Food seems to be getting better but the price is sure getting higher. I guess it goes hand in hand.  The steamed dumplings has a great variety and is tasty.  The chicken congee is very good but a bit pricy.  Overall I enjoy the restaurant and would return.

I usually go to Yan's for dim sum with my friends, it seems like the only dim sum place in the North Burnaby area. I believe this was the same restaurant that used to be on St. John's street in Port Moody. They recently renovated the restaurant and now has a space where they can accommodate big parties and weddings.

They offer a good selection of dim sum and have servers who push out dim sum carts around the restaurant so you can see what you are ordering. I would definitely recommend getting their XO sauce radish cake which is very flavorful and delicious. One thing I did not like was their mini soup pork buns. I bit into mine, expecting soup to spill out... and disappointingly, nothing came out.

The service here is typical for a Chinese Restaurant, so not that great. If you come here on Sunday during lunch time, expect a long line up.

Yan's kitchen is close to where I live, so I frequent this place regularly. I like how they still serve their tasty little dumplings on carts. The food itself is not bad, and the dishes aren't too expensive. The only complaint i have is hat the service is lacking. Although, there is one very cheerful and enthusiastic lady who works there, and she makes the experience better. She has glasses and a loud voice; she's a sweetheart.

Wok am I doing here?  Isn't this place the one that Stephen Yan used to run years ago from the Wok with Yan series?  Yes it was :) (big smile on my face, pause for momentary dreamscape.....and sigh....)  Now where were we?

So, before we can Wok, we must Yan!  At Yan's Garden that is!!
What a delight!   The noisy chatter of Cantonese and broken English  and clickity hustle and bustle of  food carts passing us by....  Temping us with the smells of delish wee morsels like, Har Gow (steamed prawn pockets), Siu Mai (Steamed Pork dumplings) and Lo Bak Go (White Raddish cakes),,,OH!... and my buddies favourite; the Har Wun Tun (Shrimp Wuntun dumpling soup) .
YES!  THIS IS!!!......... "old school Dim Sum."

For those looking for sum din good to eat, it's here. (I'm so sorry for writing all these bad puns like this, but I'm on an egg roll here folks.).
Wok? You got a problem with that? (joke).

The coup de grace here as the steamed sponge cake.  If you haven't had it before, try it this time when you come here to dine.

There was so much to write about, but you might have to experience this yourself.  With so many places changing to the new (pre-order) Dim Sum format.  It's a nice throwback to experience cart service.  (Remember, you eat with your eye's first and seeing is believing.)  They tempt you with the visual's, then the smells, then the recommendations for everything that comes your way (of course they say it's all good).

Better to come early, don't come late.  When it starts to wind down, the food can tend to be a bit on the cold side (hence the 4 star rating instead of 5), so come when it's fresh and hot and the noise level is over 100db.  The noisier the better, the fresher the food!

Wok the heck!   Have some chickens feet and savour the history (mmmm not the chickens foot history, but. ummmm the history of Yan's Garden, never mind the chicken foot stuff. really, it's good)

Forgive my chattiness here.  I'm just excited I got to eat here and experience and share this with good friends.  That's all.

A nice large dim sum style restaurant, which leads me to think I should check out their dim sim.

The place is bright and clean and the service was pretty good.

The food off the dinner menu was blah to above average. The General Tao Chicken was average, the Beef Satay and Fried Noodles (while not very satayish at all) was pretty good. The Fried Squid with Peppery Salt was a complete disappointment, soggy and absolutely no peppery salt that I could taste. (Tsim Chai still makes the best salt and pepper squid in the lower mainland.)

I went to Yan's Garden with my family again. We had sweet and sour pork, soup of the day, seafood/mushroom stirfry, and chilli chicken. Soup of the day was pork and vegetables and it was actually very good and for a medium sized pot for 3 dollars was very good value. Sweet and sour pork was good, nice and crunchy and the portions was quite large.  Seafood/mushroom stirfry was okay, there was a lot of squid and not enough scallops and shrimp, however it did come with a lot of pumpkin which is a plus. The mushrooms used wasn't as high quality as the first time I ordered the dish. Chilli chicken was a disappoint as it wasn't spicy at all, and there was way too much chilli sauce.

Each dinner comes with a free desert.  Desert of the day was either mango pudding or sweet snow fungus soup.  Mango pudding was insanely small, but good. It was the smallest portion I've ever encountered, as I remember I was served a much larger portion the first and second time at this restaurant.  I didn't complain as it was a free bonus dessert.

All in all, this restaurant is good value. The food wasn't as nice as my first and second time visiting this restaurant.  I wish the quality was more consistant for all the dishes. Service wasn't as nice as my first two visits to Yan's Garden. Plates were never changed and the waiter/waitress never asked if we liked our food. So, I have to drop the status as "better than most Chinese restaurants in Vancouver and Richmond". It's definately the best Chinese restaurant in Burnaby and that's about it.

