I searched google and yelp for different salons nearby UCSD, and Aveda seemed the best choice for me. The customer service was great from the beginning to end and I was able to get a same day appointment (5/15/12) with no hassle. The only downside that it was a bit pricey for me, but you definitely get what you pay for.

My stylist was Tiffany and she was wonderful! She transformed my super long hair to a cute short shoulder cut. I made sure to talk to her about what I wanted with picture examples, any concerns I had, and asked for her feedback on which styles would fit me the best. She gave me something better than I could expect. Tiffany talked to me through the whole process making sure I was satisfied with each progression. She also styled/curled (for a small fee) my hair to the picture I shown her and gave me tips on how to do it at home. Tiffany also offers complimentary bang trims!

I would definitely go back to Tiffany and Aveda for my future hair cuts. With any stylist, just make sure you communicate or show a picture of what you are looking for.

I've been to Young Attitudes three times now during the past year and a half and have finally gotten around to writing a review now.  I started coming here due to its close proximity to where I live, and the prices were fairly reasonable for a salon.  It's located right next to Pet People in the shopping center.  The salon itself is tucked away behind the Aveda store.

My first experience here was great, and I believe my cut was with Maggie.  She did a great job with my layers and would recommend her.  I came back for a bang trim with Carly, and she also did a fantastic job.  I originally wanted Carly as my go-to stylist here, but she is extremely popular so I've decided to venture to other stylists.

The past two times, I had Lacy as my hair stylist.  I was a little hesitant with my first appointment with her as there are no reviews for her and I have no idea why.  She listened to what I wanted to do with my hair and would give me suggestions on how short to cut my hair.  Lacy sat me down first, examined my hair and asked me what I wanted to do with it.  With my last visit, she did a lovely scalp massage and it was so relaxing after work!  Afterwards, she took me to the back to shampoo and condition my hair before the cut.  The past visit I wanted to keep my length of her, and Lacy did just that.  She took off about an inch and a half of hair and reshaped my layers.  She did a fantastic job and I will definitely keep coming back to her.  I have a lot of hair, and Lacy always takes her time touching up the layers and making sure that it's even.

If you stick with the same stylist, I believe you get free bang trims in-between hair cuts, which is great if your bangs grow out quickly like mine.  For longer hair, my cut costed $50, and I tipped $10.  A bit on the expensive side, bu

I've been shaving and plucking my underarms for many years and I (finally) got fed up with it. I decided that today will be the day I experience a wax job for my underarms. I researched (yelped) the nearest and well reviewed day spas/salons.

The next morning I made the next available appointment (12:30pm) and was told that Iris will be taking care of me. I went in and maybe waited for about 5 minutes. About 15 minutes of the underarm wax job ... wam bam thank you ma'am. I was out of there by 12:50pm.

Iris was wonderful and pleasant to talk with. The 15 minutes that I was with her, was great! The wax job itself? Well, it was quick and I'm hairless ... I'm happy.

I am definitely coming back here. Well worth the money ($20.) Maybe someday I'll get adventurous and wax other parts of my body too.

The trick to this place is to get an appointment with one of their experienced stylists.

It is completely worth the extra $10-20 to book with an experienced stylist-- both times I did, I loved my haircuts, and the service was top-notch (to the point where I look forward to getting my hair cut).

When I tried to save a few dollars and book with one of their less experienced stylists, I was severely unimpressed with both the haircut and the service. The inexperienced stylist didn't correctly attach the diffuser to the blow-dryer, so I had the diffuser dropped onto my head seven times.

I was too mortified to say anything at the time, and I hurried out of there. In hindsight, it's pretty funny, but not something I want to have happen every time I get my hair trimmed.

Moral of the story: pay the extra cash to book an experienced stylist.

I got my haircut with Cynthia and I have to tell everyone that it was the best haircut I have ever had in my entire life. If you want something that is trendy and edgy but subtle, Cynthia is the best. For the first time in my life, I felt like a hairstylist took time to do my hair and make sure I was comfortable. She took my hair (that was so long, it went to my lower back), and transformed it into a really cute and groomed haircut. Also, they don't charge you up the butt for the quality of the stylist so I got a great price for my haircut.

