Review from Garth C.
When it comes to the arts I know I'm out of my element. I am not the least bit artistic nor do I have any eye for art, for that reason I have a lot of appreciation for artists.
Yukon Artists at Work is all about the artists and the things they create. It's not located in a place that you would expect to find an art gallery, on one side of the street is construction workshop and next door is a gym so this is easily classified as a diamond in the rough.
The Yukon is an interesting place. It's a town where the isolation can either drive people like me insane or become a source of creative inspiration. Here in this gallery you can see the results of numerous artists who call the Yukon their home.
The thing that really sets this gallery apart is the fact that this place is run by artists, they are there during the day working on their next masterpiece. I might not know much about art but I always find the story behind the artists work just fascinating.
So even if you know nothing about art it's still worth coming here, great spot to pick up original creative gifts or some new decorations for you home. There are things here that fit all price ranges and it's nice to know the money is going directly to the artist. -
Review from Peter S.
For my 150th review I decided to write about something really cool and slightly off the beaten track.
I know the Yukon is a bit out of the way for many Yelpers, but if you ever make it up to my old stomping grounds you have to stop in at the Yukon Artists at Work gallery ten minutes south of Whitehorse.
If you love art, this will easily be one of the highlights of your Northern adventure. And if you think art is... just art... you still won't regret a visit here. YAAW is definitely a lot different than your typical gallery, especially the ones in town. It is run by the artists themselves, and each day there is usually a different artist working in the gallery. It feels more like someones house here, and it is nice to be able to chat with local artists doing what they love. No hoity toity attitude here, this is the north damn it. It's hard to be stuck up when you are constantly humbled by the surrounding wilderness!
Every time I have stopped in for a quick look, I have left with at least one beautiful painting to remind myself why I love the north. My favorite artist by far is Stephanie Ryan, we have quite a collection in the works.
There is a new addition next door called the Copper Moon Gallery, and I suspect that it is as good as YAAW.
