This restaurant brings out the man in me. Lots of meat on skewers over charcoals reminds me of summer, but instead of being outdoors, it's in a small (cozy? cramped?) little space on Denman.
Zakkushi is an izakaya... basically a Japanese tapas bar. That being said, you get amazing food, but in small quantities as you wash down your (relatively) cheap pitcher of beer. Apparently in the summer you can get a pitcher of Sapporo for $10! Too bad there's no outdoor patio.
I'm a fan of anything chicken and the beef tongue is succulent. And if you've never tried it, go for the pork belly.
Good to head once in a while, but it gets pricey really quick. I recommend going there for appetizers before eating dinner... or the opposite. Grab some good dinner at home or another restaurant, and spent the rest of the night surrounded by smoke and J-Pop tunes! -

Love this place. I spend too much money here but that's my problem. What's not to like about having all sorts of meats being grilled over charcoal BBQ Japanese style right in front of you as you sit at the bar with a glass of beer?
The best are the chicken parts: reba (liver), kokoro (heart) and zuri (gizzard) are served here. Too bad they don't have the nankotsu (cartilage) - pretty sure they don't - because they're delicious (obviously). Now, I'm guessing most people would be a bit put off by that stuff, so if you aren't up for it (you're totally missing out) there are plenty of safe options too: beef, pork and chicken. Although they're good it's not all too exciting. Of course the pork belly is always a must (they call it p-toro here - p for pork?)
Also tried some of their in-kitchen items but I found them to be pretty average. Just stick with the yakitoris and you'll be set. -

This is my absolute favourite place to eat in Vancouver now.
Their menu is extensive and they have pictures for everything which makes ordering so much easier. I like ordering only 2-3 things at a time so that I get to eat everything while it's still nice and hot!
I came here twice in a row in one week because the first time was just so good-- the chicken liver second time around came to the table dripping blood (umm. yuck), but still love it here.
I came for the chicken hearts, liver and gizzards, but will be back to try everything else on the menu.
Just noticed it's rated to be $$$ place to eat, but with skewers coming out to $1.5~$7, I think their prices are very reasonable.
I've only sat at the bar- and think it's the only place I would sit- sometimes the cooks hand you over the order to you directly :) . They take reservations! (2hr limit when they're busy) -

This has honestly got to be my favorite restaurant in Vancouver. I love everything about this place. The atmosphere is fun, the place smells great, the servers are all very friendly, and you can bring your friends here to get pretty drunk while eating really delicious food. They're extremely consistent with their tastes.
My favorites are the:
- Memaki - garlic shoots wrapped in something salty. I don't know what it is but it tastes awesome
- PToro - grilled pork belly
- Buta Syabu Salad - salad with an egg and pork -- sounds odd but really great
- Onigiri - BBQ rice ball
I come here at least once a month, and I would probably eat here everyday if I lived closer haha.. although shouldnt eat that much BBQ'd stuff... -

2.5 *. Yummy and a fun drinking atmosphere. Good casual service and cute waitresses. Still a bit $$$ for me tho... (how did everything we order -- not much -- add up to THAT? $1.5 for skewers can really add up when you're hungry.) That said, their crispy salad = mouthgasm and cant go wrong w chicken gizzard yakitori & bacon wrapped anything. That said, I'll be over at guu/ gyoza long unless my yakitori cravings are outta control.

The BEST!
I always head over whenever I want a good taste of authentic style Japanese food. Yakitori is my favourite, I lived in Japan and can say this is great stuff! The service is always friendly, the place is always high energy, food is always fresh, and the taste is amazing! By the way, those with some common sense, be smart and make reservations. It's a popular place.
I like some of the fusion flavours they add to the food. For instance, cheese yaki is yummy, and ebi mayo is really good. I love the use of daikon salad, that stuff cleanses your whole system. The chairs are really cute by the way, the seats pop up, and you can put your jackets in. The nice thing about where it's located is that whenver I want some desert after, I can walk right next door to Dairy queen for some ice cream. Keep up the good work Zakkushi and staff! ^^ -

Went back to Zakkushi, husband in tow, to have him experience the deliciousness for himself ! 2 hour limit for eating and that is fine by me because its well staffed and the food comes off the grill hot and fresh. There is a great variety in drink choices and I was never left to go thirsty for one moment :-)
They even have the croquettes I can no longer enjoy at Gyoza King !!!
I do declare this will be a regular haunt for me - don't miss this West End gem ! -

