Definitely the best...at times.
Yellow Cab is the most reliable taxi / cab company in Halifax. Their cars tend to be cleaner and their driver's a lot more normal and a lot friendlier. I have had my share of bad experiences but if I did a side-by-side check between Yellow Cab and the other top company, Casino, I would choose Yellow Cab hands down.
I did call one winter morning during a storm. I asked them if they could come and pick me up even though there is a storm. They said no problem. I then told them I only had debit card and do they take that? They said yes of course. So we finished our conversation and I waited. It was about three in morning so I was dying to get home. After about thirty minutes, I called them back and asked them how much longer it would take. They then told me that they didn't have any taxi's in the area that took Debit Card. I asked them why didn't they tell me that the first time but they didn't give a good answer.
The moral of the story is, make sure you clarify repeatedly with them to ensure they will A. Come and B. Will have what you want. But even with this very bad experience that left me hiking in a snow storm back to my apartment, I would still choose them over the other companies. So that's saying something.
I have been to many countries where some taxi companies try to rip people off. I can reassure anyone who lives out of town that this won't happen in Halifax. Everything is regulated and the only way one could be scammed is if the driver took you the long way around. But I have never experienced that with Yellow Cab. And neither has any of my friends.
Generally Yellow Cab is great. You should definitely give them a call if you need a lift. I have had some strange experiences with them but no more than any other company. -

I write this with the caveat that I've never really experienced great service with any cab company in the city. In fact, it often seems like they're doing you a favour by driving you, rather than providing a service that I pay for. In fact, I often avoid taking cabs because the frustration is rarely worth $10. I'd rather take the bus.
Now, having said that, here's why I'm giving this cab company one star (possibly my first one star ever): I phoned for a cab at 9:17 a.m. so that I could get somewhere for 9:30. In a perfect world, and considering it only takes about 10-15 minutes to drive most place on the peninsula, I should have only been no more than ten minutes late for the event I was headed to. After waiting 20 minutes, I phoned the company to ask about the cab and was told cab 148 was on it's way. I actually saw cab 148 drive past my house about 10 minutes later. It never came back for me. Forty minutes after the original call, I phoned back again and was told that the cab arrived but no one came out of the house. My guess? The driver didn't find my house so he blamed me. I had them send another cab, which was there 10 minutes later. I was a full forty minutes late for my event.
While the dispatcher did apologize on my second call, I think it's ridiculous that anyone should have to wait 50 minutes to get a taxi. If they're running behind, just tell me when I first call so I can either choose to wait or make alternate plans. But when Metro Transit becomes the speedier option, y'all are doing it wrong.
And this isn't the first time I've waited longer than I should for a taxi without being given any warning that it'll take awhile or any apology for taking so long to get to me.
Having said this, I've never had any problem with individual drivers once I am in the cab. That much I can say and maybe when the rage subsides, I'll bump this up to a two star review based on that. -

So here's another one-star review for Yellow.
Granted, it was pissing rain last night, and a Saturday.
But when I called back 15 minutes after ordering a cab, and discovered it hadn't even been dispatched, the dispatcher got pretty shirty with my when I was annoyed.
Then 40 minutes later, I was in a Casino taxi that appeared not ten minutes after I called for it.
So Yellow's number is easy to remember, but I am going to put time into relearning Casino as my number one.Listed in: Rocktober!

We took a yellow cab from Spring Garden back home to Fairwiew. It was honestly my best cabbing experience in Halifax so far. Our driver got us home was faster than any other cab I've taken from down town, but he did so safely. He just took all the right routes instead of the long way around. And as a plus, he didn't insist on holding awkward conversations for the duration of out trip, my biggest pet peeve about cabs.
Thank you for a nice ride home! -

I'll try not to make this review about how much Casino Taxi rocks socks. And while I typically call Casino, a recent trip to the grocery store with no cell phone required an automatic dial-in to Yellow Cab. (SuperStore has a taxi phone in its entrance.)
The difference between service was like night and day-- you wouldn't think there'd be such a difference between driving services. The first thing I noticed was that the cab driver did not come outside to assist my sister and I put our bags in the trunk. This is an every-time occurrence with Casino, as drivers maintain some cheeky welcome.
After such delightful services from Casino, this drive did not compare. Im not one to chat up the drivers, but when my sister made a friendly hello, the cab driver said absolutely nothing to respond. In fact, he ignored any hint of communication exchange until we reached our destination... and it was just a bit odd.
Taxi-cabs are not the first place I look to for top notch customer service, and as long as they get me from Point A to Point be in the most efficient duration of time and cash, its all good. But when it comes to nitpicking and going for the classy cab experience, Yellow Cab was a miss and Casino became reassured. -

Yellow Cab have a real problem answering their phones and being straight with you.
Like Josh, I experienced the "Sure, we take debit" routine. I'm not as forgiving as he is though. When I wait 40 minutes for a cab I'm told is coming and then it does not come, you're probably not going to get my business again. It's seems to me that being honest and saying they can't accommodate debit payments is probably a smarter move than saying they'll pick me up and then flaking out, but hey, what do I know?
On desperate occasions after this I have tried calling Yellow Cab and I find their phone line is either always busy or they just do not answer the phone. Perhaps they have my number flagged after I politely told them how I felt about their decision to lie to me. Regardless, this is incredibly annoying.
Poor customer service mixed with outright lying to me means I will never recommend Yellow Cab to anybody. Go with Casino, they're the better cab company.
