now, even though it was 8:00pm and they didn't seem to have much going on.

The sushi itself is average at best. The sashimi is pretty good, though I did find a huge bone in a piece of the salmon sashimi and it was slightly warm. I also ordered California rolls, which were just okay and not wrapped very well, and half of a sunset roll (salmon, mango and
    avocado) which was pretty bland.

I want so badly to like this place because Japanese-run sushi places are, on average, some of the best, but I really don't think I'll be returning again, especially since great sushi restaurants in Vancouver are anything but scarce.

Don't judge this place by how it looks on the outside!

I was searching through Yelp last night on what I should eat for lunch at work today and came across Zero One Sushi.  Mmm freakin' MMMMM!!

They have an online ordering system which is quick and convenient.  As I opened my box of sushi and tasted it, everything was fresh.  I had salmon maki (wild salmon), baby scallop nigiri, tuna nigiri, hokkigai nigiri, tomago nigiri.  As I'm taking my last bite and writing this review, I wish I had ordered more.

The soy sauce was Kikkoman brand, which I like (I'm picky about stuff like that) and the ginger was the yellow ginger (my favorite) and not the pink colored ones.

Looks like I found a new place for lunch!

Yes, I found myself thinking today that I'm glad Yelp got this one right. Instead of sushi, I got one of the grilled salmon lunch boxes for 7 bucks, and it was pretty delicious. Quick and easy, quite healthy and not too filling that it'll induce the after-lunch-food-coma.

So, thanks for the heads up on Zero One for decent sushi downtown.

In just that one block on Pender, there are 3 sushi joints, and I will always choose Zero One. This is where I go if I'm hungry for cheap but decent quality sushi.

By all means, this is not a super fancy place and unfortunately, not environmentally friendly. They use styrofoam ... everything, even if you're eating-in.

That said, their service is sublime. After going twice, the cashier knew my name and order. After 5 times and having introduced it to a few friends, she knew them too. I once walked in and was told that my friend had just left.

The second best part about going to Zero One is that it reminds me of lunch in Tokyo, where the "salary-men" would come in for a quick lunch at the bar, and dash out. Awesome!

Oh Sushi Zero One, how I love thee!
I love thee menu depth and breadth and height,
O how thee spicy tuna beckon my name at 11:35am, and doth thy dynamite roll with daikon sprouts bring a flavour party in my mouth!
I love thee purely, but sometimes with soy sauce and wasabi, and the love is served with such sweetness and light from behindst thee counter...

This place is rated really well, but I wanted this to stand out.  2 stars is apparently "Meh. I've experienced better."  How have I experienced better?  Well, no matter how you order here, you get styrofoam.  If you order to go - styrofoam dishes (standard, I guess).  If you order for eating in, everything is on a styrofoam plate.  If you want tea, you get a styrofoam cup.  I appreciate that they're a diner and bonafide sushi joint, but that doesn't work for me.

That said, their food is solid and I had one of the best chopped scallop rolls I've ever had downtown.  Their customer service and business execution are great.

But I'll think twice about heading back over the delivery method if I'm not prepared to bring my own containers.

    * Quarter Pounder (without cheese thankfully) *

Popped by Zero One today for a quick lunch bite and was pleased to find they are taking advantage of the local uni season and running a uni donburi special.

They cover a large bowl of good quality sushi rice with thinly sliced nori and on top of that place a quarter pound of uni!  Yes, a quarter pound!  Here is a photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The uni was extremely fresh, smooth, and delicately flavoured.  Delicious!

This was ridiculously good value too, as the donburi was only $9.95 for such a generous portion.  Crazy!

This place will never be #1 in quality.  But it is #1 in price.  Today I had a chirashi don (mixed sashimi on top of rice) for $8 including tax and tip.  The same thing elsewhere would be about $13 or $14.

The people here are Japanese, and they've got a whole slew of items on the menu that you might not find at a regular sushi place (like assorted rice bowls and udon specials).  Everything is cheap cheap cheap.

This is not a fancy sit-down sushi restaurant (they actually have very limited seating, maybe two or three tables and a counter with three chairs).  This is a take-out sushi snack bar that makes decent sushi at very low prices.

My only complaint was that all the tableware was disposable and not very environmentally friendly.  This choice seems odd in a town that prides itself on its environmental awareness.

