It's quite embarrassing  to say I work across the street from it and this was my first time here at Taste and LOVED the experience.  I have seen the art piece enough times to realize the pairing worked quite nice, the horse tartar was a delicious surprise and the Chair-y Cola was pretty tasty too, definitely a great culinary experience that if you see the chair, food and cocktail makes complete sense, and for a great cause!

To me it really showed creativity from the chef and he pulled it off, 100% worth it.

I could post a picture of the Pedestool, but you might as well go to Endeavor to see the real thing.

I'm usually the one that says, 'yah, I'll give that a try' when they serve something strange in a restaurant. This time, it was horse tartar. I've had beef tartar - and in Alberta, that can be pretty yummy - so I felt that this meat had a lot to live up to.

My adult self had to convince my 8-year-old self that it wasn't Rainbow Brights unicorn on the plate with delicious delicious buttered crustinis, but in fact a delicacy few get the opportunity to try. Thanks to Taste, those few have become many and they will not be disappointed. The meat is tender and the spices well distributed making this tartar well balanced and complex. Even the pickiest eaters at the table enjoyed it.

Second on the agenda was the Sour Chair-y Cola. The drink was nice but with 'sour' in the name I got less kick than I was ready for. I felt the drink good but a bit mundane, expecting more sour with less chair.

However, Taste did a nice job presenting something unexpected with something most could swallow. Normally, I'd recommend just the filly and say skip the cola but I appreciate the just-a-touch-of-adventure approach when dealing with the masses; so can understand why the drink was safer than the appetizer. And with 20% of the cost going to a good cause, I can definitively drink to that!

Interesting. From horse tartare which was actually pretty good (first time I've ever had tartare of any kind) to the overall vibe in here, I can only describe it as interesting. I was quite surprised that the raw horse was as tasty as it was. Certainly not what I was expecting and pleasantly pleased. Maybe the little crustini I smushed it onto helped.

The specialty drink, Sour Chairy Cola was also interesting but not so that I'd order it again. Perhaps there was too much ale in it for my liking. It tasted as if you mixed some crazy things into a beer. Fruity drinks should not be mixed with beer. That's just not right.

On Tuesdays, Taste has this blind tasting menu that after watching the people I was with enjoy, I decided I was definitely coming back to try that. I watched as the waiter brought out this little cast iron fry pan with a huge cabbage roll in it. I LOVE cabbage rolls. Then they were served some spicy meat Jamaican patties. And finally they had the biggest homemade burgers ever. They looked like large softballs. I have a big mouth but I'm certain even I wouldn't have been able to take a bite and get some of both the bun and meat. All that good food was making me jealous. Yes, there will be a next time for me to try it all although it won't be the same but I'm sure it'll be just as good.

Since I wasn't terribly hungry, I opted for the gnocchi with mushroom and truffle oil. The gnocchi was incredibly tender. Basically melt in your mouth. This was the first time I'd ever had truffle oil and I'm not so sure I'm totally into it. I'd say this dish was ok but I would have preferred a different sauce.

The chef at Taste has created a very unique menu. Some of the items sounded a bit odd and I'm not so sure I'd want to try them (ie. bison bone marrow or crispy pigs ears). He certainly cooks outside the box. Everything here is fresh. Perhaps the horse was running through the field earlier in the day? The quality is tops. So was the service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very attentive. I was a bit surprised at just how small the restaurant is but that lends itself to an intimate atmosphere. Great place for date night. Taste is an intriguing little place most suited to those with an adventurous side.

First of all, my apologies to Tiffany and Sarah Louise - not because I feel guilty but because you are my two favorite Vegans.

I have to openly admit that I am not the adventurous type when it comes to food. My stomach lives vicariously through Anthony Bourdain's: No Reservations, where tactfully I watch him eat various things I could never imagine putting into my own mouth...until today.

When I was 10 years old, living the dream in Switzerland and hungry for something Western I ordered a hamburger at an almost exquisite restaurant. However, to my surprise what had come out was a plate of beef tartare. Admittedly, this single occurrence had scarred me for the majority of my life.

This evening however, I dared to boldly go where Van has never gone before and so I showed up with Wendy to give it a go at Taste, to be adventurous, to see for myself what controversy tastes like and there I watched Wendy take the first bite. Right after that I watched Lisa have her first bite. Soon after Lisa, I watched Carol have her first bite and then it was my turn.

I scooped the Horse Tartare onto the knife and spread it on my piece of baguette as if it was a nostalgic memory of strawberry jam. Although in this case you can see all the different bits of ingredients that went into making this tartare. I took a deep breath, cleared my conscious, thought about nothing but what flavour might come out of eatings this baguette covered in Horse Tartare.

To my surprise - it was simply delicious. My first encounter with Horse Tartare and no one ingredient overwhelmed the other. In fact, I could hardly tell I was eating what I was eating besides the fact that someone told me what it was.

Now onto the Sour Chair-y Cola. I enjoyed the Sour Chair-y Cola but it definitely did not blow me away. I'm not entirely sure what flavour I was expecting to taste but I definitely could taste the rum after each sip. For some reason I was hoping for a bit of a tang to the drink. It was good nonetheless and kudos to the man (forget his name) that put the drink together.

Horse. Mmmm, raw horse. It was my first time trying horse, and I was pretty impressed. It was flavoured well so it didn't taste like you were eating raw meat, and the texture reminded me of some raw fish paste I've had so I wasn't weirded out. For those who can get over the fact that it's raw horse, I definitely recommend trying it. 20% of the sales go towards "I've Been Bullied," so to me, that's justified! Actually, I didn't feel a drop of guilt so it's doubly justified! The Sour Chair-y Cola was pretty good too. It was a concoction of many things, but it still had the essence of cherry cola - nicely done.

Thanks, Taste, for being ballsy and serving HORSE!

(Umm... I still haven't seen the "Pedestool" that is associated with this pairing. Can someone post a picture of it?)