I will go back again and make Cynthia my permanent hairstylist because I was very impressed with Cynthia.. I even trust her to color my hair in the future.

    Yay!

Always a treat just to walk in and smell that Aveda natural fragrance. It brings me back to 1996... I used Shampure like it was perfume! I think I took 3 showers just so I freshly smell like it! Lol
And it's so nice to get a free personal spray every year from then without purchase... I always use it for my car, it relaxes me while in traffic.

i asked one of my friends who colors her hair a lot for a recommendation on where to go because i wanted to go try something fun (before i can't anymore). soo she recommended aveda and specifically patrick.

i first scheduled a consultation with him; very easy to schedule. he was extremely easy to converse with, very honest, and clearly knew what looked good. i felt very comfortable after my consult and excited for my new hair!

i scheduled my actual coloring ~2 weeks later. he still rememered everything about me, which was awesome. i was getting purple streaks on my asian dark hair. he took great care of everything to keep it all neat, tasteful, but still fun. he talked just the right amount too -- not toooooo talkative but definitely able to hold a conversation. i also got a hand massage, which was nice. annnd i asked for a slightly bluer purple, and he gave it to me even though he said that the color company said not to mix colors.

basically, pretty awesome! i love it. he also tacked on a haircut just cause. and somehow my cost (~$100) ended up being way under what he quoted for me originally ($150), which was awesome! it just shows they aren't money mongers.

my roommate also went to patrick and had a great experience too. would highly recommend! :)

After moving to La Jolla for school, this place has become my regular haircut place! The staff is so friendly! They give you a courtesy call every time before your appointment. And they serve you tea or water while you wait. I highly recommend Carly- she is very attentive and cuts your hair exactly how you want it. We have fun gossiping about stuff that happens in our lives too haha

Overall, I had an okay experience at Young Attitudes and will likely return.

    Pros:
--I liked my haircut (from Megan).
--The stylist was easy to communicate with, and she didn't push any products on me.
--The guy at front desk was polite and friendly.
--I was offered beverage while I waited (although it never came).
--The wait was short after I arrived at my appointment time.
--20% off coupons are available for first time clients. The prices vary depending on the experience level of the stylist. Haircuts for women start at $40.

    Cons:
--I had my appointment scheduled at the same time as my friend. Young Attitudes called to cancel my friend's appointment 30 min beforehand with some nonsense excuse. When my friend called back and talked to a different employee, he/she gave her an entirely different explanation for the last minute cancellation. In the end, my friend couldn't get the stylist that she had originally booked and she had to wait about 45 min past her appointment time. I was nearly done with my haircut by the time she got started.  (Minus one star for the hassle.)
--Waiting area is a little cramped.
    --Salon was stuffy (hot).

The front desk staff are amazing. They're super sweet and courteous, and we're overall very welcoming. After telling them my name and appointment time, they offered me a beverage and took me into the hair-area of the store to wait for my stylist.

The good things kind of end there, though.

The "waiting area," was messy as hell. There was hair all over the ground in that area. I understand I'm in a hair salon, and there's bound to be hair on the ground, but there were no stylist stations anywhere near the waiting area. It was obvious that what was on the ground there, had probably been there for awhile.

The rest of my haircut included:

    - A rather condescending consultation - for a variety of reasons.
    - An awkward scalp massage that resembled someone trying to give my scalp a happy ending. (Seriously, miss - slow it down. There is no need to rub my head that vigorously.)
    - An awkward shampoo/conditioning experience that left shampoo and water in my eyes / face.
    - A full haircut in about 15 minutes.
    - A post-haircut rinse that also left me with water in my face / eyes.

At the end of all this, did I get a good haircut? No, actually. Not at all. My hair is noticeably longer on one side of my head than the other.

    Not returning.

I used to go see Patrick here and he always did a fantastic job. He would also do my girlfriends hair too, and her hair always looked amazing when he was done. I stopped going here to cut costs, and after going to a barber in the area for a few months I popped in to get a haircut because my barber was closed. Megan cut my hair tonight and did an amazing cut. When I left I realized I just need to start coming back.
I always leave here very happy. So I'll be coming back regularly again :)

my hair is straight medium-thick black layered hair with dry ends as i have not had a trim in over 7 months. I shampoo and condition my hair and i always blowdry.

