We tried to go to dinner at Yoshi tonight, but looks like they have filed for bankruptcy and are now closed.

Sad news. I was looking forward to some fresh sushi!

I wrote a review about this before they even had Yelp for Canada so Im just going to copy and paste kakakakaka =_=

"it was just soo good and i think about it all the time that I just have to share it with you guys~

If you are ever in Vancouver please oh please you have to go to Yoshi's. This isnt the place to go to if your looking for a (as nobu says) "jive ass roll."

they specialize in serving traditional japanese cuisine and yes in case you are wondering they is a menu for people who enjoy "jive ass rolls." The staff of Yoshi's hand pick the ingredients for the menu and they have shipments of quality food from japan on tuesdays and thursdays.  Makes me wonder if there is any restaurant in SF that does this..

When i was here i ordered the lobster, which they give you a selection of small medium and large. The lobster was cooked in with vegetables..well more like baked with vegetables and a mayo cream sauce.

Also had the Maguro Goma-ae..which is just tuna marinated in a sesame sauce..

also had the wafu steak, gyu sashi, and these fried mini crabs..ack forgot about this one...o yea also had some nigiri

*drooooool* their toro was soooo good...it was just a special they had that day too with the uni~ omg..thinking about it makes me so hungry..

o yea had some tofu too kakakaka

to top it all off...enjoy with some hot sake...all this on an outdoor patio on the second floor of the restaurant during the sunset is just something you have to experience....o yes and of course you are able to enjoy it with a smoke~

so please remember to go to this restaurant if you plan on going to Vancouver...and please dont go to this place to order a teriyaki bowl...."

Came here after hearing glowing reviews from a foodie friend. The sashimi was good, but not the best I've had.

We sat at the sushi bar... We had sashimi of uni (local), sockeye salmon (local), yellowjack (japan) with skin on (three things that the chef said were the freshest). Uni was really fresh, and was definitely our favorite. Had the monkfish liver appetizer, which had generous amount of the liver, nicely flavored yuzu-soy sauce. The crab salad was just a-okay. Too much soy sauce on the dish makes it hard to taste the crab and caviars. Whole-fried karei was pretty cool. We asked for fresh fish and he said that this presentation of the fish would be good, so I trusted the chef. The whole fish is fried with filet separated from the bones. The bones become crisp from the deep frying and becomes delicious chips; the actual flesh of the fish was very tender, perhaps too tender. But it was delicious.

So is it the best sushi place? No...far from it. But it was a good overall experience. I'd say it's somewhere close to 4 stars but not quite there. But I feel generous as the sushi chef was a joy to talk to and he recommended good izakaya (Kingyo).

I am from the San Francisco area, and we have some mighty fine sushi restaurants that we can brag about.  Yoshi's in Vancouver is right up there with them, and in fact one of the best sushi places I have been to.

My husband and I went there a few years ago, sat at the sushi bar, and were very impressed with the beautiful presentation and high quality of the fish.  They have an extensive menu, with many traditional Japanese items, as well as shabu-shabu.  We mainly ordered the more common sushi and sashimi plates...maguro, hotate, hirame, hamachi...and a few items under the appetizer section.  Everything was over-the-top-melt-in-your-mouth-fresh, incredibly delicious, and reasonably priced for a somewhat  up-scale restaurant.  The location is great, it is adjacent to Stanley Park, and located by the water.  They have a nice outdoor seating area, where you can enjoy the lovely views of the city and harbour.

When we go back to Vancouver, this will definitely be on our list of places to eat!!!  I researched a lot of sushi places on-line before we settled on Yoshi's, and we were not disappointed one bit.  The food and service were both excellent. Highly recommended!

I'm glad to be the second person to give this place a review...welcome to Vancouver, Yelp!!

I was underwhelmed with the place and the experience.  The quality of the food was good, but tasty wise it's just good not excellent as the price would suggest.  3.5 star at best.

I am not eager to go back anytime soon.

