I really don't know why I haven't come here sooner. I wish I knew but there is just so much competition in Richmond, you just never know what is good so this place was just 'another Japanese restaurant' in my books.. until now.
So I came here today for the first time since I was strolling around looking for lunch and their large menu in the window caught my eye since it was extensive and they had Ramen (plus rice dishes, udon, DESSERTS, a large assortment of drinks) etc! Anyway, I love ramen and I am not really picky with it either. So this is what I got and it was pretty darn good, not over-salted like most ramens in town.
They left out the corn from both mine and my dining companion but they apologized and gave us a reasonable portion of corn to toss into our noodles. It was an honest mistake and it happens.
I came back for dinner (because it wasn't disappointing the first time) and had the udon noodles which was very good. And there was an endless supply of tea! I really hate getting charged for tea at ramen joints because that stuff makes you bloody thirsty and I really don't need the $2 tea bag, thank you.. just give me the diluted stuff.
If I wasn't leaving town, I would make this a regular food stop. Prices are reasonable, service is above average (for Richmond), the bathroom was clean, and the food hasn't disappointed me yet. PS. Cash Only. -

Kinda between this and 4 stars since it's worth going back for good casual comfort food, w/ friends in a casual atmosphere, unlike Pearl Castle a few stores down where it's just mayhem there lol.
The pan fried udon was good, served in a metal skillet propped on a wooden plank... but looking forward to their dessert parfaits next time. Strawberry shortcake and this chocolately/caramel pics seemed enticing but i'm on a diet.
though it's a big parking plaza at continental here, it can be crazy. -

Yuu Japanese Tapas is a small restaurant that offers a lot of variety of contemporary Japanese cuisine in a relaxing atmosphere. Their menu offers wide selection of delicious appetizers, mini hotpots, okonomiyaki, donburi and signature Richmond ramen. For those that have a sweet tooth, they serve parfaits and bubble tea, coffee/lattes, slushes and smoothies. Their ramen has more or a fusion flare than your traditional ramen found at G-Men or Kintaro.
Take for example this Kimchi Seafood with Jumbo Scallop ramen in tomato Tonkatsu broth $11.99. The broth is nutty and tangy made of tonkatsu stock and plentiful of miso yellow and red miso together. A bit spicy with giant prawn and scallops but you can taste the frozenness of the seafood. The noodles itself wasn't much, it was not very al dente and may not be filling enough if you are hungry.
Pan Fried Yakisoba - this came in a generous sized mini wok and had Japanese styled BBQ pork, vegetables and some seaweed for garnish. This was enough to share at a reasonable price of $8.99.
Given that it is located in the same mall (Continental Plaza) as Gyo-O, Pearl Castle and Deer Garden, I'm not sure I find great value in a bowl of ramen at $11.99. I can easily hope over to Gyo-O or even over to G-Men on Alexandra for a quality ramen. Speaking of which I am getting a little bit thirsty! Seems to me MSG is at play. It has to be the culprit since I did not drink much of the soup. -

We tried this place as an alternative to the usual Japanese fare, sushi.
This is a small place in a Richmond Asian strip mall. Parking is available out front and the place looked clean and inviting from the outside. Inside a big screen TV streams a Japanese cooking show for your entertainment.
We started with some appetizers, gyozas on a hot plate. They were good, but nothing special. Then each of us ordered different meals. I had a rice dish with chicken cutlets. It was all white meat, battered and deep fried. On the side was a serving of onions, niblets corn and an egg. Others had Ramen and Hotpot. You could also choose from Iron plate Teppan or noodle dishes.
The Ramen smelled very good and the broth was very creamy and tasty. The secret to the broth is the butter that they put into it. Butter makes everything better. You can get extra ramen for additional charge.
The Tonkatsu hot pot came with meat on the bones and is something for those who are accustomed to dealing with bones in their food. My lovely wife loves this kind of stuff and she commented that it was good.
Service was good with regular fill ups on your tea. Although we did not have dessert they have an extensive menu that we will try next time. PS. Cash only. -