I needed a trim/fix layers. I had "awkward" layers because i had a car accident a year ago and it chopped off a chunk of hair (down to the scalp) at the back of my head. So after a year, it grows out and it makes my volume look uneven. My hair is also side-parted so it's thicker on one side than the other. I also had bangs that were growing out and started to look awkward too.

MAGGIE worked on my hair and i was her last customer on Thanksgiving Sunday. She was cheerful and still gave me some upbeat energy.

She washed my hair thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner, made the rinsing clean and didn't get my face wet. She put some product in my hair to smooth it out before she took the clippers and razors to it. She started trimming the longest and lowest layers and worked her way up in small locks at a time. She was precise and made my long bangs blend into the shorter layers at the front of my face. they're still long enough to pull behind my ears, not long enough to pull up to a pony-tail. Then she asked, "How does it feel?" my head was still wet, so i didn't know what to say other than "Wet." Kind of a weird question at first but I do appreciate her asking before she went on to the drying and styling.

She uses a really powerful blow dryer with one of those caps/nozzles that  funnels and aims the hot air to dry each layer of hair. With one hand she holds the hair dryer and in the other she holds the cylinder brush to pull and fold inwards. That way my hair dries with a little curve at the bottom. When she was all done with the layers my hair felt so soft.

So I had new layers. I think they look a little more distinct, semi-jagged, semi-elegant, and soooo soft. I was very satisfied. $40 usually, first timers it's 20% off.

I don't know a lot of salons and i don't get a new style (never bleached, permed, dyed my hair before) so those of you who know lots of salons may think my ratings are higher.

Products: They didn't try to sell me anything but i really liked it, i kind of wish they did tell me more about it, as i might have bought the product that had the smooth finishing before she blowdried my hair.
Parking: plenty of space in the plaza parking, just go when it's not busy like lunch times.
Place: hard to find, it's inside Aveda. It's clean, relaxed, spacious, smells fresh, very laid back, it's la jolla without the snobby-ness.
Other workers: I saw a few other ladies working on other customers and all of them looked great. I would trust any of them to work on my hair.

I have followed my esthetician, IRIS MATA over to Young Attitudes! The place is super inviting and in a great location! You can easily go get your hair/Facial/Waxing and then get a coffee next door! First of all, Iris is an incredibly sweet Lady! From the minute you arrive she makes you feel incredibly comfortable! You can tell that she truly loves her job. It's her passion. I have been to people who seem to rush through the service and so I can say that Iris really does take her time to make sure you are perfectly happy. She gives an incredible Facial (both relaxing and for treatments) I also get my brows done by her and not only do they look great, but they seem to last a long time! Iris, hands down is the best!

She has been doing hair for many years and seems to have a lot of experience

I got my haircut with Tarah. I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted, but she listened my ideas and gave some helpful input and I really liked the results. She was on time and very reasonably priced. Also, she trims the bangs (takes about 5 minutes) for free between haircuts.

The salon itself was very nice, as well. I was a little skeptical about going to a salon in a strip-mall type setting, but, I was very pleasantly surprised! Plus, the location is awesome: perfect for students or staff/faculty at UCSD and the surrounding areas. Appointments are really easy to get, too!!

    Highly recommended.

Complementary beverages would have gotten it 5 stars ;)

Pros: Clean, friendly, you can always get an appt, good products

Cons: very inexperienced girls working there.

Specifically, I saw a girl who was "more expensive because she is more experienced" but couldn't change my hair color. After making an appt to change my red hair back to blonde (yes, I told them this over the phone) I arrived to have her tell me that there was no way we could get it done that day. She told me my hair was too damaged and would need a correction ($100/hr, no guarantee on how long that would take.)

I ended up having her touch up my roots with more red since I needed SOMETHING done and left. I ended up going to Lindsey at Salon Texture who scoffed at YA's analysis and fixed my hair completely. She told me the condition of my hair wasn't bad, and it feels GREAT now, despite YA's advice that it would all break if she added highlights.

Overall, it's an alright salon if you need something simple done. The price is decent and the staff is all very friendly. I just think overall the girls don't have as much experience. It seems to be a trend with Aveda salons, unfortunately.