It's been a while since I stopped coming here regularly, but it was my favourite kushiyaki joint in Vancouver... well, by default because options in town are limited.
Noticed a couple changes on my last visit. Firstly, service is lot less attentive than it was before - which I prefer. I'm frequently interrupted mid-story by sidling, creeper servers at the worst possible time like: "... I mean, I'll go to jail just to prove a point, know what I mean? Like I give a fuck about jail.... oh yes, may I have another?" Awkward.
On weekend nights, it can be difficult to get the servers' attention. But just pick up your panties and holler out when you need something. Reading over the other reviews complaining about the service: No - it's not because you're white. I'm Asian and speak (shitty) Japanese - they equally discriminate. Now shut up, roundeye.
And the menu seems very different - all the grilled skewer meat is still here but the selection is wider now with more typical izakaya fare. To be honest, I can't really give a fair review of the food as it's one of my favourite places to drink. The yakitori is always good and everything is sufficiently greasy and salty as good accompaniment with drinks. It's not gourmet, but it's good izakaya food.
For some reason, this place has an image as being expensive and frequently having lineups. Yes, if you're trying to full off tiny $2 skewers, you will get hit with a huge bill. But it's pretty cheap if you're just after drinks and small bites. And I strolled at 11PM (last call is 1AM on weekends) and got a seat immediately.
Unlike most Vancouver J-tapas joints, they have pitchers ($15 for Sapporo). I like the communal feeling of pitchers and drink pouring is a seriously underrated skill. However, midway through a pitcher and our regular-sized mugs - we switched gears and ordered mega-Sapporos. It's unlike me to get the poor value choice (1800mL jug for $15 vs. 1000mL mega for $9 - do the math and you're paying an extra whopping $0.67 per litre). But the mega Sapporos just feel so damned good in your hands - and they come frozen cold - ice chunks literally melted onto the table.
My new friends at the next table summed it up best, "Yo Chicago! [a name they bequeath me] - what the fuck is that? You're making me look like a lil bitch over here!".
And finally - the crowd/ambiance. It's a mix of quiet Japanese students, couples and on this particular night: hard drinking Japanese d-boys. Usually bad news - but Japanese people are my favourite people to drink with. It must be the shame, repression and tentacle erotica [I would advise against Googling this] that uncorks limitless exuberance for drinks and merrymaking.
Anyways - it's not the cheapest or even one of the best J-tapas joints in town. But by far the closest to an actual izakaya in Japan - it's casual cheap drinks and fun. On a night that was filled with loud yelling, boorish drinking and cursing in Japanese -- it's like partying in Japan. Have cigarette smoke in the air and it's 5-stars from me.Listed in: A Compendium of Fine…

TWELVE dollars for a half-liter of wine?! Now *this* is why Zakkushi is authentic: izakayas are for big drinking, small bites, and good friends. I love this place for *not* doting on me, for *not* waiting on me hand and foot, for feeding me tiny tasty morsels of grilled goodness, for offering cheap drinks, and for accommodating my big laughs.

Yes, we're standing right here. The tables are half empty but the waitress who can't be arsed to talk to potential paying customers tells the cook who is condescending to speak to us (without eye contact) that we can't sit there.
Screw that. I'm sure there are places who are interested in our money. -

Garlic Stubs FTW!!!
If you're a fan of bacon, then these skewers are for you! They're one of my favourite things to order when dining here. The Memaki skewers are garlic stems cut into little stubs, wrapped in bacon, and cooked over a charcoal grill. Sound tasty? It's absolutely delish! Who says you can't get your bacon and veggies on one stick?
This place is great for small groups as the place itself is quite tiny. When I dined here, there was about 12 of us and it was really difficult getting tables together. What's great about this place in general is that most items are ordered by individual skewer. Average price is about $1.50 - $2.00 per stick, so you can really order a variety of different meats. They also have salads, sashimi, and larger dishes if you're craving any of those - it's like a one stop shop!
If you're a little adventurous and want to move away from things on the grill, try the Yukke - raw beef in sweet chili sauce, with a raw quail egg & grated daikon! Mix it up and it tastes amazing!
There are a few locations throughout Vancouver, and so far, I like this one more than the one on Main street. The items here taste better, and the atmosphere is more upbeat. I have yet to visit the one in Kitsilano, but I think Denman has set the standard pretty high!
I had a great time with my friends, and I think you will too ($9.99 summer beer pitchers always helps!) -

Oh, Zakkushi. In my opinion, this is Vancouver's gold star.
Zakkushi is an authentic Japanese Izakaya, with an amazing atmosphere. Not to be the "I've been to Japan, so I know" person, but I have spent time in Japan, and this place is the real deal.