I was there this evening and ordered Miso Ramen (RM5). I ate about 3/4 of it and then noticed a piece of steel wool (likely came out from a steel wool brush for cleaning pots) in it. Told the server about it. Was offered to have another new one made but I declined as I almost finished the other one. Then was offered ice cream which I didn't take, wasn't in the mood for it. Was given 10% off on the bill and she said she was sorry about it, and said she notified the kitchen staff. I said whatever happened could sometimes happened. I left the bowl there without finishing it off.
Now, 10% off is probably a big deal in a Chinese run restaurant for something wrong in the food. But in many other places, (like a mid class or above western cuisine), they will likely take the item off the bill completely, or offer a dessert (Yuu actually has a long dessert menu, just that I wasn't offered anything other than an ice cream.).
I go there about once a week and they probably recognize me by now.
Well, overall at least the staff seems nice so I only take 1 star off as an update.
Also, one of their servers was kinda funny. She walked by asking if I was ready for order, and I said yes. Instead of coming back right away (because she had something in her hands), she went over to clean up another table. 2 other servers were standing around near the back area chatting. Only the first one saw my table later did she remember that she was supposed to take the order and came over. I don't blame her but I guess she's not born to have the hospitality mindset.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Edward L.
Japanese places in Richmond are a dime a dozen. We decided to give this place a try.
Parking is available in the lot in front, but it fills up. If it's packed, there are more spots around the corner (look in the area by the "side" of the building).
The place was about 1/2 full tonight. People came and went. There were several couples here whose idea of a hot date was tapping away on their smartphones. Pretty amusing, and only in Richmond..
There was a Japanese showing some TV drama, but they played Japanese pop music in the background instead.
Service was a bit scarce, but they got their job done.
The tonkatsu ramen was mediocre. Not saying it was bad, but it was nothing special. The seaweed it came with was quite soggy, and the pork slices were nothing to brag about. The portion size was reasonable though. With that said, $10 for a ramen isn't exactly a bargain.
However, 2 dishes are worthy of mention:
A4 hot pot of clams - this was ridiculously good. All about the sauce. I don't know what it is, but it's probably the best clams I've had in any restaurant (including the high-end ones), bar none.
A21 beef steak chunks on iron skillet - a little bit too salty, but really tender chunks. Kind of expensive at $9 though. -

Been back several more times for lunch and I'm really liking this place. Consistency of the food is always there, so I'm sure I'll get something good each time.
I still get the butter ramen, because it's just that good. I really like the big pieces of pork that they give you. As well, the sliced cabbage and wood ear mushroom adds texture to the dish. Oh, and how could I forget about the fresh garlic!
Other yummy snacks include the chicken karrage, takoyaki, and the spring rolls. All are made to order, and always good.
Hot green tea served, good service. I can't complain.Listed in: Ra Ra Ramen...

Also known as "the butter ramen" place for some of us. The broth is awesome! So awesome, I always finish the broth before I even touch the ramen, pork, half soft boiled egg, and the veggies in the bowl. Very filling. For a little garlic flavor, it comes a side of chopped garlic and garlic press to test your hand grip strenght.
The oden (half boiled egg, daikon radish, and fish cakes), served in a small nabemono with a much clearer flavored broth is also awesome. Perfect comfort food for a cold day/night. Comes with a bowl of rice and side dishes. The sides consist of edamame, black fungus, and some pickled veg.
The Japanese hamburger with ponzu sauce is also a dish to try. I find the ponzu sauce compliments the hamburger patty well. It comes with 2 shrimp tempura, broccoli, and fries on a sizzling hot plate. It also comes with the usual side dish,
Must have appys, the fried boneless chicken (chicken karaage with a slice of lemon) or takoyaki (5).Listed in: Family Friendly Places