I love the simplicity of donburi. For the lack of a better description, it's the cleanest-tasting comfort food. Nothing beats fresh, sweet, and solid-textured tuna or salmon sashimi topped on rice......not even the most inventive sushi roll.

Zero One Sushi offers a terrific variation of donburi. I've tried all except the tuna & mountain yam so far. Prices range from $6.50 - $8.75. Their service is always quick and staff are always friendly. The place is small, but with the quality ingredients, nice service, and great prices.....I'm willing to let eat elbow-to-elbow with strangers.

We order delivery from Zero One Sushi at least twice a week. It's that good. They have the good salmon, and the people who work here are very nice. They don't have a deep fryer, so if you're in the mood for unhealthy sushi this isn't the place, but in general they have really good quality fish and tasty rolls. My favorite things are the salmon nigiri and salmon/avocado roll. YAY SALMON.

This place has become very popular recently, so if you're going to order delivery, it's best to do it ahead of time or during non-peak eating hours.

    "yes - small assorted"
    "as-sor-ted sa-shi-mi, small..."
    "yes please"
"okay, let me repeat your order..... salmon sashimi - 4 pieces, and assorted sashimi 5 pieces"
    "yes"
    "do you live downtown area"
"yes, i can be there in 5 minutes"

At the end of the day.. be very patient as I am sure they are doing the best they can if they cannot hear your order as clearly as they would like.
Super friendly when I walked in.... and as usual - extra wasabi please.

I opened my take out box to find, large, rich coloured salmon, what seemed to be fresh juicy tuna, snapper, and a piece of tuna which had nice ginger and green onion garnish.... and not to my surprise tasted oh sooo sushilicious (OOOO NEW WORD!)

There was an extra thin-slice of fish (couldn't tell what it was..) but it was wrapped around cucumber and green onion as decoration. Lots of radish shreads were given... and I could not have been happier :)

The folks who work here are really nice.

The flavor of the spicy tuna don sauce is great. Sesame purée, seeds, chili sauce, sugar... Nom

However, the tuna itself was sliced along the grain, which wouldn't be an issue but the pieces are also large...so I got big white stringy bits. I couldn't bite the sashimi!

Sushi rice is deliciously seasoned. The Ginger isn't too pungent and it's a natural colour.

Will definitely come back to try other dons. Maybe the white stringy thing was a one off "we are closing in an hour" issue?

Good food at a good price!  It's located between some Korean eateries on Pender St and is a very small place with only a few tables, but their food is quite tasty!  I had the Salmon and Salmon Roe/ikura don and it was delicious!!!  There was more ikura than salmon, which was a surprise for me, as usually the ratio generally is vice versa, but I didn't mind at all, as I love ikura;-)  The rice that they used was good and this place is run by Japanese folks so the taste is authentic.  It's best to just order for take out since it's a tiny hole-in-the-wall type of place; it took about 7min or so to receive our orders and afterwards we took it back to our hotel for dinner.

Never judge a restaurant by it's exterior! Not being a Vancouverian (word?) this place is amazing! A little hard to find, it is a small place with very little signage, I only knew it was the right place when I walked up to the doorway and read the address. But it is right next to a pizza place that has a ton of neon lights so look for that. We ventured in based on the Yelp reviews and when I walked in I initially thought Yelp had mislead me, but then I got the food and I realized this place is so legit! So cheap and so good. Better than most sushi places in Seattle and the price is just ridiculously low. This place is a no frills, small, and unassuming, but serves better stuff than the most pretentious places in Seattle.

My last review was about the sushi, so I'm updating now that I tried the Udon.

The Udon is nice and chewy! Yay!! and I had the Cold one (summer menu). The soup was great. Strong enough to be flavourful even when cold, but not the dark soy-sauce kind like the dipping ones. I loved how the daikon-oroshi and ginger and yamaimo (optional) added to the summer cool-refreshing-ness!

I also tried the the Marinated Tuna donburi before. It was good. The Marinated Tuna part. The rice part was fine, but nothing special. But then I'm one of the few Japanese people who aren't that big on rice... :-p I will tell you that it wasn't overcooked and beginning to be pasty, which I really hate, so I would have noticed.

I forgot to mention last time that there was one thing that I definitely didn't like: the Tamago (Egg). It's not fluffy; a bit to sweet and like hard gelatin. Tamago is never the highlight of my Chirashi, though, so it didn't dissuade me from liking this restaurant.