I've been coming to Young Attitudes since 2007. My first stylist was Jeremy, who worked miracles on my over processed hair. He got it back in shape and gave me a great new style. Jeremy has since moved away (boo hoo), but at his recommendation I started seeing Jacque. She's the best! For the first time, I have a haircut that's 1) truly me, 2) easy to style 3) looks great even if I don't have time to blow dry. It's so nice to trust your stylist enough to relax and enjoy the pampering rather than worrying if they are going to butcher your head. I'm confident that any of the stylists can do a great job and would feel comfortable going to any of them if Jacque wasn't available.

I also like that they don't push products. Even the best salon experience can be ruined if you feel obligated to buy things you don't really want or get the hard sell at the end.

This is a place you can walk into and be assured that you'll get expert service. Everyone is professional, friendly, knows their products and services and provides you with a relaxing experience. I always walk out feeling beautiful.

Update 6/26/11 - Jacque gave me a new haircut on Wednesday. Right after I was in line at Aaron Brothers and the lady behind me said "Excuse me, where do you get your hair cut?" Of course I was happy to tell her that she was just a few doors down from the best stylists in San Diego.

It is an amazing feeling to completely trust your hairdresser.

I first came to this salon when I wanted to stop highlighting my hair blonde and go back to my natural darker shade. I was nervous, but Jacque worked her color magic and I LOVED the end result. She made the transition so easy!

I don't color my hair anymore but for haircuts, Carly is my girl! She is the best!!! She has helped me go short, grow it back out, and best of all she has taught me some simple styling techniques so I can actually make it look good myself. So glad I found her! And she is so sweet, I just love her!!!

Plus I am now hooked on their products. Never thought I'd spend the extra money on salon shampoo and conditioner, but the Aveda line is so worth it!

Take note: They don't take checks!

After struggling for years with the battle of low lights vs highlights, too much protein, lack of moisture, breakage, etc.....I decided it was time to find someone who really knew about hair and cared about mine!!

I started seeing Tiffany about 9 months ago, she has turned my hair around and I couldn't be happier!!  Because of her color knowledge and overall hair expertise, I have been able to be a healthy blonde again!! The contrasting color is gorgeous, not to mention the texture. She has helped me with my home hair care maintenance as well and I actually now have both enough protein & moisture in my hair. It is very healthy, growing and glowing!! I am SO grateful  to have found Tiffany and am looking forward to years of happy hair care with her!!

Everyone in the salon is always so friendly, courteous and professional. Every appointment I have had has been convenient with my working schedule and very relaxing. If you looking for a new hair specialist or a new salon in general, I encourage to try Tiffany @ Young Attitudes for an amazing experience!!

Disclaimer: my review is based on the products only!

This is my go-to place for Aveda products. Sure, there's a real Aveda store in Fashion Valley, closer to my house, but it's so hard to get in and out of if I only need one thing.

All the girls in Young Attitudes are so nice and helpful. A long long time ago there was a biatch I encountered but I see she's not there anymore so my problem was solved before I had to squirt Rosemary Mint Conditioner on her ugly shoes.

Do you like it when people make you lie down so they can put weird gunk on your face? I do! Hey, get your mind out of the gutter, I'm referring to getting spa facials and not the other thing you were...thinking about...yeah...anyway....I'm picky about what goes on my face so it has to be Aveda products only when it comes to getting facials.

I used to come here all the time when I lived in UTC and it didn't stop me from coming here anyway when I lived in hell hole Mira Mesa, but just the other day, while I was driving to San Diego to meet up with my husband on my day off, he got me a gift certificate to come here and I was thrilled.

I always feel relaxed after my facial and usually they give me scalp massage while my mask is drying and even give me limb massage on my arms and legs and feet. It's really relaxing and everyone there is just really friendly.

You wouldn't think you would be relaxed when you see it in the plaza, but I promise you, it's worth the visit.

Moving always causes issues when you don't have your own hairdresser!

On a Saturday, I was hoping to walk-in, and get a haircut. Unfortunately, they were booked for the day. I did make an appointment for the following day so you should make an appointment!!