Thanks Vincci & Larry for this find!! Good miscellaneous Japanese restaurant .. some izakaya items, ramen, udon, Japanese desserts.
Comfortable seating with entertaining Japanese food shows on the flat screen TV. Extensive drink menu that I didn't try out - too cold! I stuck to the complimentary tea.
We had the fried potatoes with home-made sauce = potato mayo! It's the same sauce they use for Ebi Mayo. I noticed that they also provide catering platters and this was one of the items on it. Tasty, but I wish the potatoes could have been crispier.
I also had the meat-sauce noodles. I think it's described as ground pork, miso sauce. I liked it - it's ramen noodles served Taiwanese style. A bit of pickled ginger adds to the experience. It's not a huge portion, but definitely decent.
I also liked how they served fresh cloves of garlic with your own garlic press with the ramen noodles. -

UPGRADED MENU !!!! A much better dining experience!
Yuu was formerly a 2-3, but they have upgraded their menu and this is a much IMPROVED place to go.
I recently had their Kimchi Seafood Ramen and it was downright tasty, fresh ingredients, generous portions of seafood. BRAVO!
To management:
What's with their Iron Chef Elite Japanese cooking videos playing non-stop? Are tyou trying to make us think that's what's happening in the kitchen????? On the shows they are always making something I'm wishing I could ORDER IN YOUR RESTAURANT!!!! STOP BEING SO PRETENTIOUS. Either make what's playing, or put something else on. -

Nice to have another Japanese Tapas and cafe in Richmond. Big flat TV for Japanese food shows and make you craving for tapas more....
Excellent atmosphere, along with friendly waitresses who wont hesitate to help you with choices.
I had ramen ( BBQ pork, half egg, corn, black wood ear mushroom and bamboo), it was tasty but not as good as next door (G-men).
I probably will go back with a group of friend and try out more. -

Uh Oh.........
Whe we came here, it was about half full. When we left it was packed.
6:30 ish was our entry time.
Tonights feature review was based on my co-diner, who considers herself the expert on Hamburger steak.
Tonights meal review for her was not very friendly. The staff was pleasant, but she had doubts about my reviews and thus wanted to see for herself if what I was writing about was true.
I did write about the Hamburger steak meal and to be fair, tonights meal didn't look like the meal that I had the last time. There were things missing and her burger was dry and tough and too dense.
She wanted to give it a 1 star out of 5. Sorry.
I chose to try to Oden. It was ok, but the broth wasn't hot like the other hot pots I've tried here.
And it was missing that dab of mustard that you always get with Oden.....
I was thinking the chef who usually cooks during weekdays wasn't here today. Yeah, that could be it.
Tonight just seemed like the food was passing off for Japanese.
Not quite up to it's regular fare.
And considering that the chef/owner worked in Japan for many years and knows the Japanese flavours, I hope it was just an off night for them.
It doesn't matter who owns or runs or cooks the food, but if it's going to say Japanese, then it has to have the right Japenese flavour. (a direct quote from the little missy herself)............(don't shoot the messenger).2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

GOOD not Great...
I've eaten here a few times to know its consistently good but not great.
This restaurant has good 3/5 food and fair-good service. Cash only!
I'm really confused about the Big flat TV with the same perpetual running Japanese food shows? Is this to say - yes we support fine Japanese cooking and we are very clever for showing this because you will experience the same care, creativity an attention you are watching on the tv in our restaurant (NOT!), or is this to show you what you are missing by eating at this restaurant, because what you are served in no way resembles what you are watching on TV!?!
I discovered this restaurant by accident as GMen next door never seems to be open, so I stumbled into this restaurant.
I notice other reviewers generously are giving this place 4 stars - which it aint. 3- 3.5 at best -

Came with Larry L. a couple of times, had the Shio ramen. Broth was tasty, and it came with my favourite condiment, Garlic In A Press! Mmmm...nothing better than fresh garlic that you can squeeze all that fresh garlicky taste out. We also had gyoza and karaage, both were well prepared. Honestly? I don't have any negative things to say about this place to even this review out a bit. Like the rating says, "Yay! I'm a fan!"

This place's service is horrible. They took the wrong order and try to convince us that it was correct. Also they kept saying I was wrong and she was right. Good luck going there.
