I'm a man, I've got my hair cut by stylist Ryo who has long hair. I paid 5dollars more cause he is a master, but he definitely deserved it. He listened to me really carefully when I told him what style I wanted, and did it as I said. And the hair massage was good. His assistant did hair massage and shampoo. I was charged 40, and after plus tax and 10 % tip, I paid 50.

Every time I visit Vancouver, I have to make a stop at Zeal. It's like my trip to Vancouver is not complete without Zeal! So far I've had hair cuts, colors and treatments from here and loved them all. I always ask for a master cut, it's more expensive, but I think it's well worth it since it's like that extra insurance for getting a good cut and the cuts so far have always grown out nicely.
Things I love about this place:
- The shampoo chairs are amazing and go through a cycle of back and leg massages.
- The latest Japanese techniques are used. The hair treatment includes a hydrating steam bath that locks in moisture and deepens the conditioning
- You can feel like a king/queen when they hang your coat, lock up your belongings in our own locker (you take the key with you), serve you hot tea and rotate your own magazine pile for you.Listed in: Vancouver, BC

Did not have a good experience. Paid $200 for a perm, one week later you can't even tell I had a perm. I offered to pay for a haircut, but I wanted the remaining portion back so that I could have a perm done elsewhere. They said it was the owner's policy never to give refunds, and my only choice was to have the perm done again. I didn't think this was reasonable, and I will never go back, nor would I recommend this salon to anyone. I lost $200, but it's my fault for choosing such a terrible salon.

I never knew what a good haircut could be like until I came here.
You see, I have lots of long hair with strands that resemble stiff wires. I could give three people full heads of hair and still have some left. When I shower, the pile of hair left in the drain-catcher thing resembles a small cat. BUT NO MORE!
Don't get me wrong - I love having thick, strong, silky shiny hair. However, even when it was shorter-ish, I couldn't wear a ponytail for more than a few hours before I would get a headache. The weight would pull at my scalp, and I would be left with a sore patch on my head when I took my hair down. AND, I have to use a metal bristle brush because if I use a boar-bristle (or synthetic-bristle) type, it takes too long to get through the tangles. I have to brush the same spot multiple times, and then i get big pile of hair on the floor.
When I went to hairstylists, they would try to help me by "thinning" my hair out. When I gathered my hair up in my fingers, the circumference did feel smaller, and my hair felt lighter, but really...not much of a difference. It would still take an hour to use a curling iron (I need to use less hair for each section).
But then I went to Zeal salon on Robson upon a coworker's recommendation...and they actually gave me what i didn't know I wanted. First, I got an awesome shampoo/head massage for what could have been 20 minutes or something like that. I was seated (more like reclined) in this comfy squishy bed-like chair. They put a thin cover over my eyes, (presumably) so the light on the ceiling wouldn't bother me, or that water wouldn't splash? It was so good (I think they put some sort of cooling/refreshing stuff in it), I half-fell asleep at the end. :O
Then I showed my hairstylist, Chika, a picture I found of a Japanese girl with the side-swoop bangs and voluminous crown with curled ends, and I told her about technicalities with my fringe (I can't have a too-long swoopy fringe because of my low hairline), and she didn't try to convince me not to get it! I hate when hairstylists tell me they won't do certain things when I think they should compromise or try to figure it out. I had a hairstylist tell me not to get straight bangs, but when I finally found someone who did it for me, everyone liked it.
Anyway, Chika totally attacked my hair, woooo! None of this wimpy little razor crap...she was confident and aggressive. When the hair was falling onto my cape, there were long 10" sections, not just little pieces. In the meantime, I was reading a giant Japanese magazine...fully trusting her, and forgetting to look up into the mirror to see what she was doing. I trusted my hair in her hands. She kept the length at the back, and when I gathered up my hair, it was half the circumference, but still luscious.
I came back here months later to get my first digital perm with Monica. Digital perm uses hot rods with the temperature regulated by a machine, which has a digital display. Regular perms just use solution, not heat. It was a little pricy, and it took hours to do (I have a lot of hair), and was a little painful (the heat can get a little too hot), but the curls lasted for months, even after I went on vacation to super humid Malaysia during rainy season...and 9 months after that, my hair is still wavy! 9 months is a long time to not get a haircut though - so that means that I will return! Soon! Try it!
The only thing I will mention here is that some of the staff here are not as good with English as they are with Japanese. If you don't speak Japanese, bring along a photo example or two to emphasize what you want (you should at any salon anyway). -

I tried this place after being disappointed by Chura. Definitely more expensive, the cut was ~$55.
The hairstylist was a guy but forgot his name now.. But the hair grew out nicely after a cut here, and that's always a good sign that the stylist did a good job. I am not sure if I want to come back here, as I found a better salon! But I really liked their massage chair while having my hair washed. hahaha! That was really relaxing! -

My hair is really long, so loose perms just get weighed down back to straight. My stylist here recommended Digital Perm, which means they hook up the curlers to a heating machine to perm, in addition to adding chemicals. Apparently, it stays longer, too. I was pleased with the result.
The chairs you sit in for shampooing is a massage chair!
I liked this location on Robson downtown, but I found that I can get the same "Japanese trained" service for a bit cheaper at Hive (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...), so I haven't gone recently. I would still recommend it for the service.