Review from Gary M.
These past few days we are playing tourist in our own town. We are going to places we haven't been to for a while and are ordering little bites and some beer to wash them down. Then we are going to the next place and doing the same!
There is a word for this in Japanese: Hoshigo and it basically means "drink and go".
Our first stop: Zakkushi Denman.
This used to be one of my favorite haunts. Fresh hot grilled meats, veggie skewers, noodle dishes and salads, all enjoyed with Japanese draft beer.
For some reason I haven't been here for a while and my how things have changed.
We were first "in line at the door" and first to be seated, but somehow we were like 8th to be served? It was as if they have a policy to start from the back and work their way towards the front of the restauarant. There was zero spark in the service tonight.
We ordered ebi mayo, four kinds of tsukune (ground chicken skewers) and cheese bacon mochi along with hot sake and draft beer.
The beer and sake came post haste. ahhh it went down great.
The ebi mayo came ~12 mins later and was perfect. hot, not too saucy and delightful.
The four kinds of tsukune came 15 mins after that and were dry, luke warm and really so-so. They must have taken a slow boat to our table.
Unless these kind of skewers come hot, they really don't tase good.
Next up cheese mochi, 15 mins later. As we were waiting the waitress asked us if we would like anything else as we waited for our last two skewers. hmmmmm no thanks.... at this rate it means we will be in here for over two hours!
The cheese mochi, when they finally came were hot and gooey. nom nom nom, dinner was finished two mins after that.
Overall, it was just a so-so experience. Not even fun to be in the room.
Used to be everything was hot, fun and a great experience. -
Review from Eva Z.
ZERO. Quite possibly the worst dining experience in our lives. We left irritated, frustrated and dumbfounded. I must note, we eat out a minimum of 3/4 times a week at different restaurants throughout NYC, and the states in general, and while in Vancouver it was our mission to eat well.
We couldn't help but feel like there is a preference towards Chinese/Asian customers in this joint. Strike one. This translated through the lack of service and attention during our meal. I did not get a refill of water until an hour and a half later, AFTER we asked for the bill.
This place is ridiculously overpriced. Three TINY cubes of chicken on a skewer for $2? When we saw our first skewer my face dropped. I felt insulted by having just paid $2 for it. But there were other skewers coming, in intervals of 15 to 20 minutes!!! you got three tiny cubes of either chicken or beef. What then is the point of taking our order at the same time.
We were getting really irritated, my fiance ran out 3 times to feed the meter!
We decided to ask for the cheque an hour and a half into our pathetic meal for gerbels. It was more like a snack for a 2 year old. We laughed when the 2 out of the 7 tiny skewers came out AFTER we had paid the bill. We paid and walked straight down the street to a pizza joint! I can say I've never left a restaurant HUNGRY!
It's obvious why this place is running. It's quite simple, all you need is to glance inside. Their clientele seems to love to congregate here in groups, they get preferential treatment by their own behind the counter. And I guess maybe if I was sloppy drunk on Sapporo and Sake I wouldn't mind either that my 7 skewers of pathetic meat took an hour and a half to make it to my table between ridiculously long intervals.
I DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Go ANYWHERE ELSE, unless you like getting irritated. -
Review from Daniel L.
Walking into Zakkushi was like being back in some tiny corner of Tokyo watching the chef cook through the heavy smoke behind the bar, even the servers couldnt speak english, only one out of 5 workers could understand what I was asking for, sure wish I spoke their language... your food comes on small sticks full of; pork, seafood, chicken, veg or sausage and sure adds up... our snacking with a drink eac was about $25pp, but sure less than the real trip.. Sitting at the bar we shared a double bench seat where theres a small coat check under the bench (who knew). My first visit here was well over do as I've always had great meals at the west 4th location.

Having lived in Japan, it always drove me crazy that the very best of Japanese cuisine (yakitori) was so hard to find here in Canada. However, before going on a recent trip to Vancouver, I know that if any city in western Canada would have a great yakitori place it would be Vancouver.
Google found Zakkushi for me and it was everything I hoped for and more.
The ambience was great, the food fantastic and the overall experience just as I remembered. The prices aren't cheap, but the food is top-notch and worth every penny. We spent $80 for dinner and felt like it was worth every penny.
Zakkushi is living proof that Japanese cuisine is not just about sushi. Now if they would only open a location in Edmonton! -
Review from Letie W.
My husband wanted to try another izakaya before leaving Vancouver. We were tempted to return to Guu again as we had a wonderful dinner, but I really wanted to try something else. After all, it's not often we travel up here.
This izakaya, Zakkushi, is known for its yakitori styled dishes. They cook their meats on a charcoal grill. Yes, it is bad to eat charcoal grilled dishes as some health literature states it can give you cancer, but I figure it isn't like I eat it all the time so it does not matter this once, right?
Zakkushi is a small restaurant and good thing we got there when they opened (530pm) as we didn't have reservations and the placed filled up like crazy within an hour. Check out our dinner...yes...12 dishes in all!! Oink, oink!!

