    Calgary, AB

    3.0 star rating

First of all, I would like to give a shout-out to the YWCA at large. The work they have done for Calgary is immeasurable, in providing programs for families and shelter for women. They have helped to combat homelessness, to crack down on domestic violence and to combat poverty at large. Five stars for the YWCA's work with the community.

My review is actually on Fitness on Fifth, the health and wellness aspect of the YWCA. It included fitness facilities, training rooms and a pool for a relatively low student price. It was the closest gym to my house at the time, so I decided to go for it.

Fitness on Fifth and all of its fitness facilities are kept relatively separate from the main building. There were several price points to choose for membership - with the health club being the most luxurious and the most expensive and the basic offering locker rooms reminiscent of my high school.

The fitness facilities weren't bad though they were fairly small. There was a big free weight section, several bikes, treadmills with TVs and a couple ellipticals. They were kept pretty clean, and most of the equipment was fairly new. It wasn't the best gym and it wasn't the worst.

My only beef was the lack of scheduled classes in the evening. I wish that they had had more selection more times, although this complaint belies the fact that it was a small gym.

Overall, Fitness on Fifth felt a little like the little gym that could. It wasn't quite up to par with the executive gyms but it probably worked just as well.
