Review from Njeri S.
My husband and I chanced upon this place when we realized the Nandos across the street was closed for the night. We were disappointed about that, but never mind, we seem to have stumbled upon a gem in it's own right. We were only looking to snack, so we had the baba ganoush and the hummus with green tahini, and both were amazing served with pipping hot fresh pita, that I can only imagine is made on premise.
The owner was courteous, friendly, and seemed to know many a patron who walked though his door. Glad we were able to partake!! -

I am a total fan of the hummus this place serves. Having lived in the Middle East for years, I always shudder at the thought of eating hummus in Vancouver. But not here. The hummus with felafel is very authentic and filling.
One downside is that they are always out of the shwarma or any meat options. Maybe time to change the menu. -

This place seems to have broken the curse of the location - business after business occupying the space and going belly up within a matter of months (sometimes even less).
I'm happy they've been doing well enough to stick around; my first couple visits when they first opened were less than impressive, and I hadn't been back for about a year.
I'm glad I came back. Since my last visit they've introduced a falafel plate that effectively solves the issues I had last year when you could only order two falafels as an add-on to the hummus; in a pita sandwich (that didn't wow me) or as 5 falafel balls, alone. The first time I ordered a soup and an order of falafels, I assumed that the falafels would come with a bit of hummus, or tahini, or pickle, or, I dunno...something! But they didn't. As amazing as their falafels are, eating them dry is not that enjoyable.
This new plate comes with 5 falafels, hummus, two pitas, taboule, salad and pickles. At $8.95 plus tax, it's a filling and super healthy lunch. This isn't the only thing that has changed in their menu - they've eliminated the beef dishes and the labaneh (I assume in an effort to adhere to Kosher standards) and they've added some dishes that look interesting - I'll have to try the burekas next time for sure.Listed in: Davie Street - the best (and…, Get yer vegan on

* Great Kosher Israeli snack bar *
Israeli food is not very widespread in Vancouver, with only a few little spots. Zaatar is now added to the list, with its Kosher kitchen dishing out some very authentic tasting Israeli casual food.
The hummus was superb. It had just the right consistency, and had a nice plating with whole chickpea in the centre, some bits of parsley, a sprinkle of paprika, and a generous amount of olive oil. I took the option to add some falafel as well, and they were freshly made after ordering - none of that microwaved falafel crap that most pita spots around town do. They were crispy on the outside and softer inside. Delicious. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The pita was also excellent. It reminded me of the pita that used to be available at a place called Pita Star before their very sad change in ownership and quality: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
I'm not sure where Zaatar is sourcing its pita - but I'd like to know. They taste fresh, unlike the cardboard that passes for pita at many places around town. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
This spot could get a 5th star if the service behind the counter was just a little bit smoother. I was there on the weekend and I'm guessing it wasn't the usual staffing. I suppose I'll find out on my next visit (and there will be one for sure!).Listed in: Vancouver Middle Eastern Food

Review from Charly S.
I'm a regular here and I'm disappointed to say they're doing something different with their hummus.... it is not the delicious bowl of amazement it used to be. It's still good, but I am certainly revoking my previous comments about it being the best. It's average now. The management seems to be making some changes, which is OK, I can handle change - but please return the hummus to it's former glory. Oh, and sweep the floors more often it's getting a tad icky in the afternoon.
The falafel are still fantastic, way above average and the service is friendly and helpful. The food continues to be fresh and good, and we will return but I'm still sad about the hummus.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Green tahini , 2x green tea and small baba ghanoush under $12.
That is what I wrote on my i phone.
This is what I wrote on my computer at home, just now.
Wow! As you enter the place you get wafted with the smells of the mediterranean.
It was fantastic!
We had also just found out that they recently became Kosher and some of the previous dishes they were able to offer can't offer anymore. But not to worry.
The Hummous is still fantastic.
We had the Green tahini (wee bit salty), a small baba ghanoush (yummy garlicy) and two green teas for under $12 and it was just enough food to hit the spot while we waited for our main event. (and sadly a bad contrast to the great vibrant food that we had here.)
Almost 5 stars, because the cauliflower wasn't available yet and the Challa bread (whole wheat) wasn't available. I've always wanted to try Whole Wheat Challa breat.
I wasn't sure that was possible.
The food was very good, and it was a great time to catch up and chit chat with my Nihon compadre. You could really enjoy an after noon snack here.
The couple that sat next to us seemed to be really enjoying their Falafel Pita pockets, which I'll have to try the next time I'm here again.
My body thanked me for having this food.
It's good food for the body and it's very high in quality.
It was a reminder of what I should eat more of, and less of that meat!
** it is Kosher and it is food from the Israel region, which I love!Listed in: Taste Bud Tinglers, Healthier Food options

I tried out Zaatar today because there was a special $1 for $20 lunch Groupon Now! voucher for Zaatar. I was happy that they accepted my Groupon with zero frills. I had also purchased another $1 voucher for another restaurant. However, when I called to make a reservation, that restaurant said Groupon made a mistake and that they did not agree to the voucher. Anyhow, I'm glad things worked out for Zaatar at least given the awesome deal!
The girl working at Zaatar was super friendly. I asked for her recommendations and she recommended the original hummus. I ended up ordering The Bomb (hummus with Tahini, ground beef and falafel for $12.95) as well as the original hummus (chickpeas, parsley, and olive oil for $6.95). Both were served with pita breads.
The pita bread had the right texture: it wasn't burnt or super hard like ones I've had in the past. The two falafels in The Bomb were good and not too greasy. I was surprised by how much left over hummus I had. I would characterize the quantity as "party size." I was only able to finish a quarter of the hummus in the container. The Bomb definitely had a lot more flavor than the original hummus, but it was also more expensive ($12.45 vs $6.95). The original hummus was still good.
Their menu also notes that you can ask them to make it spicy.
I took about 5 days to finish the two containers hummus. A lil' bit of hummus every day... -

I also bought the $1 Groupon - it was the perfect opportunity to try a restaurant I have been curious about. The gal working at the front was SO nice!
I placed an to go order of the Hummus topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions, the Green Tahnini Dip and large Classic Mediterranean Salad - the dips came with two pitas. The pitas were fluffy and served warm. Yum. My bill came to just over $20, so with tip I think I paid about $5, plus the $1 for the Groupon. Can't beat that!! The food was really good - the salad was fresh and tangy, just how I like it. Unfortunately, they accidentally put my Hummus and Tahini dip in the same container (Tahini on top of the hummus), so I can't say what they taste like separately. However, what I did taste was really delicious! I think I would prefer them separated next time though. I think my only complaints would be that it would be nice if their menu had a few more options, especially in terms of dinner foods because I'm not a big fa of Falafel, and next time I would ask them not to put extra olive oil on the hummous.
I still have about half a of the container of dip left, and I've bee eating it for 2 days now...which is great because I eat hummus about once a day anyways with my raw veggies.