Review from Sheryl D.
Don't be intimidated by the prices and the slightly unfamiliar Japanese menu. It's not that expensive. I suppose this depends on how much you can eat. Our bill came to $85 for a party of four and a toddler (without the tip) and it's pretty average for a nice dinner out in Vancouver, especially in that area. That bill includes several round of alcoholic drinks too.
The food delivered was as expected, fresh, flavourful and perfectly smoky from the grill. I'm a huge fan of the Kobe beef meatballs, any chicken/beef/pork skewer, the quail egg skewer and the smoked mackerel. Beware the grilled mackerel though, it's not for the casual fish fan because it's quite pungent. If you must try it, get it with the chicken teriyaki bowl to balance it out. The drinks are cheaper compared to Western restaurants in the area, about $4.80 for cocktails and plum wine. However, don't be fooled by the prices, drinks are served in smallish quantities (except for the giant Asahi beer bottle served at the table beside us). If you drop by, the plum wine and the lychee/orange juice vodka cocktails are delish.
Tip: Go when they've just opened to beat the crowds and get better service. Also, don't be offended when the server gives you a time ultimatum (two hours and you're out). It's just a really small place and with the commercial rent in that area, they can't afford to have customers just lingering without ordering anything more.Listed in: I'm Having a Japanese Food…

Always enjoy the taste of raw charcoal grill.
Tends to over-grill the meats - I like it, but some don't.

I'd been to the Main Street location, but last night was my first time at the Denman location.
When you're not eating a set menu, I'd recommend striving for a balance between their skewers and their rice or noodle bowls or salads. Their little skewers are delicious, but they don't really fill you up. I'd say the average adult would be happy with between 6 and 10 skewers. On top of that, add one of their rice bowls, noodle bowls, or salads per person and you are good to go. -
Review from Miss H.
This was our first stop. I really love yakitori, but for some reason in SF, we don't have any really good places. Yakitori Totto in NYC is our go to place and our bar we used to compare others, which is unfair, but we know how good it can be.
Zakkushi just didn't cut it. The flavours, textures, seasoning, and sauces were all a miss. -

Bah. I dunno. I'm all over grilled meats. Any day, any time. But for what it was, it could have been better. I think the greasiness through me off. I mean if you're on a grill, i should not be able to use the meat as lip balm.
The shoju was good and all in all we had a good time, but for meat on a stick, i was hoping for something more satiating. -

I love Izakayas; and coming from Toronto where we only have a handful of places, Izkayas that do not require a lineup of 2 hours are certainly a welcoming sight.
Must try - their Yaki Onigiri. I know it's just grill rice, but if you like textures, that that ball of rice is for you :) Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Could eat 10 of them if I didn't have everything else to try.
Tried a few of their wasabi dishes and did not come out disappointed. Very fresh wasabi and the meat was cooked just right as well. Wish they'd use a sheet form of nori for the tako-wasabi to give it a crunchier texture; that's probably my only comment out of everything they serve up there.
Great place to take friends to unwind on a Friday evening. -

Yum....many delicious meats on sticks including sticky rice, beef tongue and quail eggs. Great atmosphere, yakitori goodness.
Service is slow not for those in a rush but worth the wait. -
Review from Jason T.
Wow... not a thing on the menu involving scary caterpillar shaped monstrosities.
I'm in Japan pretty regularly, and the only strange thing about this place was that the menu was in English and the restaurant has the usual North American tipping custom. Other than that, the food, pricing and atmosphere were nearly indistinguishable from a standard urban izakaya or kushiyaki spot in Japan. Even the ratio of Japanese guests to non-Japanese guests seemed pretty much the same.
I dug the yamaimo with ume vinegar, and the mentaiko udon was really nice (I omitted the pork, sorry) . Hiromi had a bunch of organ meats, of course, and a little chicken. Thumbs up from her, too.
Very nice! I'd do it again. -

Huh??? Why so few reviews for Zakkushi? This is a pretty bold statement, but Zakkushi is my favourite restaurant in Vancouver. Their yakitori reminds me of Yakitori Alley in Tokyo with that fragrant smokey charcoal smell that seeps into your clothes. You'll smell like you've been hanging out by a campfire by the end of the night! Their skewers are cheap, they're cooked right in front of you, and all of the other izakaya like items on the menu are awesome too! The tsukune is pretty tasty, but my favourite item on the menu is the grilled onigiri... Not sure what's in their yakitori sauce, but I'm pretty sure it's heroine! Mmm.....

