Review from Kristin K.

If you are looking for a quick bite to eat... Do yourself a favor and go into the actual St. Albert Mall and DON'T eat at Zellers' Family Restaurant.
Ate here for the first time the other day with my mother, husband, toddler, and baby in tote. We opted for the special of the day - 2 piece fish 'n chips for $6.49 instead of $7.99 and my toddler ordered mini burgers.
Where to start...
Okay, it's kinda boring that we all ordered fish 'n chips but we LOVE good fish 'n chips... and I even have a Fish 'n Chips list on Yelp that I created as a labour of love while on the hunt for the BEST Fish 'n Chips (which by the way are at Billingsgate Seafood!).
When our entrees arrived the wrong meal, entirely, had been brought to my 3 year old. The waitress that brought the food was not the same one who took our order, yet insisted that I must have ordered incorrectly. Umm... how do you mess up the kids' menu. Why would I have ordered sliders with all the fixins for my 3 year old when I had the paper kids ' menu in my hand when I ordered and specifically inquired if they came with any condiments because my toddler prefers plain. Additionally, I ordered a side of BBQ sauce and requested no ketchup, etc. to be brought. It took several minutes to convince her that this wasn't what I ordered and then I had to request 3 times to get the milk that came with the meal for my daughter.
So we, all three adults, had all 3 orders of our fish 'n chips while my daughter had to wait for her food... Not easy to entertain a toddler who is hungry. Our fish was squishy and the breading was thick and greasy - clearly frozen fish. Now, I didn't necessarily expect them to hand bread the fish themselves - but the pieces were miniature. 3 bites and it's gone... literally. And even at $6.49 we felt a little ripped off. I had to inquire for malt vinegar - and the tartar sauce came in the little prepackaged jelly size container "Heinz." My Hubby said that was probably the best part of the meal - so sad.
About 10 minutes later my toddler's meal arrived, and was also quite bland and uneventful. Again, not expecting fireworks, but also not expecting the meat in her hamburger to be so mealy - could have been a bean substitute for all we knew.
Went to pay the bill at the end and there was a 99 cent charge for a tablespoon of BBQ sauce! Seriously!?! Really? You mess up the order, make her eat after we've all finished our meal, and then want me to pay 99 cents for a tablespoon of BBQ sauce!?! And not that is really surprised me at this point, but the BBQ sauce was horrid - maybe the worst I have ever had. I think it was the kind of sauce intended for basting meat for cooking - not for eating as a condiment.
Perhaps if you had been stranded on an island for the past 6 months or just came off of the game show Survivor, you might enjoy a meal of fish 'n chips here. Or if you just had jaw surgery and can't chew... Needless to say, we won't be returning to the Zellers Cafe anytime soon.