As of late my parents have become Sushi fanatics and on their last night in Vancouver we decide to splurge on a great meal.  After much handwringing and research on Yelp we settled on Yoshi (for the sake of full disclosure, our #1 choice was booked for the evening).  I'm more than happy destiny pushed us in that direction as our meal was outstanding, especially for the price.

I ordered ala carte, including a mixture of appetizers, main dishes, nigiri, and rolls- and was shock at how cheap it all come out when drinks were included.

The winners on the night (besides my pocket book) were the beef sashimi and the toro (i know, I know... I should be boycotting it but it tastes so good the moment it hit my lips).

This is the best sushi I've had in my entire life (although I have not been to Japan YET). The sockeye salmon was so good that I cried.  I am not exaggerating.  The tuna is so fresh that it comes out on a bed of crushed ice.   Also, the waitstaff are very professional and helpful.

All other sushi bars will pale in comparison to this one.  Every time I eat sushi I am reminded of how good Yoshi is compared to wherever I am at the time.  Thank you Yoshi, for changing my life.  Mmmmm!

If you're in the mood to appreciate traditional, authentic, sushi prepared by a trained, experienced master, Yoshi is a great choice.

Whenever I go, there is a large ratio of older, well-dressed Japanese diners, and that tells me what's really going on.

I suggest the 'omakase' sushi selection. Koba-san will make a plate of the day's best fish. If you're just into rolls please dine elsewhere; you won't be taking advantage of Chef Koba's real skills.

After much research, my family and I came to this restaurant on many good reviews.  The reviews were right, great selection and very fresh sushi/sashimi!  Although pretty spendy at night, the lunch menu was very reasonable for high quality food.  Including tip for 5 ppl., the check was about $125.  Also, they are only open for lunch from 12-2, then they're closed 'til dinner.

The uni sashimi was spendy at $20  but it was enough for 5 people because it was so rich and very very fresh!  The Kaiseki was very really good and very filling, more than enough for 1 person for lunch.  The Ichimastsu Bento is also a great pick.  The tuna and salmon were silky and tender.  The Hamachi (yellow tail) was so buttery it was awesome!

Next time I'm in Vancouver,  I will definitely go again.

    Things named Yoshi:

That weird dino character in Mario Bros games

That weird tatted character on Miami Ink

That weird sushi joint in Vancouver, highly recommended and even more highly disappointing.

Yoshi's special roll was 8 pieces of blech, which meant we only tried 3.  White tuna nigiri was chewy, in the wrong way.  Other rolls were mediocre for round one, but suffered in the burp department well into the rest of the evening.

I have had great, good, so-so, bad, and inedible sushi - this place wedges itself somewhere between the last two.

Only saving grace - sweet service

Came here awhile back after my Japanese friends kept going on and on about it.

I was in town for the weekend so we had organized dinner with friends here. About 8 of us went, most people had the same feeling - good food, but a little over priced. Fish was fresh, but for some people may not be worth the extra buck or two.

YAY, finally a great sushi restaurant in the West End. I usually go to Ajisai in Kerrisdale (even though I live in the West End) for my sushi cravings, but I think Yoshi *might* just turn out to be the nearby stand-in. Fresh, generous portion, and fantastic service. I had the tuna & salmon don which was great quality but I wished it were a little more seasoned and not just like sashimi with sushi rice on the side. The uni sashimi was ok, but not great. My friends ordered from the lunch combination menu, and it all looked great -- including the sushi combo with spicy tuna cone and dynamite roll. Not cheap, but certainly not expensive considering the quality.

We came here on the reviews from Yelp.
The restaurant was empty.  Usually not a good sign for a sushi spot.

We ordered sushi for the adults and a few grilled items for the kids.
Sushi:  overall fresh, small pieces of fish.  A bit over priced for the taste.
Robata:  fresh ingredient.  Refined but lacks taste.

    Food 3.5 stars
    Service:  5 stars
    Cost:  slightly overpriced

I'm a big sushi fan.  I followed Yelp recommendation and found them to be on point. Sushi was great (A+); Service waspretty good (B+); ambiance/decor (C-) needs some real work and the only thing this place needs to work on. I give it 4 stars because in my world. food trumps decor.