I was booked with Michele, or she goes by Shelly at the salon. I told her what I wanted, and didn't want. She gave me bangs, which I absolutely love, and a great haircut. Turns out, we are just alike, and she is a new friend!

I've referred Shelly and Young Attitudes to my brother, sister-in-law, and all my co-workers!

In my experience, Aveda's have always been clean and classy! Better yet, this one is near a Sprinkles cupcake!

Alan is an amazing hair stylist and if you would like amazing services, ask for him. Also, they offer a free bang trim between cuts with your original stylist (not sure if that applies to all of them).
Thats about the only nice things I have to say about this salon.

Besides Alan, I have gotten my hair cut/bang trim by other younger, less experienced girls who have done a decent job. However, some of them were super rude and definitely need an attitude check.
I think it is kind of a "thing" at this salon. They treat you as well as you look/dress. When ever I go in all dolled up, I get better service and the girls are very friendly. When I go to my appointment in rolled-out-of-bed clothes, I get the same snooty condescending attitude. It just amazes me how judgmental they can be.
Also, I went in for a perm and the girl I had my appointment with had no idea how to do it. Thus, they used the fact I was 5 min late and CANCELLED my appointment.

Been coming here for 2 years & never had a  bad haircut or an amazing one- which says a lot considering I've usually let the hair stylists go freestyle on my hair.

Though the haircuts are average- I LOVE aveda hair products- the scent is just ::: toss your head back onto a hammock& let the tropical winds slowlly lull you into a nap::: relaxing. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

ALSOOo, I appreciate that the hair stylists are all so detail-oriented (except this one middle-aged asian man, who i don't think works there anymore). ALSOo, I just recently got a hair trim from Carly & found out that she gives free bang trims between services. NO MORE DOG-CHEWED, LOPSIDED BANGS!!!

Went back to Young Attitudes this past thursday. Got another great haircut, this time from Maggie! Gave me what I didn't even know I wanted. These girls know what they're doing!

I figured since my very first review was about the Paul Mitchell School and how awful an experience it was, it would only be fair to review another salon that had a happy ending.

I first want to say that everone is very friendly and the hairstylist I had really listened to what I wanted. After having my hair butchered back in December, I had anxiety about this appointment hours leading up to it.  She did an amazing job on my hair and with the dry cutting method, it was the cleanest and most satisfying trim I have had since I am growing my hair out.

I would recommend this salon to anyone and with it being open seven days a week, you never have any issues getting an appointment.  I am excited to go back... which may be sooner than later since they do feather extensions.

    Amazing !
Phil has been cutting my hair for quite some time now. I followed him over here from another Salon and glad I did. All of the Staff is very nice and pleasant to deal with. They never pedal there wares on you and always make you feel welcome. You will be offered water or tea while you wait.
Book yourself an appointment you wont regret it, these guys really know their craft.
Every time I leave this place I am feeling like a rock star. I will be coming back here all the time,Thanks Phil C-ya in a few weeks ...

I really wanted to get a nice haircut for my birthday, and was referred to Jacque (Jackie) by two of my friends who both have amazing hair. I brought a few pictures of celeb haircuts I liked for reference. When I got there, the receptionists were SO nice, and offered me water and tea. Jacque was very friendly, and gave me great suggestions based on my face shape, lifestyle, and the images I brought in. She listened to what I wanted very well, and I'm 100% satisfied with my cut.

    Points of awesomeness:
    - Head massage. Oh. My. God. Phenomenal.
    - GORGEOUS haircut. She cut off about 7 inches and gave me a cute, slightly asymmetrical bob that's long enough to pull back for the gym, but still adorable and definitely a change...for the better, of course.
    - Yummy-smelling products.
    - No product pushing! But she did show me how to use a round brush to dry my hair to give it bounce.
    - Not a ton of chatter...I like when stylists sort of let you initiate conversation and don't just prattle on about their dog or the economy and whatnot. I had a nice conversation with her, though!
    - Free bang trims between visits! Yes!!

    Points of not-so-awesomeness:
None! The price is a bit steep to go regularly ($50 because she's in the top tier), but for a special occasion it's great, and DEFINITELY worth it. I'm planning on saving up and going back to Jacque!

