Went here for the first time today with my boyfriend and his family. I had fun! The service was not exactly speedy, but everything we ate was delicious!

The atmosphere is decent and the place smells really good. My mouth started watering as soon as I stepped in there. Which was unfortunate, because we had a long long wait for a table. (We came at 6:00 pm, and had a group of five. There were some tables open but I guess they didn't want to push two together.) The lighting was pretty much your standard romantic evening mood lighting. Dim lights, candles on the tables, etc. I was pretty indifferent towards it, as it wasn't really that unique, but hey, it works.

Our group ordered a whole bunch of stuff, the majority of which was split between all of us. The weird thing was nothing really came out at the same time. Some of us had to wait a long time for what we ordered, and the sides of rice came out last (when we were pretty much done everything else) which was kind of weird. I ordered sashimi and would have liked to eat my rice with it! For the most part it didn't matter though, because we were splitting most of it, and everything was served at the right temperature.

Okay, so the food. I'm not a calamari fan in general but theirs was good (not too rubbery.) The dipping sauce for the calamari was some kind of spicy mayo sauce and man it was good. I tried the BC roll and I liked the contrast between the chewiness of the seaweed and rice and the crunchiness of the salmon skin. We ordered some vegetable tempura but I only got to snag one piece before the rest was eaten. It was good, but I don't think that it was any better than other tempura I've had. The sashimi was my favorite part of the meal. A good selection of fish and the sauce they put on it was mighty tasty!! For dessert I had black sesame ice cream and it was one of the more unique ice creams I've ever had. It almost tasted like coffee in a way.

Overall, the experience I had was a good one. As long as you're not in a hurry, I'd recommend it!

I really wanted to love this place. I love sushi and this is the only place in town to get it.
The rolls were ok. The rice was soggy and didn't hold together well. The vegetables in the rice bowl were very soggy and fell apart. No chewing required. It was almost as if they were frozen and then microwaved...even though their website says "Nothing is microwaved"...Hmmmmm
The service was poor and the meal was poor.
I also called 6 months later to
Order take out.  They told me that they do provide takeout service but only when they have nothing else to do and the restuant is slow..WTF?  Do you want my business or not..I guess not
Guess I have to learn how to make my own in fernie.
Yamagoya is overpriced for the low quality of food and service

This was a great place for sushi.  Anyway, the menu had a bunch of "local" flavor types of sushi. I really enjoyed the Kryptonite roll, but everything was good. The service was friendly and we ate every piece on the plate.
Now, the down side. The place only opens at 5:00 pm and you have to be early or you will be waiting for a table. The waiting area is by the bar and you can have drinks but no appetizers. Seems a little odd but If you want sushi in Fernie, you wait. I really hate a restaurant that is dark and this one was almost black. seems the manager has a bit of a likeness for the dim lit scene. Our waitress turned our light up slightly and minutes later, the manager turned it down. Not sure why, the food was set very nice and looked fabulous. I guess presentation was only important to the chefs. They had an interesting selection of beer including a few local brews, one of which my buddy enjoyed.
All in all it was great sushi and I guess you can not complain about a restaurant being too busy. We will go back.