Review from Ryan C.
Yakitori yea! The slow service and long wait is worth it for these delicious skewers. You wait, and wait, and wait...and think that they've forgotten about your order, but when it comes, oh boy. The daikon salad was really great, but we were kind of disappointed with the mountain yam. The octopus special took an especially long time but that was delicious too. The simple skewers are probably better than the ones gussied up with mochi.
The price is a little high and you will never find parking close-by, but otherwise it's quite a fun place to eat. -

2/13/2009. Visited one of my favorite spots in Vancouver over the weekend. The trip across I-5 and through the border was absolute hell on a Friday night but thinking about the meal to come waned my road rage.
We had a party of 6 and as always the good people at Zakkushi delivered the ingredients for an amazing night of delicious food, excellent and friendly service, and bottomless steins of beer.
To expedite things, we wrote down our order and handed it to our waitress. I'm not sure if it was the first time she'd been given an order in paper or if it was the shock in seeing the sheer quantity of food we ordered, but her facial expression was timeless. "Baka American-jin!" =P All-good!
Skewers came throughout our stay. I was a little disappointed that our order of Liver came towards the end, as I was looking forward to it the most when we were seated. Next time I'll ask to get it first.
This trip, I remembered to pull out the camera. Check the pics, wipe the drool off your keyboard and be prepared to make a reservation now!
Thanks for the Biiru the following evening my friend! It was really appreciated! I owe you big time! Arigato ne, tomodachi!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

After a pitcher of Sapporo and some great food, I think both of us agree that this was one of the most entertaining dining experiences we have had in years. The wait staff was awesome and the people watching was pretty good as well. If you are looking for a quiet, well-behaved meal, go elsewhere. If you don't mind lots of noise, and you are looking for some good yakitori, then this is your destination. The party really got going around/after last call the night we were there. We'll definitely be back the next time we make it up to Vancouver.

The robata here is quite good. My favorites are the ninniku memaki (garlic tops and pork), mochimaki (pork and sticky rice), the gyu tan (beef tongue), and the p-toro (fatty pork). Many of their other dishes are quite good as well. Their daikon salad is good, and their yakitori don special can be a light meal in and of itself, especially if you're eating on the cheap (make sure to get the special one, with the egg).

A small but authentic yakitori bar on Denman street. The food quality and presentation matches up with my experiences with various yakitori places in Ginza (formal) and Shimokitazawa (casual). Their prices are reasonable and actually cheaper comparing with what we pay here in San Francisco. Be adventurous and try different things besides the skewers.

Oh man, I can't believe I found this restaurant. Went here 3 or 4 years back when we visited Seattle and decided we would drive to Vancouver as well. I'm drooling just thinking about the different Yakitori skewers here. I've never had ANYTHING like it afterwards (in the US that is). But of course nothing beats Japan. But this is just like how they make it in Japan. Super authentic. The mochi wrapped pork is to die for! So is the tebasaki. All skewers are sauce or salt, mmmm...yummy! They also use REAL wooden charcoal which gives it wonderful flavor.
I also don't think this place is all that expensive since I pay about $2.5-5 US PER Skewer here in the bay area for crappy tasting yakitori. In total, dinner here for two cost around $55 CAD including tip. That includes so many skewers we were stuffed, some onigiris and soba noodles. But looking @ the menu again, I could see how one could spend lots of $$$$ here. -

This is definitely the Zakkushi to go to out of the three locations. I go to Zakkushi weekly and have not been disappointed. They maintain prompt service, even when the restaurant is busy, and their food is always fresh. I must also commend the chef for cutting off the parts of burnt food from grilling the skewers. It really helps a lot in making the food not so bitter.
I highly recommend the Cheese Mochi Maki (sticky rice wrapped with pork and topped with a slice of mozzerella cheese), but beware because it is extremely stringy, but definitely worth it.
Oh, ps. make a reservation if you are planning to eat here. It can get extremely busy and you may not always get seats right away if you were to simply walk in and ask for one.
Enjoy! -

not bad, everything we ordered was okay. what stood out for me and the GF was the negitoro rolls, fresh, light and tasty. not much else to say so Imma post up a bunch of pics. if you don't love cheese don't order the menu items with cheese, they layer that shit on thick.
