Anyone who knows me knows I only trust my tresses to Aveda, so this spa was a no-brainer while I was livin' it up in O-town.
When I first started coming to this spa, I opted not to venture into the world of reflexology and massage, instead vying for quality hair indulgences. In the many years of clientship at York, the talented staff took amazing care of me and provided me with beautiful hair makeovers. I rediscovered my natural brown color after years of being a bottle (platinum)blonde, I tried bangs, I went auburn... All kinds of stuff, since I felt like my hair wouldn't get massacred.
Then one magical day I decided I needed a massage for my lumpy, bumpy muscles. Holy Hannah it was heavenly!! My masseur Jesse, was divine, focused almost entirely on the parts that hurt most (trap muscles mostly), and used just enough pressure to knead out the rough stuff without excruciating pain. That was my first of many trips, and ever since I've always been left very satisfied with my massages.
Also if you're in the hunt for great skin/hair products for yourself or as a gift for someone else, you have to hit up this place. They focus on creating natural products that aren't abrasive, and the packaging is Eco-friendly, which is great! If nothing else, try the natural herbal Aveda teas- they really hit the spot and are sooo relaxing! -

I've been coming to this salon for about five years. Although pricey for the average student (no student discounts- sorry!), I needed something on par with my Aveda-Toronto hair dresser.
The salon welcomes you with friendly receptionists, coat check and free beverages. I recommend the Aveda tea.
Hair cuts, including scalp massage, wash and dry run about $70, without tip. However, they do provide free bang trims if you come on a regular basis. I usually see Terry who does a great job of translating what I see in the magazines to my long locks.
One things I would like to mention is although I am lucky to have a great stylist, there are some replacement stylists if your regular is on vacation or sick...and majority of their attitude are not equivalent to the quality of cuts they provide.
All in all, if you have the extra bucks to spend and even more tolerance with stuffy women, this is probably the salon for you. -

I was in ottawa on business and had to kill time until my next appointment. And thought to myself, wouldnt it be nice if I could get in a massage in this time, lo and behold, York Street Spa is right in front of me.
I walked in asked if they took Walk-ins for massage and they did, but didnt have any appointment for another hour. The receptionist who was nice and accomodating, told me the only therapist available was male and asked if that made a difference, it didnt to me and I figured I could get lunch and come back.
The facility is a huge, the massage rooms are minimalistic and perfect. I got a deep tissue massage with Jesse (he was the only available therapist), who was uber nice. He asked me if there was something I like or dont like and troublespots. I told him about a certain area in the neck/shoulder that had been bothering me and also that I like DEEP, deep tissue massage.
The massage itself felt really nice, Jesse dug in deep to the point where it felt this was going to hurt and stopped just before. He was very concerned and wanted me to tell him if I felt pain, but I was good and didnt have to stop him. Jesse found my trouble spot and worked his magic there and I had a feeling that my knots and muscles were going to be all relaxed after that. Half way through the massage it felt like he was rushing to get to all other areas to finish in the hour. So the second half of my massage didnt feel as relaxing as the first half.
They didnt offer me any water after the massage and I had to ask the receptionist for it, that left me a little disappointed. Overall, it was a good exeperience and if I am back in Ottawa and have time to kill, I will definitely visit York Street Spa for a massage with Jesse. -

A pretentious "spa" where I experienced the worst massage of my life.
As a regular spa goer, I decided to bring my wife for a massage after a long week at work. What a mistake! I've told myself not to experiment with new massage therapists since I have a group of therapists I regularly use and am extremely happy with. I should have taken my own advice.
The therapist (Jason) was likely the worst massage therapist I have ever experienced anywhere. While his pressure was acceptable, his technique was bizarre consisting of fast, vibrating movements akin to sitting atop a clothes dryer while in use. During the massage, I asked him to stop these vibrating movements as I found it incredibly annoying and after a few minutes of complying with my instructions, the vibrating returned. I have no idea what he thinks he does but this is NOT massage and while I can certainly enjoy a vigorous massage and app
reciate pressure, this was nothing like that. Having taken massage therapy courses before, I couldn't quite figure out what this massage was. Definitely not Swedish nor Shiatsu nor Deep Tissue. I have my doubts as to the qualification of this therapist.
The spa therapy room was small and dingy -- not one found at any "spa" I've visited in the past.
My wife felt her massage was so-so (definitely better than mine) but that the pressure was too weak.
I was hoping to find a place which we could regularly frequent after a long work week. The hours here are good for that since they close on Fridays at 8PM which would have been a nice routine. Instead, what I found was a place to avoid at all costs. -

As a male, I don't exactly have extensive experience at spa's. However, after visiting the York Street spa with my girlfriend, that may change!
A much-needed massage was not only helpful, but invigorating. The services here are tailored to each individual's needs; they really pamper you here. According to my girlfriend, the quality of the equipment and friendliness of staff was over and beyond most spa's. She also commented on having the best manicure and hair treatment combination she's ever had. I also had the manicure, and left very impressed.
Too boot, the prices were actually reasonable! -

Went for a hair appointment and despite the place seeming pretty empty, the wait was really long. The stylist, Cecilia, was rude and did not do a great job with my hair. It looked the same as I when I went in. Def not worth spending the extra bucks to come to this higher end ottawa salon. Won't be back.