I have only had 2 hairdressers my entire life that I said "Surprise me.  I don't care what you do as long as I can get it into a pony tail" (desk job, you girls know how that goes...).  ROBERT at this location is one of them.

He is great, can deal with my thick, stick straight hair and when I leave I actually have a good haircut with some body to it.  And the next day when I wash my hair, it still looks like a great haircut!  (not one of those types that only looks good when a professional styles it at the salon, hate those types of haircuts!!).

Robert is the man, and this location is clean, professional and friendly - which is why we all love Aveda spas.

I recently moved from New York to San Diego and I needed to find a new hair stylist. In New York I had been going to the same hair stylist for 8 years (since I have been getting color in my hair). Needless to say I am extremely picky of who does my hair!

When I was looking for a new salon to go to, a friend recommended I try Young Attitudes in La Jolla. I called to make an appointment and a girl, Megan, had an opening so I took it.

I went into the appointment with high nerves, and I can say with confidence I sure was wrong! Right from the start Megan greeted me with a warm smile and made me feel so comfortable. She listened to what I have been getting done, and was understanding of my concerns! After the processing and a wash, the cut was perfect. Walking out of the salon I felt like a million bucks! If you ever need a new stylist who is easy to talk, knows color, and makes your hair look great...Megan's your girl!

The salon is very cute and the location is convenient. Parking is never a problem. I don't use Aveda products, but I did get their hair spray and LOVE IT.

    Highly recommend!!

I can only speak for Whitney, but she was awesome. She gave me a great head massage, followed by an wonderful shampoo, followed by an even more amazing haircut! I had her cut about 8 inches off the length of my hair and she made me feel really comfortable throughout the process.

Another perk: They offer you yummy tea when you walk in.

If you live in the area, it's definitely a good place to try for a moderately priced haircut ($40-50).

I've been here twice for a facial.  Overall good experiences.  Staff is nice and friendly.  Both times they started my facial late, which I feel is unprofessional.
    The facial itself was cleansing.

Pros: the facial is moderately priced ($75).  The esthetician pays close attention and gives great massages when the mask is setting in. Parking is accessible and they usually can give me same day or next day appointments.

Edit:  Lowered one star because this last time I was here, I was swindled out of 15 min. from my facial.  When it's only one hour, and I am paying such high prices, I expect the full hour, not 45 minutes.

Cons:  Started late.  The facial was painful!  It is a salon (so it feels a little off getting a facial here).

I also bought a clay mask from them, which I like.  It costs $19, but it makes my face feel very smooth afterwards.  :)

I originally got my hair cut here by a girl named Jamie who was new to the store. She cut my hair lopsided so I complained and they let me come back in to get it fixed for free. That's how I met Allen.

Allen has been cutting hair for 40+ years and is the only stylist I've ever known to give me consistantly amazing cuts (even with my fine, curly hair). He's extremely knowledgeable and can answer almost any question you have about hair. At $50 he's a steal and I will never go to anyone else!

The staff is really friendly and I had a really nice hair dresser. . .BUT, I am really picky on hair dressers.  I have super straight asian hair which shows any flaws if it has a bad cut.  My layer flip out and look really choppy!

I originally wallked in to buy product and noticed there was a salon in the back. The offered me a 20% off coupon, and I had just moved to the area so I thought "why not" give them a try.

I had an okay cut, but good thing it was just a trim/cut. .

    Service - 5 stars
    Salon - 5 stars
    Hair cut - 3 stars

I would try this place out, but if you have straight unforgiving hair you probably have to shop around a little bit more.

I've been going to the same hairstylist for 6 years but just moved to this area.  I was TERRIFIED to get a bad cut because I have fine, limp hair and getting a good cut that gives me volume is RARE.  I called and they found me an appointment right away with Maggie.  She was friendly, listened to what I wanted and cut my hair PERFECTLY.  Just perfect.  I don't need to do anything to it.  She made sure I was perfectly happy before I left and the only change I asked for was a slant to my bangs.  1 minute later, it was just exactly how I wanted it.  I'd definitely recommend it and go back.

    Additionally:
    Staff = friendly
    Salon = clean
    Location = convenient
    Price = great!
No one tried to sell me products but the products they used were great.