Yan's Garden really has to stay true to its roots as a Chinese restaurant competing against some of the best Chinese restaurants in Vancouver and Richmond restaurants.

I'm starting to prefer Western Lake Chinese restaurant in Vancouver over Yan's Garden now. Western Lake Chinese restaurant offers dishes cooked to perfection each and every time with similar prices as Yan's.  FYI: I've been to Western Lake over 15 times for dinner.

In short, THERE ARE NO VERY GOOD CHINESE RESTAURANTS IN BURNABY!!!

I went here shortly after it opened and I was somewhat disappointed, somewhat by the food but mostly the service.  They were very disorganized.  But I've heard good things and maybe the disorganization was because it was new.  I might have been disappointed by the food because I was hoping it would be like the previous restaurant in that spot, Mei Shang.

When we arrived at the restaurant, we inquired if the restaurant was Stephen Yan's as we also were aware that is where his restaurant used to be.  They said NO!

Also on their web page, they list owner and dimsum chef as Dan Cheuk and executive chef as Gordon Chen.

I will have to go back and try again.

This was my first time here at Yan's Garden for dinner. I had the following:

    - Shredded Chicken Cold Cut Pieces with Jellyfish
    - Deep fried shrimps with onions
    - Snow peas and snap peas - snow peas were a little too oily
    - Deep Fried Crispy Skin Chicken (Feng Sha Chicken) - pretty good as the meat wasn't too dry.
    - Crab with Black Bean Sauce
    - Crab Meat with Fish Maw Soup - my favorite! Although they put a lot of sesame oil in it, this was different from the ones I eat at other restaurants. They put shrimps and bits of scallops in it which was quite delicious.
    - Porkchops with Honey Walnut in Dressing - it was good because the porkchops weren't fatty. The dressing was evenly mixed with the porkchops.
    - Tilapia Fish - I love my omega 3's! :)
    - Yang Chow Fried Rice
    - Chinese Baked Tapioca Pudding - this was very delicious especially when it comes out freshly from the oven. It wasn't too sweet which made it superb. I've had this at other restaurants where I felt like I was eating a bagful of sugar. Thinking about it is making me salivate. This topped the meal! Handsdown delicious.

We took the advice of Conde Nast and the Vancouver Sun went Yan's Garden Restaurant for  Chinese New Year's dinner. We order 10 courses from the fixed for $200. The Dishes are large and taste better than average but lacks the sophistication of many Chinese Restaurants in Richmond. Decor is very standard and clean as far large Chinese resturants go.
A little disappointed in Conde Nast's write up on Yan Garden's signature dessert  dish "two pumpkin with honeyed walnut"

Conde Nast over rated Yan's Garden. I have had much better Chinese Food all around Metro Vancouver.

Note: large portions, good service, English Freindly, good web site.

Meh, indeed. Seriously, this place really is over rated. If I could give it only 2 1/2 stars, I would.

Nice place, and the service was no problem, but the food that we ordered was only barely passable, although everything was certainly fresh enough; the veggies were nice and crisp, and not steamed into oblivion like some kitchens tend to do.

The one bright light for me was the beef tender loin, which was actually very enjoyable, if a bit on the bland side. We also ordered curry chicken on rice (my wife's 'must have' dish) and a Buddha's feast. The curry chicken was alright for what it was, and my wife enjoyed it. The BF on the other hand consisted of mostly different varieties of mushrooms, with maybe 20% other non-fungal bits and pieces; all of which was smothered in an overly thick, sticky 'sauce' of starch and water. The starch was just plain gross, and the consistency reminded me of cow's drool, at least how it looks. Every time I picked up a mushroom or veggie bit, there'd be a sticky runner of starch snot hanging from it. Maybe this works for some folks, but for me it's a big time appetite killer. Most places mix in enough starch to thicken things just a touch, and that's all right. But the way Yan's does it is just over the top, and it really ruined the meal for me.

I was also sorry to find that they only do curry beef brisket with the thick curry sauce on top (like Mui Garden), rather than with the savory broth style (like at Hon's), which I classify as 'to die for'; the flavorful broth just makes the curry flavor go right into the meat and is great with the rice too. I just wish that places like Yan's and Mui Garden would try preparing it that way.

I may go back another time just to see if ordering a different dish will find me having a better experience; but for now, Yans is a two and a half to a low three.

At least we didn't have to put up with the kitchen staff smoking in the back room after closing times as happens with so many restaurants.

It seems like a decent place overall, but it's probably not for me. Next time I'll try to be early enough to make it to Lucky Gate, which was where I would have gone, had they been open a bit later. Oh well - better luck next time!

    Bland food.
    Large portions.
    Fair prices.
    Too much snotty starch!
